Owner description: The Curraghs Wildlife Park is on the Ballaugh Curragh which is a site of special scientific interest and designated as an internationally recognised wetland habitat of importance (Ramsar site). With nearly 100 different species set in over 30 acres of open walk through exhibits and a beautiful tranquil setting this is a wildlife Park with a difference. The Park is s laid out in geographic regions; African Bush, Asian Swamp, European Marsh, Amazon forest, American Trail, Outback and the Pampas. In the popular children's adventure play ground area you will find the Meerkats and Prairie dogs. The Orchard line miniature railway is one of the longest miniature railway line in the British Isles and is loved by all ages, it runs every Sunday as well as other holiday days. With the Giant Bouncy Jumping Pillow and Mni-diggers this is the premier all day attraction on the Isle of Man. For rainy days there is an indoor soft play area to keep the kids entertained.Summer 2014 will see the adition of an exciting new play area called 'Enchanted Wood'. The restaurant is open every day and serves everything from snacks, home baking and ice creams to sit down meals. The nature trail is an excellent easily accessible way to see the Curragh (Manx willow bog) and all the diverse indigenous species it supports. You can spend a whole day here and just relax but even if you only have a couple of hours it's still worth the visit. We are open every day from 10am-6pm from Easter until the end of October, in the winter we are open weekends and school holidays. We are a BIAZA and EAZA member attraction.

“A good day out, could be better maintained.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2014

I went to the Wild Life Park today with my friends for a different day out. Our first impressions were that the park looked poorly maintained and ill kept. The water in the penguin enclosure looked extremely dirty. As we walked around we saw very few animals.. maybe they were keeping themselves out of the sun. The animals we did see were mainly singular e.g. the tapir. This has been similar to previous visits. Despite this, the meerkats, prairie dogs, bats, monkeys and many more were all excellent enclosures. There is also plenty of fun things for children to do e.g. the bouncy pillow, diggers, train and park. The cafe is also very good. Overall a good day out but could be better maintained.

Thanks for writing about your experience, and we are glad you enjoyed the day. The penguin pool does fluctuate in clarity at times, when the weather is sunny it can cause excess algae bloom (this does not adversely affect the penguins but isn’t ideal for visitors) which we do get on top of after a few days so usually the penguin pool is reasonably clear. We are planning at the moment to give the penguin enclosure a re-vamp and extension which should be complete by the end of the year.

The Tapir has indeed been on his own for a while since his old companion passed away. As a BIAZA zoo we co-ordinate globally for breeding many species, the studbook keeper has identified a mate in France and the move is due to happen imminently. With the rain and sun in early June the grass and vegetation has come up very quickly but we are on top of the strimming and grass cutting (for the moment). We value our visitor’s feedback; please feel free to ask any members of staff questions on your visit we are happy to answer questions. We have quite a lot of animal moves to do this year, we have just received a new Red Panda and are also due to bring in another fishing cat and squirrel monkey. Local support is really important to us; to enable us to make even more improvements.

“A great day out for all the family.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2014

On Friday I went to the Wildlife Park for my little boys birthday outing and it's been a couple of years since I've been. I personally think it has improved so much. The café is great, especially the snack box they offer the children which is £4.95 for a sandwich of your choice, fruit, drink, bag of crisps and ice cream! What is particularly good about the ice cream is that its a voucher inside, so you don't have to have it there and then but can come back later. Not only that, but it's Davisons! The outdoor play areas and especially the train is fabulous. As for the wildlife that too was quite impressive since it is a Trust and we can't expect as much as the likes of Chester Zoo as it is it what it claims to be and centres around wildlife, but still had a wonderful time. I really hope they make a lot of money during the summer to fund all the bits they need updating and renovating that can take place during winter when it's not so busy. Apparently they were on the radio today and they're going to do up the park next to the café as well. It's going to attract so many visitors. Once I pass my driving test, I will buy a yearly membership so I can go when I want. It's a great asset to the island and brings people out in to the countryside to admire just what a beautiful island we have. I think people concentrate far too much on what we don't have, and forget to be grateful of our picturesque surroundings and what Angela Byrne and her Tourism team are really trying to build on (well done).

We are really glad you enjoyed your day on Friday. Good Friday was certainly one of the busiest days I’ve seen the park since I arrived here a couple of years ago!

On behalf of the café which is run by a hard working husband and wife team, can I just say they will be pleased with your comments as customer feedback is really important to them, and it is nice for them to know when they get it right.

You make some good points, although very few Zoos and Wildlife Parks actually make money, at best most can achieve covering running costs. The Curraghs Wildlife Park can continue to improve; investing in animal enclosures and facilities if it is well supported by locals and we really value your support. We do indeed have a new play area planned for summer as well as new animal exhibits and improved exhibits over the next few years.

We wish you luck with your driving test and hope you do indeed become a member, as it is the best value and most flexible way for locals to enjoy the Park whenever they wish and helps the Park achieve its goals. The staff and volunteers at the Park also really appreciate when people notice the improvements they have worked hard and continue to work hard to achieve.
Hope to see you soon!

“Not only for Children - took Nephew now in is 30's”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2014

This was on our list of things to do in IOM, - Nephew wanted to visit especially to see the "red panda's" - and we did see them, they are quite timid, but due to the lovely afternoon sunshine, they came out and we viewed and took many photographs- lovely creatures. The park also has a lot of interesting animals, birds and we must have spent at least 2.1/2 - 3 hours visiting the various different enclosures - Amazon Rainforest, African Bush, Australian Outback- South American Pampas -nice cafe- views onto the small lake- and managed to take some good pictures of peacocks. Park is expertly kept, animals look happy and content.
Would recommend this to any "animal lovers", not only for Children- Adults will enjoy and make a lovely afternoon/day out- good service by buses also, which stop outside.
Good day thanks Uncle & Nephew. Good value for money.

We are glad you enjoyed your visit and thank you for writing about it. You make a very good point that that the animal attractions are indeed substantial and value for money. The play features are just a bonus for families with younger children.

We have been developing recently and the Park does continue to evolve and we have new enclosures and species planned so we hope to see you again one day if you return to the Isle of Man!

Thanks for visiting us, especially in January, the weather has been a bit hit and miss recently! On the plus side with less leaves on the trees some animals are more visible, like the Red pandas. Hopefully see you again the next time you are on the island, and thank you for writting a review, we do love to hear what our visitors think.
