“Fabulous staff, excellent food & great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2013

I have just come back from a 5 night stay at La Reine des Alpes with my boyfriend and his brother. The hotel's current owners have only been there for 7 months and although no previous experience of hotel ownership they were absolutely wonderful. Yvonne made a real effort to make us feel as welcome as possible. On the first night our room was slightly chilly and by the time we returned from dinner this had been rectified.

The town itself is relatively quiet - only one other hotel, a few restaurants, several ski shops and some bars. If you're looking for a nightlife this is probably not the best resort to stay in, however with all shops and amenities in close proximity it is very convenient.

The hotel is literally opposite the chairlift to take you towards Champoussin and other ski areas within Portes du Soleil, which is a bonus as it means you do not have to lug skis a long distance. There is free parking available so we decided to hire a car to drive from Geneva which worked out much cheaper than a taxi for the three of us.

We had one of the suites which was beautifully furnished and spacious, with a modern bathroom (with shower over bath and decent hairdryer), a dressing room, lounge area, and main bedroom with an extremely comfortable bed. For £150 each extra than a standard room for the 5 days it was definitely worth it. Standard rooms had a much smaller bathroom with a shower; the bedroom itself was the same size as our bedroom in the suite. Most BBC and ITV channels were available. Had a great night's sleep every night with no noise from outside.

The breakfast buffet had everything you would expect - yoghurt, cereal, fruit, bread, croissants, ham and cheese, in addition to tea and coffee. The restaurant has a lunch and dinner menu - could perhaps have slightly more available, but the food we had was lovely and very reasonably priced.

If I were to ski Portes du Soleil again I would perhaps try a Swiss resort slightly closer to the border, nevertheless we had a wonderful stay and in terms of location and comfort we could not have asked for any more.

Room Tip: If you do not mind spending a little extra, go for a suite as they are a lot more spacious with a bi...

We spent three nights at the hotel for a ski break. The room was clean tidy and had everything you would require. Breakfast was great with the usual cereals, bread, croissants, fruit, meat and ham offered in Switzerland, buffet style so you could fill up for a day on the slopes. The staff were extremely welcoming and warm. We ate in for dinner on a couple of the nights, the menu is not extensive but adequate and is the only reason I'm scoring a very good rather than an excellent. The hotel owners have only recently taken over and maybe over time the menu will increase. Great access to the slopes it was only 50 metres walk to the chair lift and an easy run home in the evening. Great place, great fun and have booked for the summer already to walk in the mountains.

Room Tip: We stayed in the suite and it was enormous with everything you could possibly want.

My husband & I together with his parents drove to Switzerland from England so we were looking foward to the hotel after the travelling. The hotel it'self is well located with great views and the rooms were spacious and well equipped. This is why our initial welcoming to the hotel and later experiences were such a shame. The man that greeted us sitting at the bar really couldn't be bothered to check us in for the next 3 nights. It seemed like a chore to him. He then went onto to say - the hotel is closing for the season after we leave and therefore there will be no meals served in the hotel for the next 3 nights. This is one of the main reasons we booked this hotel - to be able to get food in the hotel where you are staying! Finally the breakfast on day 3 was atrocious as they just gave us what was left (which wasn't enough) - they didn't buy extra to cater for our breakfast, they just used what they had left over. Very poor! So to summarise:-
1) Don't book hotels right at the end of the season - the staff can't be bothered and can't wait to close up.
2) Always check that they will be serving food as promised.

Room Tip: Balcony Room at the front was large and with great views. Shame that other bad experiences of our s...

We chose this hotel after reading all the positive reviews on trip adviser and we were pleased with our choice. We had a twin room with an extra bed put in to make a triple. Even with the extra bed there was plenty of room and plenty storge space. The room was very clean and we had a balcony.
All the staff were really friendly & helpful and the food in the restaurant was good. There is a half board option but you don't have to choose this so just selected from the menu as we went along.
The hotel is situated in the centre of Morgins and there is a chairlift just opposite (across the square). However, both runs down were red so as a resort Morgins is probably not that suitable for first time skiers although we did see people coming back down in the chairlift as there are some blue runs just at the top of the chairlift.
I would use this hotel again and recommend it to others.
