“A place to unwind”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2012

If your looking for glitz and glamour move on . However if a beautiful relaxed Eco island resort is more your style then lady Elliott could be for you .
The diving and snorkeling is fantastic here you are at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef and the variety of fish and corals is amazing
We stayed in a reef unit which are comfy they have more basic accommodation as well as a few ocean suites which add air conditioning
The staff are very friendly the resort has a good bar and meals area and the food is good and you won't go hungry
They island is also home to many sea birds which add their own sights and sounds if your a light sleeper bring ear plugs!
A great place to enjoy the reef in an Eco friendly manner

Room Tip: Bring a good sun suit as its easy to get burnt snorkeling

My wife ,10 year old and I , wanted to be able to wake up,walk to the water and snorkel as a number one priority, preferably in Australia,to minimise our travel time to destination.
Lady Elliot was finally selected after a lot of searching and we could not have been happier with our choice.
A major part of the appeal, is that the only way on to the island is by light plane,a wonderful experience itself, being able to look down on the ring of coral from above, and then to see the black shape of a manta ray in the water from the air before landing, what a foretaste of things to come!
We spent five nights in a reef cabin 30 metres from the water's edge.
The accommodation was basic but comfortable and breakfast and dinner were part of the deal, all enjoyed in the communal dining room.
My son had a ball with the daily and evening activities, put on by some of the best staff we've experienced anywhere.
To Nick,Emma,Courtney,Mark and everyone of the staff at LEI, you're all legends!
Spaced out over of our first four days ,we swam every day with turtles, saw the entire cast of NEMO,saw a very large cow tail ray, wobbegong shark, white tip reef shark, black tip reef shark, moray eels, shovel nosed rays and countless other wonderful underwater encounters...but no manta rays..we new it was not their season, but we still had hope for our last day.
Then on our last snorkel of our last day on the Island, and beyond all real expectation ,we swam with a couple of manta rays...a truly awesome experience, for all of us.
We felt so privileged to be in the company of these huge and gentle, extraordinary creatures.
Simply, Lady Elliot had delivered on everything we had hoped for.......and much more.
One of the most eventful, laid back and memorable holidays we've had.
We'll be going back one day for sure!

Room Tip: A reef cabin is the way to go

This was truly a fantastic family experience in this Eco resort. We stayed there for 3 nights. Excellent period as there were thousand of birds nesting on the trees and on the grounds.
Period for the turtles to come up the beach to lay their eggs, and of coyrse the incredible varietu of sea life in the reef. A must to bring with you an underwater camera.
Absolutely a wonerful exoerience. Accomodation was more than correct for such a place in the middle of the ocean. We had a cabin ad the edge of the beach with a great view on the reef.

The location is awesome - the pictures taken from the plane will make all your friends jealous. The diving can be truly amazing " what would you like to see today guys? " Sharks, mantas, rays, turtles. The dive guys are great.
Snorkling with turtles is pretty cool too.
The bird life is incredible. The bar & food prices are incredibly cheap - bottle of sparkling wine $20 an ok Shiraz $25 , glass of wine or stubby $6.50 so you can ignore all the reviews that talk about 5 star prices !

The staff from reception, the bar, housekeeping, activities & kitchen were all fantastic. The food was ok to good.

On the down side - lots of birds means lots of poo , the smell may put some off.
The island is on a coral reef so the beaches are predominantly dead coral so forget walking barefoot over golden sands.
All the meals are buffets & the buffet management & presentation could definitely be improved.
They say "retail is detail" - well they could do with a bit more attention to detail.

The rate per night may seem high -especially to non Australians but when you consider the logistics or check the cost of other Australian Islands are you will see its actually very good value.

We had a reef unit & were pleased with our choice.

In short as always with Tripadvisor take the very extreme reviews with a pinch of salt.

Lady Elliot Island (LEI) was satisfaction from the time we set out until the time we were dropped off. We booked 7 days in a reef unit.
We were at Redcliffe airfield at 7.15am when our 14 seater Cessna Grand Caravan aircraft called to collect us. We quickly boarded the aircraft for our 90 minute flight to LEI, being handed a snack box as we did so.
Arriving over the island the pilot circled giving all passengers the opportunity for some great photos. As we landed, birds took flight, returning once we were on the ground.
We were impressed from the moment we set foot on LEI by the warm welcome of management and staff. They quickly gave us a run down of the island facilities and the basic rule, "Take only photos and memories, leave only footprints". The island is home for 95 species of birds and 1100 species of fish including turtles and manta rays and we were the visitors.
There were thousands of birds nesting in trees or on the ground, and sometimes you had to walk around a nesting bird that thought she would like to nest on the coral path. Some people found the odour of the droppings hard on the nose; we learnt to live with it. The birds could be noisy at times and earplugs were available in bedside drawers, but we did not need them.
Our accomodation was in a reef unit which was basic with a double bed, 2 bunks, toilet bathroom shower and a deck with a small table and 2 chairs.
Beakfast and dinner were included in our stay. The lunch buffet was $22 but burgers, chips or wraps were available at reasonable prices.
Unlike many resorts fins, snorkels, masks, reef shoes, towels and suntan lotion was free. When one of us cut a foot, antiseptic and plasters were free.
Snorkeling in the lagoon for 2 hours either side of high tide was superb, and to be joined by turtles was simply marvellous. Alternative snorkeling was available - a 5 minute walk to the lighthouse or the coral garden for more snorkeling.
The staff were friendly, helpful and informative, always ready to pass on their knowledge even when they were busy.
It is no wonder people return many times.
Would we return..........Absolutely

Room Tip: Reef units are near waters edge and may be less noisy

My husband and I stayed here for our one year anniversary, and it was absolutely magical!

There was wildlife all around us - birds nesting everywhere - and the island tour highlighted some of the more unique species and lots of history and island information. We also did the guided reef walk (highly recommended) and the glass bottom boat trip (a must-do). These were all organised by the friendly and knowledgeable staff, who were more than happy to answer any questions and help in any way they could.

The beaches were perfect for relaxing with a great book, and with so many spectacular spots and lots of lounge chairs around, we had a little piece of paradise all to ourselves! When we got too hot it was straight into the water for fantastic snorkelling just meters from the shore! Even when it rained on our second day, we had lots to keep us occupied and once you're in the water it doesn't matter either way!

The rooms were basic but clean and comfortable, and with so much to do we hardly spent any time in there anyways!

There were so many highlights in our two days that it is impossible to list them all (from the welcome and food to the sunset and activities), but having a loggerhead turtle get close enough to touch when you're snorkelling is hard to beat!

We had a 3 night stay on Lady Elliot in early October.
The island is absolutely breathtaking.
It is like stepping back in time no phones no Internet unless in their office no cars just so relaxing.
We stayed in Island suites one second and you step onto the beach. Clean comfortable.
Remember this is an Eco resort so you are not there for a 4 or 5 star hotel. Though the view from the balcony definitely is !!!
The staff are amazing their love and enthusiasm for Lady Elliot really shines through.
The restaurant is a little like school camp however, my kids loved their thick shakes and we loved the cocktails
They even provided us with a cheese plate and nibbles and cold wine to take over the other side of the island to watch the sunset.
There is bird life everywhere
The snorkeling was WOW and WOW we scratched friendly turtles backs saw amazing fish ( just like in Finding Nemo ) even swam with reef sharks! Devine we loved every minute.
So if you are considering going Just So It.
We will go back again.
