“Terrific staff and management make this a hotel you don't want to leave”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2013

We wanted to see another side of Portugal and decided on some walking in the Serra da Estrala. This decision was easy as staying in the Casa das Penhas is something to look forward to. The staff here are genuinely happy to help. There is a smashing pool and sauna, and very detailed and well marked routes for day hikes.

Our thanks to everyone and to the enthusiastic chef Bruno too.

After reading the reviews here on tripadvisor we decided to stay here for 4 nights. We were looking for a nice designed hotel which is reasonable priced and could offer us a relaxing vacation.

The design is danish, vintage, contemporary and warm. besides the rooms there are several livingrooms where you can watch dvd's by the fireplace - just excellent. Being a perfectionist i think they could do an even better job with the interior decoraction as at some place it lookst a bit like it is just put together without giving it enought thought. The rooms are a little small but was fine for us.

Every night there is a 5 course dinner offered for 30 euro per person. This food is amazing. Living in Amsterdam and travelling constantly all over the world, I am not lying when I say that this chef is doing an amazing job and is able to create a new, spectacular menu, every night. We enjoyed this a lot. After the 5 courses you can take cheese and wine and enjoy it in one of the livingrooms or in the restaurant. Do notice that if you do not take 5 courses but refuse to take one (I did this one night with the desert as it was too much for me) you have to pay seperately for all courses and it is more expensive than 30 euro. This was a bit tricky and not very hospitable in my opnion.

During the 3 days we were there, we were there we did the walking trails and it was truly amazing, so beautiful and so relaxing. The hotel also offers picknick backpacks to bring along.

The staff at this hotel is simply amazing. From the girls doing reception and restaurant in the evening to the "older girls" who do the cleaning and breakfast buffet in the morning, they were all just very very sweet, caring, warmhearted and sincere! They made our stay so special.

The owner also walks around the hotel, i experienced him as less sympathic and sincere than the rest of the staff to be honest. From a hotel manager i expect a welcoming and friendly approach and not a more in the background and dominant appearance.

The spa was great, sauna a bit small but did its job and the pool was refreshing.

Go here for a relaxing holiday if you are looking for a few days of quietness, fresh air and good food. Only thing which maybe should be considered is to make it a an adult-only hotel as children jumping in the pool from a spa hotel is a little disturbing and for the rest there's not that much to do for kids. Though with the warmhearted ladies at this hotel, i don't think they would allow this ;)

This was the most amazing place we stayed in Portugal, or in fact, anywhere! The service and pampering were incredible, from the perfectly packed picnic lunch for our hike, to the candles lit in our room while we were at dinner, to the very detailed trail map and guide for our hike. The design of the hotel and furniture/lighting are beautiful. The food was delicious, from appetizers through dessert. After a full day hike, we both enjoyed a massage. The views of Manteigas were beautiful. It was hard to leave after two nights!

We did stay in the singular suite - which used to be the owners' quarters - and it is fantastically fun and cozy (but not small at all). However, even in a standard room we would have loved our two night stay...honestly debated about extending. The entire lodge/house is a wonder of design - creative and charming and tastefully done. There are panoramic views and wonderful (if moderate) hiking - along with biking and kayaking (the latter only in the summer).

The food is very good - and Luis is an excellent sommelier (as well as hiking companion). However, the entire team/staff is incredibly warm, friendly, and professional.

It is not fancy - it is a modern mountain lodge created and managed with passion for excellence. We would absolutely recommend it to anyone who wanted a day or two or three in the mountains away and above it all.

Room Tip: The master suite is fantastic. We didn't see the standard rooms but assume they were equally ch...

Loved this hotel! Very modern, clean and cosy hotel near Serra da Estrela. Lovely rooms and interior swimming pool - in the winter there is view out to the snowy garden. Breakfast is ok and dinner is fantastic (but a bit expensive). Great massages. When we stayed at this hotel it was very snowy and because the hotel is on a high mountain a tractor had to clean the road all the way down to the centre.

It's quite a trek to get to this hotel high in the mountains over 1400mt, but it is well worth it. We stayed only one night, but can endorse all the previous reviews of Casa das Penhas. Built in 2010 it is very Scandinavian in style with lots of marine ply and concrete, and beautifully fitted out. We were welcomed by a professional staff, and shown the hotel and then our room, - small but well fitted with all you could need and a very comfortable bed. Pre-dinner cocktails and canapes (incl. in the tariff) were served in the lounge, then a 4 course set menu dinner of first rate quality. Whilst at dinner, the turn-down service tidied our room and left candles burning with some nibbles and local port, - a very nice touch. Breakfast was a fresh and extensive buffet. Wish we could have stayed longer at this fantastic place.

We stayed for 4 nights at Casa das Pendhas Douradas and enjoyed every moment.
The hotel staff are kind and welcoming and take good care of the guests. The hotel is in a good location for exploring the local area, hiking, kayaking, mountain biking etc, or going off by car to local historic villages. On the first day we borrowed the hotels kayaks which were picked up and dropped off at the lake for us at the time we requested. We also used the bikes, and the hotel offered to pick us up if we didn't fancy going uphill on the way back! There aren't many restaurants nearby, and the nearest town is very difficult to navigate if you are driving and using a sat nav, so we ended up eating evening meals at the hotel. The food was excellent (chef made vegetarian for me) and included a pre-meal drink in the lounge and a snack. The food price was good, and we were allowed to chose less than the full set course. Breakfast is the regular selection of buffet style hot and cold foods and was very good. Throughout the day, snacks and drinks are available. The hotel has many books guests can enjoy in the lounges as well as DVD's to watch in the room or on the projector. It is worth visiting the view point 10 minutes walk from the hotel on a big rock with views down to Manteigas.
Take a road map of Portugal as the hotel is off Sat Nav routes and can be difficult to return back to after day trips.
