“fantastic, would go back there in a second!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2008

What a fantastic place!

The service was outstanding, the people were so friendly and welcoming.
On arrival we were given an amazing drink with avacado in it and star fruit and cold face towels fragranced with cinammon, such a lovely touch!
The reception is actually outside in the forecourt where the cars pull up and looks great.

The whole place is very serene and peaceful. There are monkeys running around and all you can hear are birds in the trees, its such a lovely place.

We visited the cinnamon lodge as part of out ceylon north tour whilst on our honeymoon.

The food was fantastic, and the lodge was lovely.
The staff decorated our bed with flowers every night, there was such attention to detail and nothing was too much trouble.

We thouroughly enjoyed our stay here and would love to go back again one day.

We only stayed one night (on our way to Polonnaruwa) but it was fantastic! The resort (formally Habarana Lodge, now divided in to Cinnamon Lodge and Chaaya) is on beautiful, lush gardens and the rooms are in separate chalets around the grounds. Its so peaceful and private. You can see lots of "layna" (the very cute local squirrels) and birds, and monkeys too.

The room was tastefully decorated, the bed was so comfy, and the bathroom was lovely.

Its a pricey place, but well worth it. From the moment you step in to the grand reception area, you're treated like a special guest by the friendly and professional staff.

The pool is lovely, the restaurant area is so large and well laid out. The food was great too.

A classy resort in all respects.

We spent 2 nights at the Cinnamon Lodge on a mini tour of the interior as part of our extended honeymoon.

The hotel was very good and the rooms are situated in the extensive grounds in individual units and small blocks of 2’s and 4’s. We had our own detached bungalow quite close to the main facilities (No.5) which had a small ante room large bedroom area and a good size bathroom with both a bath and a separate shower. It was very well serviced, kept very clean had a large comfortable bed and everything worked as it should.

It was quite busy when we stayed there as England were playing in the first of the ODI’s at Dambulla (the one we lost) so we had the Sri Lankan team and a lot of X Pats for company. Lasith Malinga the only recognisable one to us because of his ‘highlighted’ afro – we also bumped into him in a small café on route to the hotel that morning. Overheard in the hotel bar was a lot of praise for the standard of the hotel which was well deserved.

The main facilities (bar & restaurant) although undercover are open on all sides so beware of the mossies as the hotel is situated next to a large lake and has a number of smaller ponds in the grounds. They also have a large pool and spa, if you actually get the time as the majority of residents are only there for they short stay to take in the sights of Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa

The food was very good buffet style with both European and local dishes and the desserts kept in their own special air conditioned room. We had one ‘special’ 4 course a la carte silver service meal as part of the ‘honeymoon’ deal which did cause some degree of envy from the other diners as it was served in the main restaurant area and again the standard was very good. There is also an air conditioned sea food restaurant that looked very good but this was closed for use of the cricket team during our stay.

We had a local excursion to the elephant rides around the adjacent lake, which was very good as we were the last out at about 5.00pm and the ride takes you around and through the lake. As it was getting dark on the return leg the local wildlife was visible and the flocks of fruit bats were out on their evening flight.
Be warned the elephants only do about 30yards to the banana - which can be bought on route (obviously)

We visited the Fortress at Sigiriya and the climb is easier than you initially may think when you look at the rock on your arrival - only 2040 steps. It is well worth getting a guide (Albert was great and very knowledgeable) and a ‘sherpa’ to carry your bag and help ‘push’ you up the steeper parts. Both should cost no more than £5 between them. Take plenty of water, sun cream and hat as it is very exposed and can get very hot.

We also visited Polonnaruwa and the caves at Dambulla both worth a visit; it’s also a good climb up to the caves, check the opening times before you ascend as you could get up there to find they are shut.

The Lodge was definitely one of the best hotels we stayed in during our tour of Sri Lanka

My wife, I and 2 children aged 8 and 6 stayed over the christmas period for 4 nights in one of the suites. The room was excellent with the master bedroom upstairs and the twin room downstairs and plenty of space. We had a very helpful butler called Naleem. The food was good and we would recommend the romantic seafood dinner where the staff set up a special table in the grounds. The spa was adequate but could do with a refurb and is not as relaxing as some we have been to. The pool was a delight to the children and us alike. The hotel is well situated to visit the local temples around. We also tried the elephant ride, which is approx $20 per person( kids were free). They take you through the lake and jungle. Its close to hotel and ok. It costs a lot more if you book through the hotel and its the same place you go to, so go direct.
The christmas eve dinner was good and Santa arrived on an elephant to give presents to the children. Better than a lot of christmas eve functions we have had in previous years. The band played until 2am, needless to say with 2 young children we never quite made it that late, but we all enjoyed the night.
The only issue I had was I booked via Red Dot Tours and paid directly to the tour company. Upon departure I was presented a bill for accommodation which was a lot less than what we had paid the tour company. I told them I had paid the tour company directly and they confirmed that. However afterwards I complained to Red Dot Tours about the room rate variation and they took over a week to come back and state the bill was an error on behalf of the hotel and there was no overcharging on their behalf. You can make your own judgement but we would recommend you check all prices direct as well as tour companies to ensure you get the best price.

As part of a three week holiday in Sri Lanka,we (nine family members aged from 5 to 61) stayed at the Cinnamon Lodge to celebrate my 60th birthday. My husband and I had stayed at the hotel in August 2004 and when asked where I wanted to spend my 60th birthday had plumped for Sri Lanka and the Lodge. We all had a marvellous time - the younger members of the party went off and did the cultural thing (my husband and I had done it all in 1984) while us oldies watched the grandson. He had a ball - the monkeys, water monitors and lizards were his favourites - he loved the lizard going for a swim in the pool! We went for an elephant ride on the morning of my birthday, and in the evening my brother and two daughters, along with the wonderful Neleesha from the hotel, arranged for a group of Kandyan drummers and dancers, plus birthday elephant, to come and dance for me! The rest of the guests in the hotel thought it was great!
The rooms were lovely - flowers on the bed each night and a special message for my birthday. All the staff were great, couldn't do enough for us. The food was really good, especially the Sri Lankan breakfasts. My favourite hotel of all time!

  • Liked — the setting - by the tank, with all the wildlife around us
  • Disliked — dim lighting at night around the grounds

This hotel has to be one of the best hotels available in Sri Lanka, the rooms are wonderfully spacious with a very modern design, huge shower in the bathroom, everything thought of slippers, dressing gown, cable tv with plenty of english channels, lovely food in the restaurant overlooking the pool and what can you say about the staff- they are so friendly and helpful, nothing is too much trouble and always smiling, in particular Naleem (who is the head butler) in the bar and Upsaema (i think thats how you spell it) the captain of the restaurant- lovely people!! We spent 7 fabulous nights at this hotel and every one of them special especially the last night where they prepared a special 4 course meal for us. Can't recommend this hotel enough!!!!

We had 2 nights here and it was a great base to see the sights. The hotel buffet was good if served a little cold. Rooms we light and airy. There's not much to do at the hotel itself (big swimming pool) but you're probably here for the local sights which were great.

Just outside the hotel (5 mins) we had a fantastic full body herbal massage, steam and sauna - 3,000 Rs (£15) for a 90 minute treatment from experts. Great fun.
