“Absolutely amazing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2010

We had an amazing time at Villa Julius, I have no complains at all. It is a bit expensive for being in Indonesia but it was definitely worth it!

Villa Julius was everything my wife and I were looking for during our honeymoon in Indonesia.

Located on the north section of the island, VIlla Julius is a peaceful oasis on a pristine section of beach with almost no other tourists. When we first arrived in The Gilis, we were disappointed to hear booming techno and see hordes of tourists mobbing the east section of Trawangan. Villa Julius was the exact opposite. This place is a real paradise for anyone looking for peace, quiet and the perfect romantic getaway.

Service was phenomenal from every member of the staff. The Swedish manager deserves extra credit for calling down to friends on the east part of the island to help us arrange activities. We were even bumped up to a superior room that was vacant and included a huge terrace overlooking the beach. The room was spacious and included large candles, gorgeous bed and mosquito net, beautiful stone bath tub, rain shower, electric safe, elegant lighting. It was everything we had hoped for and more.

Every morning we woke up to order a delicious breakfast (don't miss out on the blueberry smoothies), which was served anywhere — by the pool, in our room and even on the beach — and included in the price of the room.

Only the most high-end places on Trawangan have fresh water (imported from Lombok) for bathing (the others use saltwater), and Julius is among the places with fresh water but at a more affordable price. The bathroom and shower were gorgeous. Everything about the room was fabulous as well — though, as another reviewer noted, the air conditioner was not working (we were notified of this before we booked our room, and the air conditioner was unnecessary anyway.)

Villa Julius is the very last place hotel as you walk north around the island, and it is also the most secluded. Disappointed with our first hotel, my second morning on Trawangan was spent visiting every hotel my wife and I might want to stay at. I visited more than ten. All of the places I liked were on the north end of the island, but Julius left all these behind. If you are staying on Trawangan and looking for serenity or a romantic escape, there is no better choice than Villa Julius.

I came to Gili Trawangan with my girlfriend, but without any hotel bookings. After 3 nights at a mediocre bungalow place called Gili View at the north east side of the island we discovered Villa Julius. After 3 nights at a sandy, dusty and not so well run hotel, it was a total relief to discover the romantic perfect little getaway called Villa Julius. We only had two nights in the second floor of the first building, but oh my enjoyed them.

First of all, the staff was incredible. So friendly and happy, and not expecting anything extra for it, it was just the standard. This hotel is free from noisy neighbors and has an extremely nice little beach. The beach has sun beds in many variants, a cozy Gili-ish sitting group for 8-12 under straw roof with lots of pillows and serving from the hotel restaurant and bar. In front of the hotel is a nice little pool with direct access to two of the first floor villas.

The room was roomy with air condition (broken at our stay, but a new power supply was on its way) and a huge bathroom. Only place to shower was in a bath tub, which causes lots of water spilling on the floor, didn't like that. The room lacked a minibar fridge, so all cold drinks had to be bought at the bar. What we really liked was the view from our room. Straight to the beach and sunset at the evening. Woow!

The hotel manager is a Swedish girl with support from a German girl, both very helpful! With a western management, I feel I get more understanding as a customer, it makes my stay more relaxed. At the other place, Gili View, we struggled a bit with the communication.

As mentioned, the hotel is away from the center noise, and that means a 15 minute horse or bike ride away. If you have to order one from the center as well, add another 10-15 minutes.

All in all we had a great time. I enjoyed the peaceful environment, the view, the sunsets and the incredible and smiley staff! We tipped them well at check out :-)

If you're not the "party all night, all nights" kind of person, wants some peace, sunset, nice rooms, kind management and helpful and happy staff, this is the place!

PS: At our stay the air condition was out, but was to be fixed in November 2010. They were also in the working of establishing WiFi as well.

We stayed at Villa Julius for 5 nights. The hotel is beautiful - inside is modern, very clean with great decor. The grounds are just as good. It's set on the white sands of Gili T on a secluded part of the island. No nighlife here, only the sound of waves lapping at the shore. It's a place to relax... but if you want the buzz of the bars and restaurants it's only a 20 minute walk away, or you can hire bikes from the hotel for Rp50K per day or catch a 'horse and cart' taxi for Rp50-80k one way.
The staff would do anything to help you and the food is very good, and great value for money for eating at a hotel. They make the best banana pancakes at breakfast!
I notice some previous reviews comment about the failing electricity. At the moment the hotel is waiting for a new generator, so the current system can't cope with the in-built aircon, so no, there is no aircon and the lights are dim. My husband hates the heat so I was concerned it would be too hot, but because it's right on the beach, there is a slight breeze at night that cools the rooms and we had a fan installed above the bed, so heat at night is not an issue, we didn't find it uncomfortable at all. There was a mosquito net for the bed, but we slept with the doors open and found we had no need to use it. The new generator should arrive in the next month, so the aircon issue shouldn't be a problem anymore.
The hotel is set on a beach but surrounded by reef. You can only swim/snorkel at high tide (snorkel over the rocks) or walk over the rocks at low tide to get to an area deep enough to swim in. If you snorkel here you will see turtles and other amazing fish. The odd small harmless reef shark can be seen deeper (20-25m) when scuba diving here.
Anything to criticise? There are no fridges. I'm guessing because the current generator can't cope. When the new generator is installed a small bar fridge wouldn't go astray.

we stumbled upon this hotel when we were walking around the island. It was the last one before the island just turned into beach and very little else. It said $60/night on the sign but as there was noone staying we got it for 50 with a la carte breakfast.

The hotels' very cool decked out in modern whites, greys, black and reds our room was at the front on the top floor with stunning with views across perfect, untouched sea and the sun set right opposite the hotel - where we sat on the balcony listening to nothing but the waves. This hotel is a gem - the staff are super friendly and helpful, the food is fantastic and all made for you in their little kitchen (you can watch if you really want to. They have an awesome salt water infinity pool which is perfect as the beach has a lot of coral and the sea is shallow ( I cut my foot on day one!).

to escape everything but still feel spoiled this is the hotel to do it... only wish we could have stayed longer, a lot longer!

I stayed with friends at Villa Julius and had booked 4 nights there over new years. The hotel itself is beautiful - everything about it looks amazing. As soon as we checked in though we found air conditioners did not work and the rest of the electricity went off and on constantly. Our toilets did not flush and a few of the rooms had no water at all at times. One of the rooms we booked also had no light. The staff said the generator was broken and being fixed the day we arrived. It wasnt and I dont think it was ever going to work so we went looking for other accommodation but because it was new years we were stuck there. We didnt sleep because the heat was unbearable and the fans and aircon both did not work. We also had no soap to wash our hands and had to travel to the other side of the island to buy some (not a big deal but just added to the problems we were already facing).
In the end we managed to find somewhere else to stay.
The staff were fabulous and did all they could to make our stay comfortable but unfortunately there was nothing they could do. The manager that we booked with was on the island but did not make an effort to come and see us once not even when we complained.
Overall I was very disappointed. It was such a beautiful place it is a real shame that it is being let down by poor management and lack of proper facilities and maintenance.

I had high hopes of my stay in Gili Trawangan, an idyllic island paradise with crystal blue water and white sandy beaches, and where better to stay, I thought, than on the west side of the island to enjoy watching the sunset with a cocktail in hand.

I was certainly not disappointed by the location- Villa Julius has the best spot to watch the sun set behind Mt Agung on Bali and it is spectactular. The villa itself also looked lovely at first appearances- modern build, large airy rooms, nice decor.

Unfortunately it was severely let down by the following:
- dust; Gili T is a dusty place, but every other hotel we went to managed to keep the rooms clean and insect free, and to avoid a noticable layer of dust on all surfaces.
- murky pool water; as above
-no proper shower unit, just a giant bathtub lacking a plug and a hand held shower; crouch down and do your best.
- no drinking water available; not into the bathroom or minibar (because there wasn't a minibar)
-terrible food! Just how they messed up grilled tuna and salad then charged twice as much as anywhere else on the island is beyond me! No bread for toast at breakfast.. I could go on.
- lack of air conditioning; Gili T has slightly erratic power supply but for most of the night there was insufficient power to turn the air con on, even if the lights were on; cooling was reliant on one electric fan that turned itself off with every power cut.
- faulty window catches; either couldn't open or couldn't close the windows. Strong cooking smells blowing in through the window that wouldn't shut was an added bonus.
- lack of mosquito screens- if you could the windows open, in came the beasties. There was a net on the bed, but that didn't help trips to bathroom much!

All in all, my husband and I spent one very uncomfortable, hot, itchy, thirsty and hungry night at Villa Julius, for which we were charged US$75. When we complained to the manager, his response was to blame everything on the lack of power...
So we hot footed to other side of the island and had a fabulous time at Villa Ombak for the rest of our stay.
