“Great Red Buildings, best visited early in the morning before the streets fill up”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2012

We made a return trip to Rua da Felicidade as we wanted to see what it looked like with all the red shutters and doors closed instead of being busy with locals, visitors and open shops. So we hit the streets early, at least by Macau standards, arriving around 8.30am on Monday morning during the CNY holiday. All shops were closed and the streets were empty, and Rua da Felicidade was simply beautiful.

This was a very pleasant photography experience. We were able to spend considerable time taking photos and enjoying streets to ourselves. We felt this was a much better way to visit compared to the middle of the day when the streets are busy with locals and visitors.

Rua da Felicidade is an interesting street in Macau. While of much lesser interest compared to Macau's more famous locations and attractions nearby in the city centre, it is worth seeking out for those that enjoy photography or want to see something a bit different in Macau. We now think its best to go early before the shops open and the other visitors arrive so you can have the streets to yourself.

“Enjoy the old charm in a much less crowded way”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2011

This famous old street is tucked away from the main drag, yet not difficult to find at all. If you can find Senado Square (you will!), this street is just a one to two minute walk from Avenida De Almeida Ribeiro. This street is called "Fook Lung Sun Gaai" in Chinese, which will help you to find if you ask the locals. It has a lot of really charming old Chinese mixed Portuguese style buildings, offering wonderful opportunities for photography. A lot of original bakery making and selling freshly made biscuits and snacks. Also the famous Fat Siu Lau Portuguese restaurant, and the very retro and reasonably priced Sun Va Hotel for an authentic Macau retro experience. Since it's away from the main drag, it also means less crowded, you get to enjoy the more laid back atmosphere, your eyes will be busy looking and marveling all those things which makes lovely travel memory.

“A happy street”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2011

Rua de Felicidade is weathered, but authentic and populous, in pleasant contrast to denatured heritage mansions or horrible mainland-style strip mall along Rua de Pedro Nolasco da Silva (the latter seems to be metastasizing in all directions). The street used to be lined with brothels, and one can even stay in one (former), it's called Hospedaria San Va. On the night of my visit, there was a popular snack bar scene on the corner and high quality Cantonese opera performed by the neighbors In a jade shop. Small alleys with names like Beco de Misterio (!) are worth a peek.
