“Fantastic Island Life”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2013

Our 4 day stay on Pelican Beach was awesome. The boat ride out was shorter than expected (about 45 min or so) and you're pretty much in instant chill mode once you hit the island. The rooms are nice and large with private bathrooms (at least in the duplex cottage we were in). Probably the most attractive thing about the island is being able to walk out and snorkel from shore. You can go quite a ways out and really explore the reefs just from shore. We did do side trip out to the Coral Gardens reef which was well worth it, as was the night snorkel.
Maybe the only drawback was a few unwelcomed cockroaches at night. I've dealt with worse and solved the issue of them by spraying DEET at the bottom of the bed-posts to ensure they wouldn't be making any unwanted appearances in our bed, but they were present and unwelcome.
The food here was excellent and there were plenty of snacks throughout the day to keep you full and happy.

This island resort is wonderful for families. It is safe and you can snorkel right off the beach. The service is great and the staff is very accommodating. Manager Daniel Rath offered world class services equivalent to what we could get at any five stars except more personable. This island is also good for romantic getaways because it has fantastic sunrise and sunset. And the price is fair.

The Smithsonian research station is on an island close by worth a visit.

We took an early morning boat out to South Water Caye and arrived before our room was ready. But this wasn’t a problem, as we sat on the deck with the complimentary fruit juice and enjoyed the quiet. When we did get to go to our room, it was wonderful – on stilts over the water and set apart from the other accommodation, with a big porch with hammocks and chairs in prime location to watch the sun rise over the sea.

There is a lot to be said for Pelican Pouch. Its part of the Caye is lovely, with a small beach, good accommodation and plenty of space. Most of the staff are friendly and helpful, and happy to arrange side trips out for snorkelling or fishing. There are nice touches, like the free biscuits and juice. The reef itself is only a short swim off the beach and there was plenty to see – nurse sharks, rays, squid and barracuda amongst all the usual brightly coloured fish. And it was wonderful to see a pair of osprey sitting 15 yards off our porch and hunting across the shallows.

We definitely loved our time on the island. But you are paying a lot for the privilege of being there and there are definitely a few niggles that we probably weren’t expecting having spent so much. The beach is a great place to sit out on, but there’s only a handful of chairs and loungers, and certainly nowhere near enough to cater for everyone staying there. Given that there’s not a huge amount to do except spend much of the day kicking back relaxing, this seemed like a huge oversight. And the food was both the worst that we had throughout our holiday, generally being fairly bland and boring, and the smallest portion sizes too – even the young children staying were asking hopefully for seconds (to be fair, mostly these were forthcoming). There were other things they have less control over but that were still frustrating; much of the rest of the island is a bit rough and neglected – it’s certainly not a beautiful walk around the fringes. And the reef has paid a big price for being so accessible, with huge amounts of damage, broken coral littering the area and sea fans knocked over. Pelican Pouch could take some responsibility for this, and stop their guests using fins when they swim out; even in the few days we were there I witnessed other guests inflicting damage – occasionally from stupidly standing on the coral, but usually from being totally oblivious to what they were kicking as they swam. Make people go bare-footed and they’d be a lot more careful about what they were kicking.

The Island is the best! The service and the food was over the top! Very healthy menu with fresh fish caught the same day! Fresh fruit at every meal and the cuisine was of the area! We asked many times what we were eating and loved it! The service was wonderful! The managers and staff go out of their way to accommodate the guests with any needs and with friendliness and a warmth that can only happen in Belize! The cottages are above and beyond any expectations! All located with water views! The resort is self sustained and runs on solar power, a lesson for those interested in how to live with renewable energy in an ecologically friendly community. The daily trips of snorkeling, diving and tours of nearby islands were often and inexpensive. The reefs are perfect for kids as the areas that you can snorkel are shallow with no waves or riptides to be concerned about. There are shaded areas with hammocks and beach chairs along the beach. There is a constant breeze on the island which reduces insects and keeps the rooms cool. There were no power outages or shortage of hot water for showers. Wi-Fi is limited. I would highly recommend this resort for those looking for a romantic or quiet, relaxing vacation on a beautiful beach. We did not want to leave! The ride to the island was a bit rough due to high waves, but it was part of the adventure! You will get wet on the ride so be prepared! We will be returning to this lovely place!

OK, so first up - this was not cheap but it was worth it.

Imagine - a pristine sandy beach, hammocks tied between palm trees, clear and clean water that you can see straight through, a mass of tropical fish, rays and the odd reef shark that you can snorkel to from the beach in a 2-3 minutes.

if you want bars, music, late nights, facebook updates, emails etc - this is not for you
If you want to be "lost" on a desert island to truly unwind or as a special getaway then this is right up there, although most people dont stay more than 5-7 days

The island itself is about 1/2 long, and made of three areas, the Pelican beach is one of these and has enough space for c25 guests in cabins. We went on the all inclusive package (all meals, water, fruit juices and unlimited supply of biscuits during the day - which is a nice touch). the food wasnt huge portions, but you could ask for seconds of any of the courses, although with the warmth and the laziness of most of the days we didnt need it. It was tasty and they took into account allergies and tastes (that they asked you when you arrived)
the trip from their main hotel (In Dangriga) to here was 25 mins by (bumpy) speedboat, across and through some of the reefs.
The island is eco friendly and there are charging points in the main reception area that guests can plug into and wifi there as well if you ask (although can be slow and a little unreliable, maybe due to demand)

Recommend the snorkel trips as well as snorkeling off the beach and also just sitting watching the pelicans eat as the sunsets into the sea.

Very friendly service for trips and dinner, lovely end to our holiday.

We had a wonderfull time at the Pelican Beach resort. We stayed in a cabin over the water with great views. In the tree next to us an oprey was resting every night. Snorkeling at the Island is very good, but also go to the further reefs and you will love the underwaterlife, Great for fishing and there are kayaks to use. The cook has some great special dishes and the staff is very kind.
Loved to stay here.

Room Tip: The honymoonsuite andthe Oprey's cabin are the best

Our family loved this hotel. Incredibly secluded - like on a deserted island. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Arranged snorkeling and fishing trips. Dinner is limited menu, but good quality and authentic cuisine. My kids loved that you could swim and snorkel right from the beach. Very quiet and peaceful -- no TVs or AC - just relaxation.
