We chose this hotel based on some of the positive reviews on this site, the location and price. The location is great. Only about 5-10 min walk from Senado Square and the rest of the city, and walking around the small streets gives you a nice feel of the local town. Right beside Guia Fortress and lighthouse, but we didn't visit. I'm very glad we stayed here rather than $400USD on the venetian.
There is a shuttle bus to Sands hotel, but only at certain times.
Tip: we would take shuttle/walk to Sands, then take a shuttle bus to Venetian for free. From Sands the taxi fare is <$20MOP
As others might have said, be sure you have the name of the hotel in Chinese to show to taxi drivers. No one knows what Guia is, but they know the Chinese name.
There actually is a shuttle from the hotel to the ferry terminal, but only at designated times. If you want to catch it, give the hotel a call before hand. Otherwise, cab fare was only about $20MOP.
When we took a cab, I didn't see the name of the hotel on the front of the buildling where he stopped and I freaked out. Take a look at the picture of the hotel before going.
The staff was nice and courteous. Our room wasn't ready (arrived at 1030) but we left our bags and walked around town. They did offer us a room on the first floor as an alternative. The lobby has free WIFI. But there are people smoking. As is most of Macau anyway.
Our room was on the 5th (top) floor with a nice view. We asked for a non smoking room, and it was. Except it was near the elevators, and people smoke near the elevators and you can smell it in the morning.
The room itself wasn't as clean as I would have liked. The carpets were dirty (black marks), and I was afriad to touch the floor with my bare feet. They provide cheapo paper slippers on the bedside table.
The bed was springy. Not the best quality, but decent.
Air flow in the room was good, with a thermostat, but the windows don't open. In the winter (Jan) we were quite cold. They have another blanket.
110V outlets are available.
The bar/water was very affordable. It was nice to get bottled water at $4.50MOP. They have a kettle, but it was disgusting.
The nightclub downstairs is very sleazy. Its the type you can pick and choose your girls. One night I had to sleep with ear plugs. The 2nd night it didn't bother me.
Overall, good location, decent service, decent cleaniness. You get what you pay for, and a very good alternative to the pricey chain hotels.
