“Blissful Break”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2013

We stayed here for two nights in late September and congratulated ourselves on finding such a treat. Doxford Hall is a marvellous place that lives up to its reputation and awards. The staff were most welcoming and obviously proud of the Hall. Our room was fabulous, spacious and beautifully appointed with a very comfortable super king bed. We had phoned ahead to ask for a room with a bath & shower and that's what ws provided with no problem.
Dinner was superb - two AA rosettes well derved with plenty of choice, excellent service and a good wine list. So the setting is wonderful, the staff expert and we enjoyed walking to Lindisfarne on Holy Isle and a visit to the splendid Alnwick Gardens.
This hotel is less than two hours from our home, ideal for a short break with lots to do in the area.

Stayed for 1 night 3rd. Oct. to celebrate our wedding anniversary and had a great stay. The staff were very welcoming, friendly and efficient. We had stayed here once before and knew what to expect and we were not disappointed. The services and the amenities are of a high standard and the staff work hard to maintain these services without being obvious. The bar service and food are of a high standard, due to the hotel being fully booked that week we wished we could have stayed for more than the one night. We are returning in December for a stay and Christmas party night so are looking forward to going back.

Room Tip: Try and upgraded to at least an executive room

Stayed here for two nights in early April to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary. The hotel staff were very friendly without being overbearing or stuffy. Location is best described as isolated, no traffic noise whatsoever which makes the setting tranquil. Rooms are nicely furnished, tastefully decorated and spotless. Very good food served in the restaurant, only disappointment there was no lamb on the menu ( thought there would have been in April) and breakfast felt a little formal. Reasonably priced wine list. For a romantic get away from it all break or celebration, I would recommend this hotel.

I was given a present from my husband of a spa afternoon with afternoon tea with our two daughters and I was not disappointed. As i had already been lucky enough to have stayed there before I knew what to expect. Staff at the reception desk were very good and showed us where the spa area was. When we got there, there were no staff around to help us and sat around for over 20 minutes before we were attended to. We were very pleased with the treatments we had, I would recommend the express facial. We again had to ask about robes and changing areas and were left to discover what was on offer ourselves. The pool area is very comprehensive and there is a lovely relaxation room that we found, The afternoon tea was served in the Georgian room and was excellent, again the service fell a little short. We had a fab time but feel the spa staff should be there to inform and guide you so you can enjoy everything that is on offer.

You deserve a prize for finding this place! Sat nav will get you there but the public highway signage is awful. This delightful hotel is situated about 7 miles nortth of Alnwick and to the east of the A1 on the network of tiny roads before you hit the coast. The beautiful building exterior is late Georgian, semi Paladian, set in lovely gardens and is a delight to the eye. The interior has been messed about a bit but is efficient and works well to service the needs of residents. The furniture and fittings are not compatible with the Georgian exterior but all in all the interior is not unattractive. It is easy to see why it is a popular wedding hotel. We stayed two nights. The room was a good size and comfortable with a nice view over the gardens. The en suite did what it as supposed to do, was well finished and had a spa bath. We were unable to get a table in the dining room on the first night until late on so we settled for a bar meal. We were not disappointed with the bar supper. The food was excellent. I had a burger which for once was not served with the usual pointless and tasteless bun, but in a ciabatta sandwich, and which was delicious. The pre dinner dry martini was correctly assembled and chilled. Much appreciated! On the second night we had dinner in the restaurant. The food was again excellent - not Michelin star, but nicely presented, properly cooked and plenty of flavour. I had the Northumbrian beef fillet which was rare and beautifully cooked. My other half had the smoked haddock risotto which was equally scrummy. The breakfasts were also good. The only niggle was the black pudding which was limp and oddly tasteless (an unusual characteristic for black pudding!). There is an emphasis on food ingredients being "locally sourced" but perhaps they need to look further afield for the black pudding supplier (ie Stornoway or Simon Howie from Perthshire at Tescos!!). By contrast, the kipper I had on the second day was one of the best ever: moist, plump, packed with flavour and not over smoked - excellent. A real joy! Finally the staff. From the cleaning girls to Reception to the bar to the restaurant, they were , in our experience, friendly, warm, helpful and efficient (with good eye contact). Mostly recruited locally, the north east has managed to supply some really pleasant staff for this establishment. We also sampled the spa facilities. The pool is attractive and in a pleasant building and my wife assures me that she enjoyed an excellent "facial". The gardens include a maze which apparently is one of the largest. At the moment the hedging is about 4' high so you are unlikely to lose children, pets and small grandparents etc. It is fun. In summary, this is a lovely hotel, which is comfortable and run by agreeable people who are keen that you enjoy your stay. Go there.
One tip..........when leaving your room, you need to remember to turn the key in the lock. This is not obvious. Most hotels nowadays have self locking doors: this one doesn't.

We did not stay at Doxford Hall, but we did attend a wedding there. Can't comment on the rooms, but the hall and function area have been restored to a very high standard. The food and service was great. The grounds are very well kept. Guests we spoke to had nothing but praise for the hotel and the spa. If they are anything like the areas we saw, they will be fantastic. Would love to go back and stay at the hotel sometime. Great venue for a wedding.

We stayed here on a Saturday for my partners birthday and I cannot fault anything at all! The grounds are lovely and well kept. The location is great. Throughout the hotel the decor and architecture was beautiful. Lovely antique furniture, no ikea flatpacks! We were in room 33 which was HUGE! The bathroom was gorgeous with a lovely shower and roll top bath! And the bed was very comfy. There was a wedding on but we were never disturbed due to the location of the room. We had afternoon tea in the library which was superb and had dinner in the restaurant. Food was top class and service was attentive but not intrusive. I had the ravioli and the fillet of beef which were outstanding. We used the leisure facilities and were happy with everything. I really cannot fault anything with this hotel and would recommend it to anyone! Both of us loved it and cannot wait to go back for a very relaxing stay!
