This was a beautiful hotel, situated in an excellent location. We arrived in quite bad moods as having caught the ferry over from Hong Kong; the employees running the complementary shuttle bus service from the ferry station wouldn't let us get on the bus and kept pointing for us to go in several different directions every time we mentioned "Grand Emperor Hotel". They were unable to speak English and found our bewilderment amusing as they just stood there laughing at and mocking us. I think that it's essential for people working in a customer-facing role to be able to speak English or at the very least, recognise the hotel's name (let alone possess basic etiquette skills)! It's just fortunate that my partner speaks Portuguese and in a desperate attempt tried his luck again with that, only for the employees to say that they hadn't believed we were staying at the hotel and it was the correct bus after all!
After that tiring experience, everything else went really smoothly. The room we stayed in was spacious and well-furnished and the buffet breakfast had a wide variety of high-quality food. The rest of the staff in the hotel were absolutely delightful; both at the front desk and those working in housekeeping. We called up for extra water one night and where other hotels might only give you one or two bottles, we were given an entire carton of water bottles - all complementary - and were left extremely impressed. In addition; the room service menu is very reasonably priced and we ended up ordering it several times.
I would definitely stay at The Grand Emperor again and will recommend it to other friends. For it's price, this is an exceptionally high quality hotel!
