“Tapas to die for!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2014

Having visited Altea on lots of occasions before we fancied trying something a bit different for our boxing day dinner. We found Xef Pitata online and decided that we'd give it a try due to the rave reviews it had received; we weren't disappointed.
The restaurant is funky and cool but not at all intimidating. The art work and decoration is fairly off beat and quirky: picture paintings of cartoon pirate cats in hats and odd little mermaids, the ceiling adorned with fairy lights and red bistro style candles on the tables and you're there. We sat upstairs which was much cosier and with comfortable seating. There were five of us and we had plenty of space around the table.
We ordered the tasting menu for tapas which at first seemed a little pricey. However when they started to arrive we saw why. I've never eaten such tasty and luxurious tapas before. We're quite a greedy guts family and to begin with we were a little disappointed by the portion sizes. But it was definitely a case of our eyes being bigger than our bellies! Although we ordered one extra dish to supplement the tasting menu we were more than full by the end of it. The wine was on the pricey side but it was delicious so as it was Boxing Day we didn't mind splashing out. But overall at the end when the bill came we were pleasantly surprised. It came to about €120 for five of us. Whilst this is much more expensive than what we'd usually pay for tapas, it was well worth it as the food was more like a Michelin star standard than your average Spanish bar. To top it all off the waiters were as tasty as the food and we couldn't fault the attentive service they gave.
Overall this is a must visit if you want to eat tapas with a modern twist in a quintessentially Spanish location.

“Worst dinner tables ever, worst service, and discriminates Spanish”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2013

My Spanish friend (i am Dutch), made the reservation. We got the worst place in the restaurant (they have two bad places, i don't want even to call that it is a table). When we asked for another table, a normal one where you have a normal dinner-table and -seats, they said that we had to say with the resevation that we want a 'normal' table (!!!).
You only see toerists in the restaurant, it seems that they don't want to have Spanish (local) people. They had more tables free at that moment, but the manager refused to give us. They were absolutly not friendly, we leaved and never come back again.

(food/value set to Average, because we don't had dinner, i saw the menu and the prices are average, for less money you can have dinner much better)

“Size does not matter!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2013

The locals may not be the biggest in town, but the food certainly is grand!
The quality and tastes are excellent, the bar is great, the staff really does its best for you. We had (more than one) fantastic meals and Nights at Xef Pirata. Easily my favourite place in Altea centre!

“Best Tapas in Altea”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2013

The Tapas served here are as good as any we have ever found in Spain and would appeal to those looking to experience real Tapas and not the usual tourist variety! The prices are very low compared to elsewhere so overall this place is really worth a detour.
