“A piece of Portugal in Asia”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2011

You are wandering around Taipa after a more or less successful visit to a nearby Casino. Where is this country Portuguese past?, you wonder.

In a narrow alley, near Hotel Taipa Best Western and past a post office box lies this little gem. Two gems actually, this restaurant is split in two but shares one kitchen.

All the local cod and stew specialties of Portugal with an array of wines from the Douro region and others. This restaurant is patronized by businessmen, lovebirds as well as tourists in the know.

Not cheap but one of the best meals I had in Asia. Only negative was the disinterested staff (a general problem in Macau/Macao). The boss, however, is a delight. He is always happy to make recommendations as to food and wine. This place is busy so reserve a table if you can. The telephone number does not show up on this Trip Advisor site: 853-28827571 or 28825811

“Simple, authentic and with charming simplicity”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2010

O Manel is an experience. We occasionally even go to Macao (from Hong Kong) only to have dinner there. It's nothing fancy, rather quite rustic, yet has an honesty and integrity that is worth the trip. I think this goes for old Macao in general, although it's hardly found at the casinos.

Manuel runs his restaurant with passion and slightly reminds you of "the soup Nazi" from Seinfeldt - if you don't like it he'll most likely ask you to leave. There is always a list of daily specials which are usually good deals that are worth to go for. Bacalhau, rabbit, different kinds of seafood, steaks, grilled sardines - I've hardly ever been disappointed. Don't miss the cheese - there is a melted Portuguese cheese that is absolutely brilliant. The baked apple dessert is also famous among those who like sweet things - I usually settle for the port which is served by putting a bottle and a handful of glasses on the table.

The interior is basic, but homely. Football is the sport and Sporting is the team - noone will be fooled by that. We usually try to get a table in the older, left part of the restaurant next to the kitchen, but there is no big difference. Since the restaurant is small and sometimes closed for various reasons, there is always a point in giving them a call in advance and making a reservation.
