Just returned from a one week stay at Denise Apartments. What so many people have said is absolutely true - the friendliness & welcome you get are superb, & make all the difference in the world. The apartments are run the traditional, old-fashioned way; family-owned and family-run; the owner Niko & his wife welcome you as if to their home, and into their family, from the moment you arrive (even if, as was the case for us, it's 3.30am when you get there. Niko waited up for us, and offered us a drink from the bar).
The family and their staff are all extremely helpful, friendly, and polite. Nothing is too much trouble. We had a noisy room (directly above the bar & kitchen) to begin with; when we asked on our first morning to change rooms, we were immediately offered an alternative with no fuss, no questions asked, and nothing but smiles.
Niko & Effie are hands-on, running the bar & attending to customers all day long, along with their great team of staff. Their kids play in & around the pool, and their little dog is often to be seen. The apartments were originally run by Niko's father & have been handed down; I am sure the same will happen again. This is a true, and nowadays quite rare, old-fashioned family business. It is easy to see why many guests develop such a bond to the place, and go back time and time again.
Bar snacks were available from 9am to 9.30pm when we were there, and the food is extremely good - thanks to Katalina for her superb cooking; it'samazing what she manages to do in such a tiny kitchen. The menu is mostly sandwiches, fried & grilled hot food, and salads; and pizzas which are absolutely delicious. The bar is well-stocked and I can particularly recommend the 2-for-1 cocktails in Happy Hour (twice daily; 12noon to 3pm, and 7pm to 9pm). As the bar serves a full range of refreshments, guests are not allowed to take their own food or drink into the pool area.
The grounds are lovely, beautifully planted & tended. The freshwater pool is unheated, so rather cold when you first get in; but very refreshing. The pool is immaculately clean, and unusually it does not have a strong chemical or chlorine smell; in that sense the pool water is the best quality I've ever come across.
The rooms - like the whole complex in fact - are also immaculately clean, and are serviced 6 days a week. We had a one bedroom apartment, with twin beds (very comfortable) in the bedroom, and bench seats in the kitchen which double up as 2 extra beds (which I'd say would be fine for kids, but not ideal for adults). The fittings and the decor throughout the apartments are quite dated and tired; but the rooms are perfectly adequate, and very comfortable. Air conditioning is available for an extra 40 Euros per week, though we did not need it when we were there. There is no safe in the room, but you can rent a safety deposit box at reception for 10 Euros a week. If you need a hairdryer, be sure to take your own as none are available. There was no TV in the apartment (which didn't bother us at all) but there are large-screen TVs in the bar area.
The apartments are a fair distance from the town and facilities. We walk pretty slowly & it took us 50 minutes or so to walk to the centre of Kos town. We sometimes used the bus, which is very cheap (1.20 Euro one-way), and easy to use. The nearest supermarket (quite a small one) is 15 minutes from the apartments; a larger one is 20 minutes. There are some nice beachfront restaurants 15-25 minutes from the apartments, if you don't want to go as far as the town. It's fair to say that, if you want lots of choice of bars & restaurants & facilities on your doorstep, Denise apartments may not be for you.
Overall, we were delighted with our stay here. It's the sheer friendliness & the total attention to service, that makes this place so special. Long may it continue to be run this way; and a great big thank you to Niko, Effie, Katalina, and all of the team for looking after us so well!
