“Great setting, great African chicken”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2013

Unfortunately, few will happen upon this charming restaurant which seems hidden from the public, tucked away in the back corner of the beautiful Albergue da Santa Casa da Misericórdia Square in the St. Lazarus district. However, if you do find this place, you'll be very pleased that you did!

We recently dined here for lunch, arriving at 12.30pm and being seated immediately. We were able to dine at one of their outdoor tables, which is situated in front of two big and beautiful leafy trees that make for a relaxed and lovely atmosphere for outdoor dining. They have nice indoor dining as well on the second floor of the restaurant.

We shared a main dish of African Chicken (168 MOP) which was simply five star. The meat was well marinated and coated well with spices, making a very flavorful version of the Macanese classic dish. A small cup of additional sauce was provided as well as two pieces of potato prepared similarly to the African chicken. A small serving of salad rounded off this plate, which was overall thoroughly enjoyed. This was one of the very best African Chicken dishes we have tried in Macau (rating 5 of 5) and a specific reason to return to this restaurant.

We did find the appetizers to be poor to average: the olives (28 MOP) were simple, while the Portuguese cheese plate (108 MOP) was a meager portion though tasted okay (rating 3 of 5). At the time of our visit wine choices were limited although the bottle of red wine we ordered was fine.

Still, the lovely setting and the wonderful African Chicken in Albergue 1601 will have us coming back to this restaurant sooner than later. It would probably be best to make reservations for dinner.

“Romantic Venue -”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2013

Lovely location off the beaten path. Very comfortable outdoor seating is available on a small courtyard, or indoor seating in an old home.
Food is Portugese/Mediterranean (primarily) that is well presented. There are several good dining options available in Macau, and this one remains popular. Get reservations....I had to wait until 9:30 (on a Thursday) and couldn't get a reservation the previous month (also on a weeknight).
Great place for a leisurely dinner when the weather cooperates....

“Couldn't recommend it highly enough”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 23, 2012 via mobile

As what the previous reviews stated, the restaurant or the place itself is a hidden gem. I have been to Macau for quite a few times but have never been to that historical district before. The restaurant, set in a Portuguese historical building, was a kind of adaptive reuse of heritage. Hidden in one of the buildings of the previous old ladies home, the restaurant is still a well-kept secret and is able to maintain its tranquility so fat. Alfresco dining is available which is an ideal to spend a relaxing afternoon in nice weather. With the entwined camphor trees, the place is simply beautiful!

Portuguese dishes are served. Reasonably priced, not cheap though. They are of great quality and the Portuguese seafood rice and cod fish balls are the best I have ever had. Good service with cheerful attendants. However, they may ignore phone calls at busy hours and it makes reservation by phone a nightmare.

There is a small art gallery just opposite to the restaurant, worth visiting. A leisure stroll to the neighborhood of st Lazarus ends this dining experience perfectly.

“Hidden gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2012 via mobile

Set in old portuguese building, this place looks really rustic and charming..it got character. It has outdoor or some kind of courtyard, something that not many places in macao has it. I was delighted when I saw this..You can enjoy brunch or dinner at courtyard enjoy the breeze or indoor. They also have a bar, lounge area for chill out.. We Went there once and tried the food during lunch hours.., it was pretty good.
We ordered stuffed squid, turned out to be very tasty, main course seafood rice (great portion), honey grilled pork (yummy). The food served pretty quickly and staffs were friendly too. Definitely, coming back again!

“Beautiful setting, nice staff and great food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2012

What more can you ask for, this is located in a nice quiet plaza and looks to have been an old home that was converted. The food was great, we had fish, chicken, pork everything was delicious. The girls that waited on us were very sweet and attentive. Good bread and sangria, overall a very good meal at good price.
