“Hotel or night club ?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2007

We spent 2 nights at Albergo Airone. The hotel is located over the village of Zafferana Etnea on the road to the Etna, so it is a perfect basis to visit the vulcano, especially if you want to be there early in the morning which is the best time, because the clouds come generally few by few during the day.
It is a 3 stars hotel and it has the comfort that can be expected in that case : spacious and pretty decorated rooms, good beds, modern bathrooms ; it is very clean. The swimming pool is great and the hotel includes a free health center with spa, sauna, UV, etc..(we didn't use it).
There is a restaurant, but we didn't try it either, we prefered to take meals in the village at restaurants with terrasses, to profit of the italian streets atmosphere.
A perfect place then ? no, because there are dark points too : the quality or the service is rather unequal, depending on the members of the staff, some are just enough kind, let's say they just do what they are payed for, the smile not included.
Some are more pleasant. They don't all speak english.
Now comes THE big problem : we still wonder if we were in a hotel or in a night club .We were awaken in the middle of the 2 nights we spent there, by groups of people speaking, laughing, screaming, slamming doors, etc .. and it didn't last only 2 minutes, impossible to sleep ; so we finally called the reception to ask for silence ;that behaviour didn't really seem to shock them, must be usual probably ; the mess finally stopped but not quickly. Because of their intervention or by itself, we don't know.
Last thing ,, the last morning, we wanted to relax a last time at the swimming pool. Suddenly, the pool and the sunbeds were invaded by about 40 children! we like children, but still .. not the best for a relaxed time! We suppose that the hotel has accords with the school in the village.
In conclusion, if you want a comfortable hotel, close to the Etna and and you handle noise, it can be a good choice; if you want to rest quietly, avoid!

I read the previous reviews of the Hotel Airone at Zafferana Etnea, near Catania, Sicily and didn't know what to expect. One review was glowing and the other did not like it at all. As I had chosen it for my honeymoon, I didn't want it to be a disaster.
In the end, I would say that the Hotel Airone is average, with some good elements and some bad.
Bay far the best thing about the hotel is the view, which on a clear day is absolutely stunning (make sure you get a room on the seaward side, preferably on the second floor). You can see all the way to mainland Italy and Taormina, and at night it is just as magical overlooking the local town. It is also very handy for Mount Etna, which is a short drive away (you can smell the steam and fumes from the hotel!).
The rooms are fairly good and large, but we had a problem that the air conditioning didn't work. We just had a fan moving the warm air around, and even that was after I had to ask reception to turn it on. The breakfasts were not very good, the coffee tasted burnt, the eggs had gone off and there were flies landing on the uncovered food (I tried covering it with napkins but the waiter kept removing them!).
A wedding was held in the hotel on the Saturday night and they let off fireworks right outside our room at 12.45am!
The swimming pool is very good indeed and there are other facilites like a gym, which we didin't get time to use.
The staff seemed a little 'cold' and there was quite a strange atmosphere in the hotel, certainly not exactly warm and welcoming. This was possibly because it was mostly empty when we stayed.
The hotel is high up on the hillside overlooking Zafferana Etnea. If you are reasonably fit it is about a 20 minute walk into the town at night (worth it) and a steep 30 minute walk back.
Basically, I think the hotel Airone was average and OK as a base for touring the east of Sicily. However, don't expect much luxury or personal attention.

This hotel was recommended by a guide book, and also by an enthusiastic trip advisor member. The location is good if you want to hike on the Etna (yet it is still a 20 km drive to reach La Sapienza, at Etna’s foothill). The view is also very nice (on the seaside, because the rooms looking towards the Etna are above a road).
But the hotel is more like a tour hotel, not really charming. One of its drawbacks is the soundproofing of the doors: you hear everything that happens on the corridors and that may be noisy as it is difficult to close rooms’ doors silently.
We paid 120 euros for one night in a double room. A bit overpriced, especially since we stayed there in the first weeks of April when it was too cold for the swimming pool.

We found this Hotel when we happened to drive through Zafferana Etnea and stop at the tourist bureau. I dont think they get too many tourists, as a local who was also visiting this Info bureau offered to drive us to our car, and then drive to the hotel to show us how to get there. We were touched by their generosity!

This Hotel is up the Hill form Zafferana Etna, and a little too far to walk into town, but perfect if you have a car. The hotel looks very swish, and they have certainly made an effort to make it like a very good 3 star hotel. Our room was enormous, we were upgraded for free into a suite with a huge balcony. The view was amazing, as it is on the foothills of Etna and you can see the sea in the distance.

There is a gym and a lovely swimming pool with an incredible view.

I highly recommend this hotel, and it was so nice to stay away from the main tourist trap.
