“Beautiful setting, good food.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

Stayed three nights at the Cinnamon Lodge. We had two rooms next to each other in the bottom half of the little lodges - rooms were spacious and well kitted out, good air con and clean, modern bathrooms. The breakfasts were excellent, with a vast choice of different foods (same for evening buffets, although there are also other restaurants). It's the setting that makes the place though - on the edge of a lake, with loads of wildlife (monkeys, water monitors, dozens of different birds), amazing sunsets and plenty of space to wonder around, including the hotel's kitchen garden at the rear of the property, behind the massive banyan tree if that kind of thing. Pool is large, with a shallow section for little kids. The only things that stopped it being a 5 for me were a) the insistence on sweeping up right outside our room (I mean actually on the porch) at 8am, the several powercuts we experienced while we were there and the fact that one TV didn't work properly (of course it would be the teenagers' TV...)

Having to go through Habarana for our holiday across Sri Lanka, we decided to stay in the Cinnamon Lodge after having pleasant experiences at Cinnamon Lakeside and Cinnamon Grand earlier in our stay.
Having booked on Agoda, we were happy with the rate of $120 for a triple room and were expecting a pleasant experience.

Having arrived, the first down fall was the lack of any individuals to greet us. Maybe this was because it was 9pm, but this shouldn't matter, I expected better service first off.

The room we were given was quite far from the main buildings itself. Behind the little lake that looks filthy behind the swimming pool. This part of the resort looks lost in time and I'm sure can't have been upgraded for at least 10 years.

The room was basic to say the least. The TV deserved to be on a scrap heap- a huge monstrosity in the room. The air conditioning must have been installed when the Raj was here- this clanging, whirring ugly thing stuck on the wall and never to be taken down.

The bathroom, although upgraded was not cleaned properly. Brown stains across the tiles edges on the floor. The grill to keep the insects out had holes in it, and can't have been cleaned for a number of years, with remnants of the insect dead buried there in piles! The holes in the insect grill meant we had mosquitoes and other flying creepy crawlies come into the room.

The bed itself was horrible, with the sheets being basic and synthetic, the pillows like they were stuffed with air instead of feathers, and the extra bed must have been bought at a jumble sale for people wanting to get rid of old stock.

The food at the hotel, although plentiful in option, is lacking in quality and expensive in price. It costs nearly £15 per person, which is expensive in Sri Lanka. And why you have those disgusting shots of mixed juice bewilders me.

Internet is good and accessible everywhere, but takes forever to load. Extremely slow.

There are some aspects I do like: the swimming pool is large and lovely, the estate itself is beautiful and large, and the spa, although expensive, is extremely relaxing. The animals are also quite entertaining.

So overall:
Rooms: 25/50
Bathroom: 13/20
Service and Other Amenities: 40/60
Value: 4/10
Hotel Rank from those stayed in Sri Lanka: 16th out of 19
Total SB Score: 59.5%

Rooms need updating. They are some of the worst I've experienced in Sri Lanka. Otherwise, a nice place.

Room Tip: Do not stay in 103

Lovely rooms, friendly staff, great pool, really good place to explore cultural triangle from. The breakfast was fantastic - huge choice and excellent quality, Although the dinner buffet seems expensive - about £15 per head - the variety and quality was excellent and you can eat until you burst. We tended to have lots of small helpings. Grounds have many beautiful trees, monkeys, lizards and giant squirrels - nothing for anyone to be worried about.

Room Tip: We had a room near the main block with pool and restaurants which would suit those who don't wan...

Me and My Family have stayed at the Cinnamon Lodge Habarana for several times, and each time it keeps getting better. The service, the facilities and the entire ambience is beyond compare. The staff was terrific - friendly and efficient. They were always very professional, extremely attentive and would go out of the way to help you out

Food was excellent. Buffet had a good spread. The homemade ice cream and the yogurt was so delicious. We were given the opportunity to go in to the hotel kitchen. That was a great experience. Chef Isuru explained us the functions of each and every unit of the kitchen. We met the regional chef and the executive chef Nimal Rajapaksha. We got to know that they only use natural food colors and flavors when preparing food. Their main concern is to prepare nutritionally balanced, healthier meals which are delicious and enjoyable for their guests. Meanwhile we got to know that chef nimal rajapaksha is a culinary Olympic medalist.

Athula showed us the butterfly garden and the organic farm. (In addition to butterflies, butterfly garden also feature the insects' nectar plants and host plants.).He also arrange us the elephant safari at short notice.

The hotel is very peaceful and serene built on the lake with beautiful views. All in all if you want relaxation combined with some excursions this is the ultimate place.

I have stayed at many wonderful hotels, but this is truly the best experience I have ever had.
A big thank you to Chef Nimal,Chef Isuru and Athula.

Lovely bungalows scattered around the property which looks out to the lake filled with bird life. The rooms are large and well presented. Staff are happy to oblige with requests though communication is sometimes an issue as they nod and smile regardless of whether they understand or not. Pool was large and refreshing following a day exploring the Cultural Triangle. Buffet was a little disappointing due to the lack of variety.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the lake. If mobility is a problem then ask for a room close to the po...

I booked this hotel through agoda and got a great deal. Just room only but the driver's quarters was included and for about 300 rupees the driver's food (breakfast, lunch and dinner) can be added. The buffet dinner was expensive (2900 rupees per person).

The kids really enjoyed the huge pool. The service was excellent. The lake view was fabulous and we didn't find any mosquitoes either.

A nice retreat to discover the sites in the area.

The hotel is 31 years old and is set in a lovely garden, with a nice lake and tropical garden with two species of monkey hanging everywhere.
the rooms are tired and could use a lifting but all is functional except for the synthetic bed sheets, the pillows are awful. The laundry there if very reasonably priced and top notch !
The Pool is nice but considering the hotel size there could be another one.
The only down point there are the buffet for breakfast / Lunch / Dinner,
Quality of food is mediocre at best, they think quantity while quality does not seem to be considered.
internet is free but extremely slow
