We have just returned from a wonderful week at the Gili Eco Villas on Gili Trewangan Island. The staff are wonderful and so friendly. We were a large group of 17, and within a day they knew our names, and what villas we were staying in.
The food was good if you stuck to the local food, but it does pay to go out into the main part of the town for some meals, as the menu is limited if you are there for lunch and dinner (same menu for both).
The rooms were cleaned everyday and the two bedroom villas are in a great location, close to the beach, pool and open air restaurant.
If you are looking for a laid back holiday, where the toughest decision is to sit on the beach or by the pool, then this is the place to go!

Room Tip: One of the two bedroom villas would be my pick, but in fairness did not look at any of the other roo...

Just came back from a 7 night stay at Eco Villas. One of the best holidays ever, and we have had heaps in this region.

The place itself was gorgeous - beautiful, simple, stylish 2 bedroom cottage with open air living area including kitchen and 2 open to the sky bathrooms. We stayed in number 2 right in front of the pool which was perfect for us with 2 kids aged 5 and 9 being able to run across the grass to and from the pool as they pleased. The grounds are nicely spread out so you never feel like you are too close to any other guests and the gardens are a beautifully maintained rustic tropical beachside garden.

As nice as the actual villas are, it's the wonderful staff who make this place very special. From the minute we arrived we were made to feel like visiting family rather than paying guests. Within a day everyone knew all our names and we knew most of theirs. Nothing was too much trouble for anyone. The boys in the restaurant were great, really good service as well as being funny and patient with our kids, the gardeners, maintenance and cleaning staff were all very friendly and I must make special mention of Atun, the guest relations manager who organised special trips for us, bike's, gave lots of info about the reef, and was never far away making sure everything was running smoothly. We got the sense that everyone working there wanted to be there and took pride in the place.

The food at Eco Villas is really good. For such a small resort the menu was extensive and they always had whatever we ordered - not always the case in some of these smaller places. Huge variety, well done, special requests catered to (including cooking our caught fish one night). It does close up early though (last orders are at 9) so if you're looking for a bit more of a night out there are lots of other places around. The quietness of the place was actually perfect for us.

As for the island of Gili Trewangan, it was beautiful. Eco Villas are towards the northern end at the quieter part of the island which we loved. Even so there were a few other smaller resorts very close by you can walk to for a bit of variety for meals etc. The busy side of the island, town, is only a 5 - 10 min horse and cart ride away (or 10-15 min bike ride) and has lots of dive places, bars and places to eat. I have to say everywhere we ate on the island had pretty good food. The whole island only takes about 1 hour to walk around so nowhere is too far away!

Snorkling, swimming, fishing, surfing - it is all fab with different spots being good for different things. We swam with turtles, caught fish, snorkeled right out the front of the resort in what looked like an aquarium.

So def worth a look if you are looking for a small place that really does take the 'Eco' in it's name seriously, is on the quieter side of the island and has great service I would recommend Gili Eco Villas.

We stayed five days at fantastic Gili Eco Villas. Two days in the three bedroom villa and three days in two bedroom villa. We travelled with two children aged 5 and 9.

THE VILLAS are charming, have nice design and are build to make you feel relaxed.

THE STAFF is absolutley fantastic. Very good service, and you feel they from the bottom of their heart want you to have a good stay. Most of them defently have "the litle extra".

THE FOOD. We had all our meals at Gili in the restaurant at Gili Eco Villas. That is because the food was good, tasty and well presented. We didnt want to go anywhere else. And best of all, our kids loved it as well. Try the fahitas:) Ask to get the food at the beach, you will love it.

THE BEACH, well we loved it. Most of the time we had the beach for our self. We think the style at Gili Eco Villas beach area is the most charming at the Island. And probably many agreed with us. We could tell by all the people taking pictures of it.

THE AREA, is quiet, charming and you defently feel like you stay at a paradis Island. Nice snorkling area with turtles and fish.

When we visited Gili Eco Villas we had been travelling for about 140 days in south east Asia. We have visited many different places. Gili Travangan and our stay at Gili ECo Villas is one of the most charming places we have visited.

I spent one week at this fabulous establishment, and it is a place like no other that I have been to. I travel Asia for two months every year and I was intrigued by the notion of a place like this, with a sincere want to preserve nature by committing to recycling, allowing no plastic cans, running on solar power etc... ) Arriving at the Eco Villas it was immediately clear that this desire was heartfelt and true. A big thank you to the boss, Bagus, who took the time to explain the ideas behind the Eco Villas, as well as letting me in on future plans. The staff met me with open arms and treated me like a friend, and by the end of the week we had a fantastic jam-session on my balcony, surely one of the highlights of this incredible week.
In Thobing i got a friend for life. I have to apologize to the lovely Atun, I am not much of a dancer... ;) Every need I had was tended to by the incredible staff, twentyfour-seven.

Only a 10 minute bike ride from the main street, where Trawangans action is, one is able to enjoy the tranquility of solitude in what has to be the best Villa-option on the island.
A word on the food; Fantastic! (A little tip; Enjoy your food by the lovely pool, or better still, on the Villas own beautiful beach, tastefully decorated with driftwood) The lay-out for my upcoming days were surely presenting itself.
I have no difficulties recommending this extraordinary place to anyone. I definitely know where I will be staying if I visit this beautiful island again.

Room Tip: I stayed in Villa 6 which had a view of the entire property as well as the ocean. Very satisfied!

We both like the kind of peaceful place, full of privacy, natural, safe and away from the term resort or hotel. One of our choices in Gili Trawangan went to this place, although there are negative reviews about this place, we still want to try to stay here. We were greeted by white crystal clear water white sandy beach just right in front the villa. The friendly staff, large yard, and when we entered our villa one bedroom, it is very spacious and comfortable. The idea of eco-friendly villa was immediately felt. The building made from recycled teak wood polished in white limestone, very natural. Spacious porch, furnished with dining table, a wicker sofa sets, kitchen ware is fairly complete. When we entered the bedroom, a bed covered with beautiful drappery of mosquito net, very romantic. The open air bathroom was very much safe and private, wow .. we were very impressed because it is very spacious, clean and complete with very good lighting day and night. Restaurant floor was dirt and sand. Breakfast is quite good, but it is best at lunch and dinner, there's no meal time we missed. A very skillful chef, proving the reviews are right about the food. Moreover, dessert and snacks while relaxing on the beach: banana spring rolls, banana split. We did not try the swimming pool, for the beautiful white sand beach only steps away. Very peaceful in the low season. Snorkelling equipment is available at this villa and vary of choices, and by only walking into the ocean water, we can meet the beautiful coral reefs and colorful fish. Especially in the morning, we played at a low tide beach and found starfishes, sea snails, small colorful fish, crabs, etc. Very comfortable and natural. All activities can be arranged by the staff of Gili Eco. On a clear beautiful night, we circled the island on a horse cart. Thank you Mbak Atun, Pak Bagus, Geri and all the crew. We really had a great time there. We saw you guys were refurbishing or maybe renovating the villa we stayed, we will come back!

Room Tip: the front one bedroom villa has an open view to the street, but the villas in the back yard also loo...

We, seemingly like others, were taken in by the photos on the website. As those others have said, the photos are grossly inaccurate.

The "villas" are large, open-air shanties that have not been updated in at least 20 years (likely around the time they got the National Geographics in the rooms, all of which are from the mid-eighties). Paint is chipped and peeling, pillows are stained with unknown fluids, and there was a rather nasty spider living in our fan. The "complimentary breakfast" consists of going to fetch raw eggs from the main office, which can then be cooked in the run-down kitchen also dating from decades well-past. Even from the balcony of the two-story villas, the ocean is not really visible; this is probably a good thing, given that the beach (such as it is) is downright depressing.

As others have noted, the service was quite good. They helped us to arrange transport to this Hooverville-by-the-sea, seemed somewhat apologetic (though not very surprised) when we complained of the quality of the accommodations, and helped us arrange transport off the island for the following morning. This is not a place to speak of value; we readily would have paid more to leave that day than to stay the night, had not the last boat to Nusa Lembongan already departed.

In any case, AVOID!
