“Has the WOW Factor!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2014

Just walking through the doors to this excellent hotel you can't fail to be impressed. The facilities, restaurants and pools and grounds were excellent and the whole area has a relaxing feel. Puerto Mogan was a lovely resort without all the time share salesmen we found in nearby Puerto Rico. Can recommend a trip on the Yellow Submarine too very interesting

Room Tip: Get a room on the highest floor for the best views and no overhead noise of footsteps

Stayed half board for 11 nights in a junior suite in January. Our suite was on the ground floor and had a very nice lawn area. However as pointed out by one reviewer a few of the ground suite lawns are so shaded that their lawn does not look attractive and astroturf would be more suitable. Overall it is excellent with very good and friendly staff. There are two large pools and the loungers have good cushions and the parasols work well. The pool areas are very attractive and the gardens are well maintained and very attractive. The suite was a good size and fine. The food is exceptional with a big selection and good quality. The evening buffet was a little crowded if you went in at the start. We generally waited 40 mins and there was still the full range available. You always had the same table for dinner. Cost of drinks seemed typical of a good hotel. Evening entertainment was varied ( acrobats, magician dancers etc ). The large and attractive entrance hall is the main lounge area which works fine. A few minutes walk to the very attractive fishing village and beach. The junior suites are a pleasant 4 mins walk from the reception. Breakfast buffet for the suites is in the cafe which is very close.
The majority of the guests are either German or Scandinavian. We look forward to returning.

Whilst the hotel may be a little tired around the edges and the pool is too cold for very young children, you cannot fault the friendliness of the staff, excellent location, quality of food provided (based on how many people they are cooking for every sitting), and overall facilities. As a family, going away with grandparents, we always have a great time.

My wife and I have just returned after a two week stay at the Cordial Mogan Playa. The hotel was chosen for our New Year break based the recommendations of friends who had stayed and the large number of excellent and very good reviews on Trip Adviser. We were not disappointed.

From the moment we arrived the quality of the hotel was evident. The reception staff were friendly and most helpful. The reception area was also bright and airy and spotlessly clean. When we had a small problem soon after our arrival with the room we had been allocated, the staff were extremely accommodating in help us find an alternative that met our requirements almost immediately.

All of the other amenities, such as the two pool areas, were well maintained and spotlessly clean. The same goes for the extensive gardens that I am sure are beautiful anytime of the year.

As for our accommodation, we had chosen a room as opposed to a junior suite. Well laid out, this was more than adequate for our needs. Whilst the junior suite would have had a separate lounge area, we found that the time we spent in the room would not have justified the extra cost.

The buffet restaurant was also excellent with a wide range of high quality dishes on offer changing daily. The visit to the a la carte restaurant, where we both had the taster menu, was also very memorably.

The only slightly downside was the evening entertainment. This did not always match the quality of the other facilities and was not always to our taste. However, it was explained that this was tailored at that time of the year for older guests most of which like to retire early. I have to say that these formed the majority during the time of our stay.

As for Mogan itself, the Marina and Old Harbour area were ideal to wander round as a relief from lazing in the sun, which we were able to do most of the time. Some nice shops and lots of nice bars and restaurants.

Would we go again. Oh yes.

Two words of advice.

1. For your transfer to the hotel, we suggest booking and paying separately for a taxi to the resort as opposed the coach that is normally part the package. This takes on average 40 minutes as the 4 hours that was spent on the coach by some of our fellow guests.

2. If you are thinking of taking the boat ride to Puerto Rico, you need to be aware it is a high density resort with lots of poor quality shops with pushy salesmen selling poor quality wares and supposedly premium goods at prices making it difficult to believe they are the genuine article. The resort is also overrun by information booths that are fronts for salesmen offering inducements as a basis for tempting people to buy time share apartments.

The good - We had a 2nd floor room in Guaydil block, rooms 7001-7327. The room had a south facing balcony overlooking the gardens and one of the swimming pools. The room was a good size with 2 comfortable beds, large bathroom, adequate clothes storage and good lighting. The gardens and grounds are beautifully laid out and so extensive that oudoors the place never feels crowded. We never had any problem finding a space in the underground car park. The staff are helpful and friendly. The buffets offer a huge choice and on the whole the food is excellent.
The bad - our bedroom was quite hot at night despite opening the balcony door in the evening and despite sleeping under just a sheet and one thin blanket. Hotel informs us there is no air conditioning this time of the year only heating! Bathroom/toilet area has no extractor fan or opening window. We only went into the swimming pool once it was too cold. Breakfast buffet gets very busy after about 8.30 am. Evening buffet is fine if all you want is to be very well fed but a fine dinining experience it is not! The buffet is quite hectic and made worse by some adults, (you can forgive children), who think that the best way to get from one serving area to another is to zig-zag between tables of other diners rather than use the designated walkways as much as possible. We only used the evening buffet 3 times, twice paying extra and eating at the in house Los Guayares restaurant, and twice down by the marina. For quite an expensive hotel the room safes should be included rather than costing £15 per week extra.
We really liked Puerto Mogan and will come back. I can see the attractions of this hotel for a family but next year, as a couple, we will probably choose the greater flexibility of an apartment.

Room Tip: Definitely go for a room with a south facing balcony, 1st floor or higher

This was third winter vacation at Cordial Mogan Playa for my wife and me. The high standard has been maintained. Excellent facilities, great staff always willing to help and a great place to stay for a relaxing holiday. It is always difficult to resist the excellent food! We don't normally return to the same vacation spot but this is the one exception!

Room Tip: Ask for a west or south facing room if you want sun on your balcony.

We have now stayed twice at this hotel - and we enjoy the hotel and its' surroundings as well: the mountains, the village, the beach and the atmosphere in general. The standard is quite good for a hotel offering all inclusive and the Mini Club for children was second to none with a very skilled and dedicated staff and with a lot of options for the kids during the day.

However, I think that the hotel management should consider three things carefully:

1) Since last year the sales efforts towards the guests seems to have increased a lot - now guests are approached much more than previously by sales persons wanting to sell cosmetics or treatments, photos or wanting participation in sports activities on the site. One day we were approached five times without showing any desire to seek contact - we just wanted our privacy like the other guests - and especially the photographers and the sports activitiy people were way too long to understand that we were not interested. It is not pleasant to have to be a bit unpolite to get rid of people - but we were there only for relaxing and enjoying ourselves. Sometimes during the week I felt that we were walking on a market place in Tunesia or Morocco with all those sales approches.

2) The food could especially at lunch be improved - but also in the evenings. If the food at lunch (we had Full Board Plus) were improved (recipies etc.), I am convinced that many more guests would choose this option. I suggest that the management force themselves to eat there every day for a week - then you would see changes coming up...!! Having said that, I must state that the lunch staff are wonderful! At the evening buffet there is a very fine selection and many options/choices - but the cooks are so careful not to use spices in their effort to cook dishes, they feel anyone can eat, that it all in the end (after a week) becomes very ordinary and not longer a pleasure. When being a 4 star plus hotel, I think that the food should be more delicious and inventive - and not so ordinary.

3) Pool 2 was quite cold. Two extra degrees would be wonderful.
