“Great repite during Ramadan”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2012

We arrived on Gili Trawangan tired of 2 days of travel from Japan and originally stayed at another very tired hotel a little further down the beach. With the sounds of Ramadan filling our room every night at 3 am and 5 am, and being filtered in with wild roosters once the calls to prayer had finished, we were just about going crazy. We arrived at Villa Unggul sleep deprived and grateful for the beautiful rooms, warm shower water, and cool marble floors. Not to mention the beautiful salt-water pool out front, and easy access to the beach with beach chairs for hotel guests. Breakfast was also delicious, I opted for the banana pancakes every morning which were accompanied by a croissant and some fresh fruit. The staff were gracious and welcoming, the room was always beautiful cleaned, the ceilings and thatched roofs in the rooms is beautiful, and I would overall recommend this hotel to others looking for something slightly higher end, (albeit quite pricey at $100 a night for Gili T.) I can't say I regret spending any of the money we did here as we were so pleased and impressed with our stay. I would definitely stay again.

I know it's high season, but 100 euro per night is too much for a small bathroom whit the shower over the toilet. A nicer and bigger room was 150 so we choose to stay in the cheaper one. Ask for a written quote if you decide to stay, they pretend you haven't understood the price and overcharge you when checking out!

Anyway, the hotel is nice and breakfast is good. We never used the the swimming pool, since the hotel has some seabeds just across the road. Good snorkeling. Nice and helpful staff.

We stumbled upon villa Unggul and ended up staying 10 nights! A spacious room tastefully decorated with a large indoor bathroom (yay), good air con, not so great tv reception (but who cares when you are on Gili T), average wifi and overall clean compared to other places we stayed on the island. The breakfast was included which was very good and the staff also efficient and friendly. Highly recommended...

I've stayed here twice. The first time (April 2011) was brilliant, Had an awesome pool. Nice big beds/bedrooms/bathroom. Very quiet. Away from the hustle and bustle yet close enough to walk down there. Do reccommend hiring bikes though. Second time (October 2011) Pool was filthy which was a shame, although it cleared up towards the end of our stay. Would stay again.

We ended up staying at Villa Unggul by accident after a double-booking problem at Bale Sampan. The Bale Sampan owners very kindly booked us at Villa Unggul, which would otherwise have been somewhat beyond our budget. However, when we return to Gili Trawangan in the future we will stretch our budget to stay here again.

It is a shame that when I tried to get Villa Unggul listed on TripAdvisor straight after our holiday, the listing was refused, because now I can't remember all of the details of the accommodation. I shall, however, try my best.

Location: About 10-15 minutes' walk north of the busiest part of the island, so within easy reach of a huge choice of restaurants but out of earshot of the parties. About 10-15 minutes' walk from the various bars and restaurants on the north coast from which the sunset can be enjoyed. Snorkelling directly in front of the hotel was good.

Room: It may have been Room 1 - at the front of the property. Rooms are large with a spacious bathroom including good shower. Very simply furnished. Large bed, small fridge that can be used for your own drinks. Off the bathroom is a small garden area that allows light to come in while maintaining privacy. The room was serviced early each day - staff noticed when we were out for a walk or at breakfast and took care of it then. Some sort of insecticide was used and there were a couple of dead cockroaches around in the mornings - to be expected in the climate I think.

Meals: We loved having breakfast on the beach in front of the hotel. Meals could also be taken in the open restaurant area near the pool. We found the couple of lunches and dinners we ate here very good. Breakfast was lovely with a choice of bacon and eggs, pancakes or nasi or mee goreng; fruit; fruit juice; tea or coffee; toast or "croissants" (not like in France!).

Pool and beach: Villa Unggul has a number of loungers with umbrellas on the beach, where we spent every morning, and more around the pool, where we usually retreated in the afternoon when there was a breeze. The pool is one of the few large pools we noticed almost on the beachfront, with a nice view. It has a pool bar that wasn't operational when we were there (no loss in my opinion).

Staff and service: This was one of the highlights. The staff were unfailingly helpful, friendly, polite and quick to predict what we might need. They seemed really genuine in their desire to provide good service.

We loved Villa Unggul and would certainly recommend it for a relaxing holiday, especially for adults.

It's worth the hike past the ferry, out to this area of Gili T. Villa Unggul is quiet, with lush, well maintained grounds, a lovely pool, and lovely large villa rooms with a/c, indoor bathroom, fresh hot and cold running water (an unusual boon in the Gilis). Rent snorkel gear on your way, and you can literally walk right into some of the best snorkeling in the area, right off the Villa Unggul beach.
