We walked through Senado Square a couple times during the recent Chinese New Year festivities. The area was decorated with red signage, traditional CNY displays and numerous hanging red and gold lantern-type decor. Mixed with the waving black and white cobbled ground, this was a beautiful sight. Well worth seeing during the CNY celebration period.
In the area of Senado Square, there are good number of fellow members of the UNESCO World Heritage collection that makes up the Historic Centre of Macau. Across the street is the Leal Senado building and Sam Kai Vui Kun Temple. On the square itself you will find the Holy House of Mercy, while the Cathedral and Cathedral Square are just behind this last attraction. Walking through Senado square, you enter Domingo Square where you find the famous St. Dominic's Church, off a nearby side street you will find one of my favorites, Lou Kau Mansion. Then just walk up the small side streets past St. Dominic's and you will soon approach the iconic Ruins of St. Paul.
This area of Macau is jammed packed with attractions and members of the World Heritage collection. Most touring of this area starts right at Senado Square, just off Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro. Its one of the most important areas in Macau and the best place to start your touring of the Historic Centre of Macu, especially if you are on limited time in Macau.
