We stayed at the Holiday Inn from 19-25 May and then again for 1 night on 31 May 2009.
Despite having a booking for 2 rooms and being a member of the IHG Priority Club we were not given upgrades to the renovated rooms. Reading the other reviews posted I can only surmise that upgrades are given arbitrarily.
THE GOOD
The Hotel's location is fantastic.
It is within 5-10 minutes walking distance to many of the large and incredibly glitzy casinos such as the Grand Lisboa, Wynn, Starworld and Lisboa - thereby allowing easy access to all the restaurants and free entertainment that these establishments have to offer. We often jumped on any free shuttle bus to any of these casinos if ever we missed the Holiday Inn shuttle - because it was such an easy walk from these hotels back to the Holiday Inn.
The hotel is surrounded by a plethora of local restaurants offerring cheap and delicious food. We loved eating at Charming Gourmet across the road because the food was sensational and the restaurant clean and spacious, but beware of the mosquitoes which ravaged my husband's legs on our 1st dinner there. Also there is a 7-11 less than 20m down the street and 3 grocery stores (the largest being Royal Supermarket) within a 5 minute walk.
Also within a 10 minute walk is the Senado Square and all the fantastic shopping and eating that it has to offer; as well as the New Yaohan Department Store.
We were allocated rooms on Level 19 which was a non-smoking floor. Whilst unrenovated and definitely tired, the rooms were clean and comfortable and accommodated 2 adults and 2 children in 2 double beds well enough.
The fitness centre has an indoor pool, cold and hot spa as well as a very well equipped and underused gym. The bathrooms in the fitness centre were spotlessly maintained and we preferred to shower there rather than our room!
The Frascati Restaurant offerred themed dinner buffets and a pretty good breakfast buffet but was considerably more expensive than eating out.
The bus stop is 20 metres down the street which makes for cheap and easy travel around Macau. Taxis are at the front of the hotel and are also a cheap mode of transport.
The Holiday Inn is predominantly staffed by friendly Filipinos who are naturally warm and welcoming and made our stay so enjoyable. The concierge staff all remembered us when we returned after a week in Hong Kong and seemed genuinely pleased to see us again. Their attention to our needs was impressive and very helpful especially since we were travelling with children.
THE NOT SO GOOD
The Hotel is tired and drab and there is no wonder it is undergoing a complete renovation.
When we arrived the 22nd floor was being renovated and although management try to keep the disruptions and noise to a minimum, all the hammering and drilling does get irritating. Of course we were out for most of the day but that is not the point - we paid money for a comfortable hotel room and should be entitled to enjoy and relax.
The hotel has a Chinese Restaurant but although it is called Holiday Inn Chinese Restaurant it is a tenant of the property and thus is not affiliated with the Hotel, meaning that we couldn't charge our meal to our room and also that the level of service and hospitality was not up to Holiday Inn standard.
Smoking is permitted in all the public areas of the Hotel (Lobby, Lift wells, Bar etc) and so it is always smokey and smelly. We could smell smoke even on our non-smoking floor because people would smoke while waiting for the lifts.
Overall I would recommend the Holiday Inn for it's fantastic location in Macau and also for the friendliness of their Filipino concierge staff. We would stay at this Hotel again and hopefully when all renovations are completed. For the price we paid (HK600 per night) it was definitely great value for money.
