“The Kellerwirt makes a great base for a walking holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2010

We booked a guided walking holiday for 1 week staying at the Kellerwirt. The hotel was clean, traditional and served wonderful food. The guided walking tours were moderately challenging but were the best part of the holiday (apart from the wine tasting evening with Hans which was hilarious!). Our only negative comment would be that the mattresses and pillows would benefit from an upgrade, but don't let that put you off - it's a great place to stay.

Mine host most accommodating, and stafff all most willing and helpful with any queries.
Food - large varied breakfast and adequate choice of lots of very good food for dinner. Free packed lunch basic but ample.
Part hotel modern and part old. We had large excellent room in the old part, fortunately away from the church clock (which doesn't strike in the night) and the road.
Mine hosts free wine tasting enjoyed by all attending.
Walking wonderful and weather warm with occasional thunderstorm in the evening.
Can't wait to return to this hotel.

As a family, the hotel was really well suited- relaxed with such hospitable staff. The food offered was authentic and delicious, plenty to keep you going for the whole day without the complimentary packed lunch that is offered. There were many activities in and around the village of Oberau to keep us busy for the whole week, regardless of the extreme changes in weather. The wine tasting evening was a gem of an experience, incredible to hear it from such a down to earth, charming man. I would recommend this hotel to groups of any size or age without a doubt!

We have been many times in Oberau and enjoyed Claudias excellent appartements every time (in different appartements - and it was always very charming) ..with home made Xmast sweet plates e.g. and other nice little details.
Hans, Claudia and the entire team performing an outstanding performance when it comes to "dine and wine" .
Feels so good to be pampered by the warm hospitality, excellent choice of wines, surrounded by walls backdated to the 12th century...
The skiressort is not not too intimidating and in summer or fall a great place for hikeing!
And when Tyrolian musicians playing - well, you better have a waterproof make-up :-)

Hans and staff really made us feel welcome. The walking is great and it's easy to find reasonable walks without joining the organized walks. Very peaceful, easy to travel through the valley on the 'bummelbahn'. Booked very late so room not wonderful, but clean and adequate. Will be back!

Everything about this place says "come back". The staff, the food and the ambiance are just so right. Don't tell anyone else, leave this delightful place to those of us who have discovered this great place to relax.

If you like small hotels where you are treated as a friend rather than a mere client you will love it here. Hans and the rest of the staff really go out of their way to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. Oberau is a small village so don't expect nightlife especially not outside the ski season though Hans provided entertainment on three evenings (a musical duo, complimentary cocktails followed by a film in English and a wine tasting which was free of charge to hotel guests.) The latter was particularly interesting as he is so knowledgeable about wine and is in addition such an amusing story teller.
Breakfast on a morning was always plentiful with a large array of breads, cereals, yoghurt, fruit, eggs, cheese and cold meats. We were on a walking package with Inghams and the hotel seemed happy to bring forward the breakfast time when we had an early start. A special mention here goes to Sandra the breakfast waitress who was always most pleasant and obliging even when, at times, she seemed rushed off her feet. Menus for the evening meal (4 courses with three choices of main) were on the tables in the morning. On the day we left Hans was up early to see we got some breakfast before we went. He even offered the transfer driver a coffee so we could finish our drinks!
The only thing that disappointed us was the weather - rain from Monday to Thursday morning. Fortunately we had full waterproof clothing and walked regardless but we did miss out on some spectacular views and some of the walks had to be modified for safety reasons. The Wildschoenau walking programme was very good indeed (5 guided walks) and the guide herself, a local girl called Sonja, was first rate. We are tempted to do the same package again at a time when the weather is better. If we do we will be adding our number to the very many repeat guests at the Kellerwirt.
