“A total disappointment”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2013

We stayed at this resort several years ago and were excited about going back. I read the reviews concerning the food and i must agree that dining was absolutely a disappointment. The owners seem to have a project in the works off of the resort grounds and they don't see what is happening there. When the owners were present everything went smoothly but as soon as they left the grounds most of the staff would start to entertain themselves.
The prices for the food and drink are just rediculous. I have never seen prices like this in my travel in the philippines before. I had a raw burger once and a burnt one the next time., breakfast was ruined with cold eggs more than once. You can easily walk out the gate and eat near by for a lot cheaper price and the same or better quality. The waitress staff assigned to the dining room were usually very professional. However, the quality of the food was just blah.
The bar was unchanged and if you overlook the ants and cockroaches it is a nice place to sit. But getting a beer was at times difficult because the bartender was missing or not interested in getting us our beers. The bar service staff on the early shift were definitely a lot more attentive and caring then the evening bartenders. Most of the resorts in the Philippines do not allow their employees to have their cellphones with them during work hours. However some of the evening bar staff were using theirs on several occasions.
Our cottage was clean because of the house keeper but the condition is run down and badly in need of repair or at least some attention.
There are signs in the rest rooms saying Do Not Flush the Tissue Paper. What? Do you expect me to leave soiled toilet tissue in the rest room waste receptacle all day?
The island had some sort of electrical problem and we were without electric many times. The resort has a generator but was reluctant to turn it on. When we pay the additional for air conditioner we expect to be provided with power. One girl at the reception area desk told us that they had orders from the owner to wait two hour before turning on the generator.
All in all it was a very disappointing time at the resort and we will not return.

Room Tip: Choose a room with air conditioner and have the filter cleaned.

I have mixed review in this property. We stayed here in January for 2 nights in a beachfront room which we thought was amazing, which had a great tropical hideaway feel to it.

Most of the staff were helpful & friendly throughout our stay (one front desk staffer was unpleasant & lacking any interest in helping us with anything for our 25 wedding anniversary).

The food needs improving, but the bar and sunset are a winner!. I agree with a previous TP in saying they need a new chef, food was pretty acerage, chicken always over cooked.

It would be good if the resort allocates a smoking section, its not very pleasant trying to eat dinner or relax with a drink when you have an ingorant smoker lightly up next to you.

The pool was great, yes its salt water, but its not from the sea, they add salt to the water to treat it...its better for the enviroment.

Motorbikes are expensive to hire $500 per day. The return trip to the boat is $300.

Massage was trebbile! It would probably be the worst massage i have ever endured, all i wanted to do was get up and leave. She bascily massaged the same spot on each side of my body for 30 mins each over & over again.

Overall we liked the place but it wasn't with out its failings. Would i recommend it, yes if u stay in a beachfront room & only a few nights.

It is heartbreaking degrading this resort because it is obvious the owners are running it with love. Although we enjoyed our charmig beach front bungalow, the rest was less positive.

The restaurant is serving terribly boring and tasteless food (note there are few restaurants in the area so you basically have to choose the resorts' restaurant). I know how delicious food can be in the Philippines, so we were really disappointed after trying 8 different dishes. You have to wait long for the waitress to approach you and wait for about 40 minutes (never less) to get the food. Food is always over cooked and tasteless. I strongly recommended the resort to hire a new chef. I even overheared a discussion about the terrible food one day at the pool.

Another enormeous disappointment was the beach. Yes, Siquijor was hit by a tyfon weeks earlier, but I am talking low tide day time and high tide night time... Even if you insist on swiming in the sea as I once was, you have to walk through bad smelling mudd for a couple of minutes before even reaching the water. The water stinks and feels more like a smal dirty lake then the sea.

Why not hiering someone to clean the beach every morning? Why not building a long floating board walk so guests can reach the water without walking through stinking mudd?

We rented a car to find another beach but none of the beaches on Siquijor were nice as far as I'm concerned.

Coral Cave resort as well as Siquijor was unfortunately a less positive experience. I have travelled all over the world and enjoy exploring new countries and cultures in under developed areas. And I know from experience it is possible to run a great resort even under poor conditions.

We left Coral Cave Resort three days earlier then planned (though we already paid for 7 nights) and returned to Panglao insted where you find beautiful beaches, lovely water to swim in and fantastic food.

Finally, people on Siquijor Island were extremely nice and kind, both islanders and foreigners living there on permanent basis.

Nice and small beach resort, with about 20 rooms. The rooms are nice, nature and bungalow style, no luxury. The beach is nice and quiet, there is also a pool with kids section. The bar and restaurant is located quite on the beach, nice view to enjoy a beer. The food is an average, regular menu plus some daily seafood specials. I would recommend the resort - good price and quality ratio. There is a TV for kids to see cartoons, plus a pool table. There is also a modest fitness centre. Good resort if you just want to relax, read books, swim and do nothing :)

Room Tip: Choose the beach bungalows, which are straight on the beach, really 5 meters to the water. Other roo...

We had a good stay in a simple but clean hut by the pool (wich even had a nice seawiew) All staff was very friendly and helpsome.
We played biljard and the kids had lots of fun with a liana on the beach. The beach is beautiful but shallow at low tide. The restaurant has a very nice seawiew so don't miss the sunset!

The restaurant on the resort has probably the best view on the island. While drinking a beer at the bar you can see the sunset.

The people at the resort are fairly friendly. The cottages differ in quality. Since we arrived at 23Pm we had to stay in a 4 person cottage at the beach. This cottage was great. You're literally sleeping on the beach. Hammock out front. What else to wish for? That it was cheaper than 2600 pesos. We moved to a smaller room in the garden for a more reasonable rate 850pesos. This cottage was considerably smaller, had harder beds and only provided cold showers. The anti mosquito aids that are present in the beach cottage were nowhere to be found. That just comes with the price I guess. Fine by me.

The restaurant, as mentioned, has a great view and also good food. Stick with the asian food as they are not really mastering the western cuisine(except for pizza). Mango juice is extraordinarily tasty here! I think we've ordered about 10 of those during our stay.

The pool is a nice to have. Nothing special and should be cleaned more often. The beach is a better alternative. Unfortunately the beach was not clean due a typhoon some weeks earlier.

You can rent motorbikes at the resort. If you want to go for a discount go outside the resort and turn left. In about 100m you find a bikeshop at your right. They also rent motorbikes and let you pay 300pesos for one day. You can do a tour of the island in about half a day.

The town of San Juan is not much but we were there when there was a festival. Then it's really fun to hang around!

The only downside on the island is that there's only 1 ATM machine. Unfortunately it did not service Maestro cards (although the signs and cards said it did). When we arrived from our trip on the motorcycle that day - after having no luck at the ATM - we were "ambushed" by one of the resorts employees. Since we were leaving the next day she wondered why we had not paid yet. After all, she had been looking for us all day - poor kid. We explained our trip and the ATM's failure to cooperate and suggested to pay with creditcard. Now the funny thing was that their creditcard machine appeared to malfunction. Instead of looking for a solution the employee started to blaim us for not having one. The tone with she commandeered us was beyond all service oriented boundaries. Her suggestion was to take a boat to Dumaguete, withdraw money and get back on the boat to pay. Ludacris! After having a discussion with the morning personel they managed to do a manual credit-card booking through a service office in Manila.

The lack of service orientation, the tone the women addressed us with and the unwillingness to solve this problem leaves me no other choice than to provide a low ranking for this resort.

We felt like we were a bit tricked into heading to this place. We had another place we had decided on and then met a couple of locals en route, who advised us to head here instead. We rather got the feeling that there was either a finacial kick back from the resort to the indivuduals or that they were mates with the owner or both. This certainly seemed to be the case with the tricycle driver who was asked to wait after we had checked in.
I don't have a major problem with this, as long as the place delivers. However we felt utterly let down. It was seriously overpriced for a start. One of the reasons we were told to head here was because it had a pool, and apparently the sea at the other place we had chosen wasnt great to swim in. Having stayed at both I'd say this isnt true, and the pool here was filled with sea water anyway, and actually looked pretty grotty so we didnt even bother getting in, and the sound from the pump, pumping sea water into the pool, running for hours next to our room, was incredibly annoying.
All of the above can be looked over if it wasn't for the biggest problem which was that the staff were completely unhelful... we wanted advice on what to do on the island and when asked were made to feel like in was an inconvenience, and the advice itself was pretty much useless. The guide book suggested that anything could be arranged from here, from diving to renting bikes, we were told they couldnt organise these things for us, and we'd have to go and find a dive centre ourselves, so we did...
We went to a far cheaper place, with a much nicer atmosphere and better service, which represented far better value for money.
