We stayed in the Cordial Mogan Playa over a year ago now but i still feel the need to write a review. We are a family of 4 with 2 teenage daughters who were 11 and 13 at the time of holiday. We arrived at the hotel at around 2am in the morning which was tiring but the hotel staff tried to work quickly to get us to our rooms, we recieved a voucher for the meal we had missed that evening so we could have gone down in the night at any time to get some food! I must say that the hotel reception/foyer was beautiful and very well designed. A very good first impression for any guest. There was a porter to take us to ours rooms and carry our suitcases for us.
Rooms: The rooms were nice but not amazing. They were a 4 star standard but not brilliantly special, the maids were there every day and always replacing towels (tip: dont take too many towels, there is plenty in the hotel! saves space in the suitcase!) Luckily our rooms were next to each other so no hassle of being away from the girls. The beds were reasonably comfy and we always got a good nights sleep.
Pools: The pools were brilliant, the first morning we were there my girls couldnt wait to jump in and were moaning the whole time we went for a walk. There were 2 main ones at each end of the complex, we tended to stay at one for the fortnight. They were exactly the same but 1 seems to have more families with younger children and the other (the one we were around) had older couples. The children said they could be a bit cold sometimes but that was fine as it was around 35˚ each day. The only problem with the pools is that around them, there was tiles which were ok but could get extremely hot, my daughter ended up buring her foot one time but when there wasnt tiles there was tiny tiny stones which were painful when trying to walk to the pool but could eaily be solved with wearing flip flops and leaving them on the edge. It said somewhere that inflatables werent allowed in the pool but plenty of children were using them and my girls and friend bought an inflatable crocodile which amused them for hours (tip: if with children BUY AN INFLATABLE, they will love it)
Food: We were on a half-board basis which suited us fine. The breakfast was very nice but was the same everyday. You might struggle if you have fussy children like mine, one of my daughters only ate these doughnut things called 'fritters' which were very nice but didnt fill her up but she didnt like anything else'. The dinner was always at a 5* standard and was never cold. They seemed to change it every 3 - 5 days, there was so much variety my girls always found something to eat. On the last day our dinner wasnt included so we had to go into the town to find something, there was plenty of resturants and many english ones too. All of a good standard.
Entertainment: The entertainment was extremely good (according to the children), there was both adult and children activites in the day. The kids club states that its only for 4-12 but my 13 year-old went in every day and had fun with the little-ones. They both made endless amount of friends who they saw every day in the pool. In the brochure it said 'teen activity programme' when we asked at reception about this, they said there was no such thing. This was a bit of a let down but the kids club made up for it, the staff in there were very good and always kept the kids occupied. They had the mini-disco which was always great fun with my children and their friends going every night. In the kids club they sometimes had mini competitions of bowling etc and at the mini disco they wouldnt always present the winners with special certificates. The other evening entertainment was always brilliant and was different everynight. They included all languages and said hello to every country which made my children scream when they said 'Hello England!' they ended up making a flag to hold up!! They had alot of variety for the shows including, parrot show, magic show (including huge snakes!!), dancing, quiz nights, bingo, animation team putting on special shows e.g. Grease. Everyone always commented on how good the shows were and that they wished they could do it again.
There were also tennis courts and a giant chess board but we never got round to using them. There was also a bowling alley which we did use but only once as you had to pay a small charge and we thought you dont go on holiday to play bowling every day.
Service: The animation team were always excellent with both adults and children. The only let down were the staff at the main desk, they could sometimes be a little rude and favoured the Spainish which was extremely annoying. There would be a small queue and they would know you were english and then look straight through you and talk to the person behind you because they were spanish, we came across this a few times and thought about making a complaint but seeing as we were english they probably wouldnt have listened. Other than that everyone else was brilliant especially the chef at dinner, he would always have a chat when 'choosing your meat' and let you choose whichever egg or slice of bacon you wanted.
Location: We thought that the hotel was perfectly located with a small supermarket just next to the hotel which we used everyday. This was very handy and seeing as it was right next door you didnt need to get changed, my daughters sometimes just went in a bikini 1. because of the heat and 2. because they didnt see the need to get changed just for 10 minutes. The hotel was around a 10 minute walk to the harbour but well worth it, you didnt need to go there often though, we never went to the beach as the sea was too cold and the pools were perfectly fine anyway. I MUST reccoment you go to the market on the friday. It was brilliant, tourists from all over the country came to it, it could get busy but it was worth it, plenty of stalls all over puerto mogan and the perfect place for buying special gifts or souveniers.
Other: We reccomend you hire a car as there is plenty to see and visit, Palmitos Park was a good visit and having the picture with 7 parrots was a highlight. We also tried to go on a camel ride in Maspalomas but we couldnt find the camels! We drove around for about 15 minutes but still couldnt find them anywhere, we followed all the signs but still wasnt anywhere to be seen so we reccomend you ask before hand where to go.
Also the sunbeds were very comfortable with the blue cushions and never a sore back from those plastic white ones. You didnt need to rush in the morning although we put our towels on the sunbeds we wanted on the way down to breakfast (so around 8.30-9.00) and we were fine.
The hotel is also perfectly safe and no-one could take your key as you are allowed to take them out the hotel with you. Its also a swipe card which you slot in the door as so for extra security. There is also a door at the far end of the complex which can only be entered with this card.
All in all a brilliant holiday which made my children devastated to go home and one ended up crying when we got back! We will be returning one year soon!
