“A home-stay with a friendly vibe”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2014

We stayed here for 3 nights, last month. The home-stay is run by a friendly couple – Ajith manages the guests while shy Mutu is the secret behind their fabulous breakfasts and dinners. E-mail correspondence during booking was prompt. The location is just right – a little off Habarana’s main road, which makes it quiet and peaceful.

Rooms and bathrooms are spacious. I’d have liked a window with a view, but the room was occupied (ask for the room out in the front, which does). However, there is a very comfy porch outside the house, so I spent a lot of my time there. This is also a great place to chat with fellow-guests. If you want a room with more privacy, ask for the room outside, with a verandah. It’s a bit smaller than the other rooms, though. Our bed was comfortable and had clean sheets.

The Sri Lankan style breakfasts were hearty and served in the roofed dining area adjacent to the house. They do not offer lunch, but sometimes offer dinner. We had dinner twice and the food was excellent both times, with home-cooked Sri Lankan fare. On one of the days, Ajith recommended Nalin’s, a small eatery on the main road, which dishes out hoppers, rottis and kotthu rottis. That was a good way to sample Sri Lankan fast-food.

We enjoyed Ajith’s & Mutu’s hospitality and the endless cups of tea on the porch, chatting with Ajith or the other guests. Ajith also helped us book an English-speaking guide for Sigiriya. Mutu went out of her way to do laundry for us and didn’t charge for it either. The day we checked out to drive to Kandy, Ajith called in the evening to check if we’d reached okay. All these gestures went a long way into making this a comfortable stay.

We booked in advance, arrived by local bus from Negombo, got off at Habarana crossroads & short tuk tuk ride to Ajith & Mutu's delightful & accommodating home stay. Ajith is his own best asset - a genuinely charming man. This was a quiet & simple home stay but all the essentials are there. A wine shop & upmarket hotel with pool that Ajith's guests can use at very low cost. Ajith advised us on how to get to the various cultural triangle sites that we wanted to visit. Polonnaruwa, Ritigala & Pidurangala were unforgettable. Ajith's neighbour (Sareth?) took us in his tuk tuk to latter two sites & was a considerate & thoughtful guide. We went by bus to Polonnaruwa which was perfectly manageable. (We are two old codgers in our 50's.) Extra bonus was Mutu's cooking. We were lucky she was in a position to cook for us on all three evenings - I think it depends on there being sufficient demand, and to be fair she deserves an evening off sometimes. Thank you to Ajith for making us welcome & comfortable.

A lovely location, though away from the hub of the village. Clean well appointed room, lovely garden, delicious food. A big downside for us was that though we had paid extra for 'driver room with meals' ,that Ajith booked at another hotel, the driver had to pay for his own food and we had to negotiate his getting a refund from Ajith for his breakfast, at a minimum. This was not willingly given. It is customary for a hotel to provide a room and food for a driver, so we were already paying over the odds and were met with distinct lack of generosity. We felt that business overruled hospitality here in the manner of the owner, particularly as we had our own driver/guide and did not need to buy any trips. Also evening meals may not always be available (for 2 of our 3 nights here) and on these evenings the property was unoccupied.

A lovely couple - the super efficient husband and his fantastic cooking wife - provide a fantastic homestay experience. Relaxed atmosphere, lovely breakfast and dinners and assistance in just about anything. I had a problem with my driver and although it was not Ajith's problem or mistake, he immediately offered his help sorting it out. Sleep quality was not that perfect (I could hear the noise from the family late at night), but the hospitality made up for it.

Mutu is the perfect base for exploring the Habarana area and Cultural Triangle.
Ajith and his family make you feel very welcome and cannot do enough for you.
If you want to experience wonderful Sri Lanka hospitality, this is the place for you.

Ajith was not only an excellent host but also an excellent tour guide. He kindly helped us plan trips and excursions. The trips he booked for us were always professional, well organised and great value for money. He even came all the way to Colombo airport to pick up when we arrived!

Mutu is Ajith's wife, who 'cooks up a storm in the kitchen'. We took the half board option - breakfast and evening meal. Mutu cooked traditional Sri Lankan food- every meal was delicious. This was a fantastic opportunity to sample local home cooked food and recipes. The dishes were so good we are still talking about them a month later. I have even had to buy a Sri Lankan cook book to try and see if I can cook them at home!

Ajith's brother Gamini, is another bonus to any stay at Mutu (he's the driver). His driving was very safe & he was very reliable. He went out of his way to ensure we made the most of our time in Habarana. He picked us up from the airport and was our guide for the following five days.

We would suggest this hotel and as read before,it is a very good location for a couple of nights! The place in itself is a bit isolated to find, but anyone knows directions!
New structure to adjust in a few things, but rooms are nice comfortable and clean! Food provided is very nice, homemade by the wife! He is very nice and needs to add few more rooms because the place is very nice! Remember they don t accept credit cards!

Just finished an amazing 3 nights at Mutu Village. This is definitely the place to stay in Habarana and, in my opinion, is a reason in itself to base yourself in Habarana while you explore the Cultural Triangle.

The service at Mutu Village is exceptional. Ajith, Mutu and Gamini (Ajith's brother and the Guesthouse driver) went out of their way to make our stay 100% enjoyable. They even arranged a birthday cake on my birthday there and Ajith also traveled by bus from Habarana to Dambulla (about 1 hour) after we had checked out to bring us the sunglasses we had left behind.

Mutu Village essentially took care of our itinerary in the Cultural Triangle area. We had prearranged for Gamini to pick us up in Negombo and take us around the Cultural Triangle area, using Habarana as a base. He was a truly great driver. Always on time, great sense of humour and always full of suggestions of additional stops we might like to make along the way (including his brothers' hoppers restaurant on the main road in Habarana - delicious).

The location of the Guesthouse is set back off the main road in Habarana in a quite part of town. The rooms are great. Clean, tidy, nice bathrooms and plenty of wifi and hot water, if that's a must for you. We ate all our breakfasts and dinners at the guesthouse. The food was delicious. Breakfasts were eggs, hoppers, and delicious breads. Dinners were a variety of delicious Sri Lanka meals prepared expertly by Ajith's wife, Mutu.

I cannot recommend this place enough. It's a small property but with great amenities and service, at a reasonable price. STAY HERE!!!
