I have just come back from a 5 night stay at La Reine des Alpes with my boyfriend and his brother. The hotel's current owners have only been there for 7 months and although no previous experience of hotel ownership they were absolutely wonderful. Yvonne made a real effort to make us feel as welcome as possible. On the first night our room was slightly chilly and by the time we returned from dinner this had been rectified.
The town itself is relatively quiet - only one other hotel, a few restaurants, several ski shops and some bars. If you're looking for a nightlife this is probably not the best resort to stay in, however with all shops and amenities in close proximity it is very convenient.
The hotel is literally opposite the chairlift to take you towards Champoussin and other ski areas within Portes du Soleil, which is a bonus as it means you do not have to lug skis a long distance. There is free parking available so we decided to hire a car to drive from Geneva which worked out much cheaper than a taxi for the three of us.
We had one of the suites which was beautifully furnished and spacious, with a modern bathroom (with shower over bath and decent hairdryer), a dressing room, lounge area, and main bedroom with an extremely comfortable bed. For £150 each extra than a standard room for the 5 days it was definitely worth it. Standard rooms had a much smaller bathroom with a shower; the bedroom itself was the same size as our bedroom in the suite. Most BBC and ITV channels were available. Had a great night's sleep every night with no noise from outside.
The breakfast buffet had everything you would expect - yoghurt, cereal, fruit, bread, croissants, ham and cheese, in addition to tea and coffee. The restaurant has a lunch and dinner menu - could perhaps have slightly more available, but the food we had was lovely and very reasonably priced.
If I were to ski Portes du Soleil again I would perhaps try a Swiss resort slightly closer to the border, nevertheless we had a wonderful stay and in terms of location and comfort we could not have asked for any more.
