“Cheap & Cheerfull Stay At The Nicon Apartments”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2011

Myself and my partner stayed at the Nicon with friends (another couple) for the 1st week of September 2011. We booked a two bedroom apartment while our friends had booked a studio.
On arrival we were first shown to a studio and when my partner went tell the owner, Spiros, that we'd booked an apartment he told us he wouldn't be able to move us until the following day. As compensation he asked if we could have free air-con for the night which Spiros eventualy agreed to after much haggling! He seemed pretty grumpy with us, like the mix-up was our fault. Anyway we were moved first thing the following morning so it was no issue.

The rooms at the Nicon are a little dated and basic but are spotlessly clean, spacious and have everything you need. The super efficient cleaning ladies came every day, but the towels were only changed once in the whole week and the bedsheets were not changed at all so were becoming quite grubby by the end of a hot week. The aircon on a two bed apartment is 10euro's per night and we found it absolutely necessary. Our friends however had a semi-basement studio with a lovely little terrace which stayed much cooler than our upper-floor room so they managed without it.

The pool area is gorgeously clean and welcoming with plenty of comfy loungers. The bar is reasonably priced and the bar-food is great value for money as well as tasty and fresh. All the staff who worked on the bar were brilliant, really friendly and very knowledgable about the area.

The Nicon apartments are about a half hours gentle stroll into the centre of Kos town with its lovely harbour and all its bars, shops and resteraunts. However for eating out you will not get a better meal than the resteraunts just along the sea-front from the apartments. If you walk left out of the car-park from the Nicon - down to the sea-front then take a right there are five or six resteraunts along this stretch. All of these are fantasticically romantic and excellent value, especially if you order the house wine in a caraffe - but I'd patricularly reccommend the steak in Arhontiko and the barbaque sea bream in Blue Ocean. Just don't forget your insect repellant or you may end up with a bite or two!!

All in all we had a fantastic holiday and would reccommend the Nicon for a freindly, relaxing, cheap & cheerfull break. Its basic and clean just don't go expecting 5star luxury.

At last we have found our perfect holiday. For the last two years we have paid through the nose for expensive all inclusive holidays. We have enjoyed them but there has always been something lacking. Now we know what it is- the personal touch. The Nicon is a family run business and it is this personal touch that we think made all the difference. On arrival we found our one bedroom apartment to be very clean and a good size for the three of us. I had pre-ordered the air conditioning by emailing the hotel. It was August so I decided that I would pay the 8 euros per night and this proved to be well worth it as the weather was very hot. The kitchen is well equipped with crockery, glasses, cutlery and basic cooking equipment but the most we ever did was make coffee, toast, cereal and other small snacks. One tip I would give would be to take a small bottle of washing up liquid as this is not provided and it seems a waste to pay 90 cents for a large bottle in the super market when you are going to throw most of it away. The pool area is very clean and there are plenty of sunbeds. We got to the pool by 11 am most days and would manage to find two. If you were later than this then there are also chairs so there is always somewhere to sit. We were not early risers and got to know the cleaning ladies very well, they would check if we were ready for them to clean and if not they would go back later on - they were very polite and friendly and I believe that they are also relatives of the owners. The pool bar is run in the daytime by Costas (son of the owner) and George. In the night it is run by Nikos (son of the owner) and his finace Toni. These four were very friendly but never intrusive. We enjoyed chatting to them and so got to know them well but if you did'nt want to chat then they did'nt intrude and I'm sure some people might not have got so involved as we did but that is the type of people we are. We joined in the Greek night which was well worth the money for the food alone but the dancing was great too. We sang on the Karaoke and chatted to everyone. The beauty is that everyone is British. I don't mind going to mixed nationality hotels at all but there is something great about being able to chat to everyone and we did have a great laugh. It was so friendly at the Nicon.
Kos town is a 30 minute walk, 1.30 euros on the bus or 7 euros in a taxi. We did a mixture of all of these and found the town very accessable. The hotel itself is in Psalidi which has a few restaurants and supermarkets but is really a much smaller resort.
I have noted the comments made about Spiros in other reviews and we did not have any negative issues with him at all. However he does come across as a control freak - he even showed the gardener how to cut the grass!! In his defense I would say that he has run this business for 17 years and is so fussy about the grounds and the pool that they are absolutely immaculate. The pool was the cleanest pool that I have ever seen, he tended to it every night. The grounds are constantly being pruned and mowed, swept etc. He stays in the reception area and deals with the booking of air conditioning, safe and tv remote etc. Apart from that we had nothing to do with him. His two sons speak perfect english and are fantastic ambassadors for the hotel. They will give advice about where to visit and how to get there. They cook lovely food in the pool bar and mix great cocktails and make brilliant ice cream milk shakes too - my son became addicted to them!! The prices at the pool bar are not a rip off either - 2.50 euros per pint of lager, 3 euros for a cocktail. A pizza is around 4euros and a cheeseburger and chips around 5 euros. All fresh ingredients and made right in front of you. We went on a boat trip around the three islands close to Kos - we booked this ourselves rather than through Thomson and it was a fraction of the price. Thomson charges 49 euros per adult and 25 euros per child, we went on this trip for 52 euros in total for two adults and one child. What a difference in price.
For the first time ever we have agreed that we would like to visit the Nicon again. Next time I will take washing up liquid and a sponge but apart from that I would not change a thing. We missed Nik and Toni when we came home as they were such great company and my son cried his eyes out when he said goodbye to Costas and George. Every one was so kind to my 7 year old son and he enjoyed playing in the playground and on the computer, the pool table, the football table and the dart board. He met lots of friends around his age and he really had a ball. I don't think there is a doubt in our minds that we will be going to the Nicon next year and visiting all the parts of the island that we did'nt get to see this time. What a beautiful island and what a great hotel.

if you are looking for a chilled out holiday then this is the place! my partner and i returned to the nicon this year for the second time and we weren't disappointed.Everything you want in a holiday is here! Every member of staff is so pleasant and helpful, the bar staff costas, tina and george during the day nic and toni in the evening and spiros, nics father on reception, not to forget the lovely luna the dog who follows spiros just everywhere! Also the maids were lovely and provided an excellent service by keeping the apartment spotless. the Nicon is situated about 5-10mins walk from beach and about 30 mins walk to kos town where there are lots of lovely restaurants and tavernas -"mummys cooking " is a good place to go-excellent authentic Greek cuisine where the owner keeps topping up your food "on the house".We were more than happy to eat at the nicon as the food is delicious and very reasonably priced and nic is very happy to give you one or two tips on how to throw a greek dish together! also try the cocktails 3 euros for a large one, "west indian yellow bird" is a good one and yummy! we also had a brilliant time at the greek night 10 euros. you get half litre of wine and the food is plentiful and delicious. then the professional greek dancers do their stuff and its all so lively and fun. even my partner joined in, well his own version! There is absolutely nothing we can fault about the nicon and the weather was perfect for the whole two weeks in fact too hot but then you can always have a dip in the pool which was kept spotless at all times. Well we know for sure we will be returning to the nicon and are counting the days already!

We returned home from the Nicon Apartments yesterday, and miss it already! the apartments are family run and this made a huge difference to the value for money with this hotel. we arrived at half 10 at night and Nicos showed us to our room, reception isnt 24hrs but we found him at the bar, once we had ditched the suitcases we went back to the bar where Nicos has no problem with cooking us a midnight snack (literally) Nicos and his fiance are lovely and will go out of thier way to help you, if your not sure on which direction to head in (as we hadnt a clue where kos town was!) then just ask he will tell you where to eat, and drink. Kos town is a good 30 min walk but it is on the flat and walks along the harbour, we had a taxi the one night which cost us 8 euros, between 4 that was perfect.
we went on the Agean cruise booked through thomson this was an amazing trip, and complete piece of mind having our fantastic rep Rachel with us throughout. Lido waterpark is a good trip too, we didnt use the thomson bus transfer, and got the free bus the park put on, this was fine but extremely busy!
the pool at the apartments is the cleanest i have ever come across abroad, infact the complex is really well maintained. the cleaner came every day except sunday (understandable) however im not completely convinced she changed our bed sheets at all as a dirt mark we made on the first day seemed to stay all week, also im unsure the towels where changed aswell, however this wasnt a huge deal as im sure if we had of asked we would have gotten cleans ones easily.
the air con is expensive, 8euros a night, Spiros (the apartments owner, Nicos' father) wasnt too keen on us picking the hottest nights and using a sort of pay as you go way to keep down on the costs. as we where away with another couple aswell, we had 2 seperate apartments, one night we decided to cook in as we had all the facilities that are needed, so our friends came to ours for a balcony dinner, however the next time we saw Spiros he was not happy that our friends had been in our room, he said there was only enough water and electricty for 2 people, and we must not let them in our room, i found this a little odd as they would have used more electicity by cooking dinner in thier room aswell as us in ours, and they didnt user any elecricity or water whilst in our room, i was also a little wary of the fact he was clearly watching us a lot to realise this.
the greek night was brilliant and really well run, the food was amazing and the whole night was great value for money.
overall i loved these apartments, they where a little dated like most greek self catering are, but the cleanliness of them on thewhole made such a difference! the bar is so reasonably priced both food and drinks, and the food is brilliant! we loved our time at the nicon and loved the fact it wass thomson only, it made the complex atmosphere so relaxed and every one so sociable, and all english, huge benefit! we met a lovely couple towards the end of our holdiay who i hope are still enjoying the sun! : )

We've just returned from the Nicon after 2 weeks. The hospitality is great and Nicos, Toni, Costas & George who run the bar and kitchen give you a great welcome. The rooms are clean and have everything you expect for a self catering holiday. The food in the Nicon is great for afternoon bar meals and very good value(especially the Greek salad with Tuna) also the local lager is 2.50 euros a pint and 5 euros for 1/2 litre of wine. The 3 nights the Nicon organise are great fun.
The apartments are about a 20-25 minute walk from the centre of Kos Town which is an easy walk along the sea front. There are some great restaurants close to The Nicon. The Akrogiali was excellent with tables beside the sea ( turn right at the bottom of the road) also Tony's pizza & pasta on the front on the walk into Kos Town was fantastic. Kos town itself has plenty of restaurants to choose from as well, (Mamas Kitchen, Alexandra and The Fish House) and it's also a lovely picturesque town to stroll around.
A trip to Zia in the mountains is well worth undertaking as the views of the sunset from the restaurants are stunning. If you decide to take a boat trip book one from the harbour as it's a lot cheaper than booking thru the travel agents( the 3 island trip was excellent).
All in all this was a fantastic holiday and we'll definitely be returning.

Me and my girlfriend stayed at the Nicon Apartments from 6th August - 13th August and loved every moment of being there. We are a couple aged 19 and 23. We arrived just after 2 a.m. when Nicos showed us to our apartment on the top floor. The apartment had everything we needed for our self catering holiday and everything was very clean and welcoming.

Nicon is a 25-30 min stroll into Kos Town (all on the flat) or an easy 5 min bicycle ride with bicycles being very cheap to rent for the week (18 euros) from next door to the apartments. 30 seconds down the road there is an excellent supermarket with everything available at reasonable prices. Kos Town has hundreds of places to eat and drink as well.

If you want to stay and eat at the Nicon the food is very reasonable and extremely nice. The drinks are really cheap (3 euros for a cocktail). Monday is quiz night, Tuesday is Greek Night and Friday is Karaoke Night, which I would both recommend. . The pool is great and a perfect size if you want to have a swim or simply relax. Costas, Nicos, Toni and Spiros are great people. Nicos and Toni are always having a laugh and joke with you, they treat you like family.

Nicon apartments are a great place to stay if you're thinking of going to Kos. The island is beautiful and Nicon allows you to enjoy you're stay while being in a great area to stay on the island.

Stayed at the Nicon (Room 40) from 25th July to 7th of August. Arrived not long after midnight and Nicos showed us to our very clean ground floor one bedroom apartment. It's fairly basic but was very clean and had everything we needed - cooking rings, kettle, toaster and an unusually good (i.e cold) fridge. Air con was extra but having been self catering in Greece for the last 5 years we expected that. The shower was powerful and loads of hot water (in Crete last year it was often cold after one and a half showers). We were two adults and a 15 and a 12 year old, but there was plenty of room and a large balcony.

Nicon is a 25-30 min stroll into Kos Town (all on the flat) or a 5 min (v cheap) bus ride. Over the road there is an excellent supermarket and nearby 4 very nice Tavernas. Kos Town has hundreds of places to eat and drink as well. Must say the sunset views from the local Tavernas are breathtaking. Our local favourite was the Blue Ocean.

If you want to stay and eat at the Nicon the food is very reasonable and extremely nice. The drinks are amazingly cheap (3 euros for a cocktail all the time). Monday is quiz night, Tuesday is Greek Night and Friday is Karaoke Night. It's all very laid back and not cheesy and its up to you if you participate or not. Our room was very near the bar and the pool but you could hardly hear anything at night. Great pool by day and a fantastic bar at night. Costas, Nicos, Toni and Spiros will really look after you...they really are lovely people. It was my daughters birthday while we were away and Toni sorted us a lovely birthday cake and really made a fuss of her. It made her holiday.

I cant recommend the Nicon highly enough. We had a fantastic time and didnt want to leave. We are hoping to go back next year...its a real home from home now.
