Living in HK, the Pousada de Sao Tiago is one of my favourite Macau weekend getaways. Obviously not everyone's cup of tea judging from some of the reviews and, wanting to try to give some balance to the comments, the main reason why I thought it worth writing a review. If you are looking for a 200 room 5 or 6 star casino style hotel the Pousad is definitely not for you. It is a small luxury boutique hotel built in a 15th century fort on Barra Point in Macau. The setting is very romantic and the suites are large and have been very well renovated recently. The harbour view suites are particularly good, looking over the Pearl River. One of the reviewers said it was out of the way. Depends where you want to be. It is a 10 min taxi ride from the cobbled old centre of town and if that is where you want to be there are closer options, like the Lisboa for example. However, the Pousada is in a quiet and very old part of town, with some famous old restaurants in the nearby streets (Lorca for example, which is past past A-Ma Temple). There is also a beautiful old church on Barra Hill which makes for a good stoll and A-Ma Temple, which is just around the corner, is one of the oldest and most famous temples in Macau. All in all, it is one of the most unique places to stay in Macau and for those looking for something a bit different at the high end of the market I would definitely recommend it. The service is good too, on average, though they do need to do something about one of their front line staff, Water. She doesn't speak very good English or Cantonese, which must be a drawback given a fair amount of their guests probably come from the region. And she has a "can't do" attitude which you don't expect in a place of this calibre. Otherwise, the staff were very friendly and helpful and we had a great stay.
