“On a Given Day ... The Best Place in the Caribbean”
We love El Combate Beach in Cabo Rojo. Two miles of perfect sand, good swimming, great walking, spectacular views, and even free parking. On weekdays, that is. It's another story on weekends, still fun, but only if you define "fun" as being non-stop jet skis, junk food, and swimmers bobbing up and down with their drink holders. Not my definition!
Annie's Place holds the commanding spot at the entrance to El Combate it's an open air affair with picnic style tables and a polished bar, and views to die-for, especially at sunset. It's open 7 days a week, starting at 11:30 am on weekdays and 9:30 am on weekends.( Annie must be a glutton for punishment.)
Restaurants in the Caribbean with great, beachy locations can usually be counted on to have lousy, over-priced food, irregular service, and funky bathrooms. For those reasons we've not eaten at Annie's, but just gone there for the occasional beer.
What a mistake! Our lunch there recently came as close to perfection as possible. Yes, the bathrooms are a little funky, but the food was the best we've had in Puerto Rico. Fresh seafood, tastily prepared, and served with nice little flourishes of style. My fish fillet with traditional tomato-based sauce came on an oversize platter accented with graceful arcs of balsamic vinegar, a nice touch that showed that someone in the kitchen cares. A shrimp mafongo was generously proportioned and made with local shrimp.
Serving us was Zulimy, Annie's sister, who was laid-back, but friendly, and responded positively to every question and request.
With a backdrop of the azure sea and white sand on a perfect day, we would have been satisfied with average food. To top this all off with an unexpectedly great dining experience put Annie's over the top. (Our best advice: go on a week day. Leave the weekends for the rest of the world.)
