Having visited Altea on lots of occasions before we fancied trying something a bit different for our boxing day dinner. We found Xef Pitata online and decided that we'd give it a try due to the rave reviews it had received; we weren't disappointed.
The restaurant is funky and cool but not at all intimidating. The art work and decoration is fairly off beat and quirky: picture paintings of cartoon pirate cats in hats and odd little mermaids, the ceiling adorned with fairy lights and red bistro style candles on the tables and you're there. We sat upstairs which was much cosier and with comfortable seating. There were five of us and we had plenty of space around the table.
We ordered the tasting menu for tapas which at first seemed a little pricey. However when they started to arrive we saw why. I've never eaten such tasty and luxurious tapas before. We're quite a greedy guts family and to begin with we were a little disappointed by the portion sizes. But it was definitely a case of our eyes being bigger than our bellies! Although we ordered one extra dish to supplement the tasting menu we were more than full by the end of it. The wine was on the pricey side but it was delicious so as it was Boxing Day we didn't mind splashing out. But overall at the end when the bill came we were pleasantly surprised. It came to about €120 for five of us. Whilst this is much more expensive than what we'd usually pay for tapas, it was well worth it as the food was more like a Michelin star standard than your average Spanish bar. To top it all off the waiters were as tasty as the food and we couldn't fault the attentive service they gave.
Overall this is a must visit if you want to eat tapas with a modern twist in a quintessentially Spanish location.
