“A Wonderful Escape”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2013

A true escape from suburban living, we only stayed for 5 nights but it felt like a much longer holiday. We had a wonderful time and were very well looked after, this was truly the best hotel experience we have had in the UK. All the little touches added up to an amazing stay, fresh milk, water and home-made shortbread in the room everyday. Then waking up to amazing breakfast and lovely dinners in the evening. So much helpful advice was given on where to go and where to eat, we feel we really got the most out of Exmoor. A beautiful house in a quiet dream-like location, we will definitely be back in the future.

John and I are delighted you enjoyed your stay so much and are thrilled that you say it was the best hotel experience you've had in the UK - extremely high praise indeed and thank you very much!

We wish you all the best for your impending new arrival and look forward to seeing you again when you're ready to escape suburbia! We can't promise the amazing sunshine you've had, but rest assured it's a stunning area whatever the weather!

With our best wishes,

Jane & John

What can I say that has not already been said? We were made so welcome from the minute we rolled up on our motorbike. Off road parking was our number one priority with the bike and to be honest that was the only reason we chose The Dunkery Beacon at such short notice. So many places frown upon you when you arrive on a noisy motorbike, decked in leathers, but not John and Jane. Tea and scones in the garden on our arrival and we were instantly made to feel at home. We were very lucky with the weather but they have a drying room for your wet gear if we had been less fortunate with the weather. We decided to eat at the hotel on the Saturday evening, what a good choice. the food was fabulous with a excellent wine list. Our room was lovely with beautiful views across the countryside.
What started off as a decision where to stay based on where to park a bike turned out to be a real find and we will definitely return and recommend to others. Thank you for a lovely week end :)

Room Tip: We stayed in room 20 and it had fantastic far reaching views across open countryside

We're so glad you chose us for your weekend break and that it gave us the opportunity to show we had more to offer motorbikers than just convenient off-road parking. Thank you for your kind comments about our food and wine, your room and the spectacular views and it's great to know that you both had a lovely stay.

We hope to see you again, David's foreign work commitments permitting!

All the best,

Jane & John

We were so looking forward to our stay at Dunkery Beacon because of all the glowing reviews and we were not disappointed. Wonderful room with amazing views, the most comfortable bed ever, shortbread biscuits, real coffee and best of all a flask of fresh milk. John and Jane are welcoming and friendly in a way that makes you feel at ease. They have the ability to sense the type of approach and service necessary to make for a very enjoyable stay. All the food from John's kitchen is truly delicious and Jane's expert assistance with the wine list is to be recommended. The surrounding countryside is beautiful with glorious views around every corner and plenty of walks to suit most abilities. Can't wait for our next visit

Thank you so much for your glowing review.
Its great to hear that the 'Word' is spreading and sometimes you feel that the enthusiasm with which people pass on their news of a great holiday or the finding of a hidden gem can be too good to be true.
So it is nice to know that we appear to have exceeded your expectation and given you some good memories to take back and tell other friends about.
Have a lovely summer, we look forward to seeing you again soon.

Best wishes,

John & Jane

This country house has struck the perfect balance between making you feel welcome and looked after, while ensuring you have cosy spaces to just chill out and get lost in the quiet solitude of a truly beautiful spot. I think It may be my new favourite place to stay. The perfect escape from the chaos of city life to recharge, reflect and bliss out on the arresting views. The food is scrumptious, John is a master in the kitchen, and Jane's warm and easy going approach puts guests immediately at ease. There's also a lovely garden; homemade bread at dinner; the most comfortable bed ever; shortbread and real coffee in your room; even a decent hair dryer! These little details really do make all the difference. We will certainly be going back over and over again!

Wow - what a lovely review. It's really kind of you to say such great things about our place and we're so happy you both had a relaxing, chilled out time here. There really is nothing better than sitting on the verandah here on a summer's evening, with a glass in hand (of course!), and gazing out at the stunning view - and we're glad you took the chance to do that. Thank you also for complimenting us on the food, ambience and the homemade touches we offer here.

Anytime you feel like escaping the city again, then we'd love to have you back to stay!

With our best wishes,

Jane & John

I can only echo the other good reviews of this hotel. I searched for ages for somewhere to spend our 10th wedding anniversary weekend - originally I was looking in Dorset or Hampshire - but everywhere I looked there turned out to cost at least half as much again for an equivalent standard.

I went for the 1st floor premier suite four poster, which was fab - very spacious, comfortable bed, good shower and fantastic views. Fresh milk and real coffee in the room always a good sign.

John and Jane really friendly, helpful and efficient throughout. On arrival we were given a cream tea and we then indulged in a bottle of champagne to mark our anniversary. Breakfasts were excellent - choice of cereals and fruit juices, fresh fruit and yoghurt, and of course the full fried breakfast, which was lovely. They have also grasped the concept of bringing the toast out after the fried food, so it is warm when you want it - I've never understood why hotels always bring you the toast out first!

There is nowhere else to eat in the village so if you don't want to eat at the hotel you have to drive or taxi - Jane sorted us out a taxi into Dunster on our first evening where we ate at the Stags Head (see separate review).

The food is on a table d'hote type basis i.e. a fixed menu which changes each day but includes a meat, fish and vegetarian main. I am a bit of a fussy eater and have run into problems with this type of arrangement in the past, but John kindly sent us the menus for both nights a couple of days in advance so we could choose to eat on the night where the food was most to our liking. And it was very, very good. I had asparagus to start, then we both had steak, which was cooked exactly right for me. For dessert I had panna cotta and blackcurrant and my husband had lemon tart. All absolutely delicious.

John and Jane have only been here just over a year and it has clearly been hard work at times but they have done a really good job, as the reviews here show. I wish them the best of luck in the future and would thoroughly recommend to anyone to stay here and help them make it a success - they deserve it.

We recently returned from a lovely weeks stay in Somerset and North Devon. Our first four nights with John and Jane at the Dunkery Beacon hotel were just what we needed. Relaxation in beautiful surroundings, great food and very caring hosts. We were greeted warmly on our arrival with a pot of tea and delicious orange seed cake made by John. Our room had the most amazing views over the moors and surrounding countryside. We loved the fact that we could do a variety of walks from the hotel, it was very nice to return after a days hiking to a warm welcome and a large glass of chilled wine. We even got to look at the stars with John through his telescope, will will never forget the clear views of Saturn and the Moon. If you happen to be guests when the evening meals are not served its really not a problem. There are many places to eat in Dunster but much closer in the next village of Timberscombe there is a local pub, "the Lion" which serves good homemade meals, however do try to eat at the Dunkery if you can, its well worth it.
It was a pleasure to stay here and meet John and Jane. We will return one day soon.

Room Tip: Room 10 has lovely views and a seating area in the large bay window

Thank you so much for your review Linda and it was an absolute pleasure to have you both to stay - you were great fun! We were really impressed by the amount of walking you did whilst you were here and you certainly earned your large glasses of wine at the end of the day!

John is delighted that you enjoyed the meals here so much - as you know, food is his passion, so it's good to know that the many hours of sweat and toil he clocks up in the kitchen results in such appreciation and satisfaction from our guests.

We hope to see you both again before too long.

Best wishes,

Jane

This is a very high quality bed-and-breakfast accommodation and we were so pleased to be able to make a second visit. The warmth of welcome from John and Jane, the comfort and space of the accommodation, the high quality of cooking at breakfast and dinner, the cleanliness of our room, and that of the lounge and dining room, were, quite simply, faultless. From the cream tea that welcomed us on the first afternoon of our four-day visit, such attention was given to every detail, that we were left with a sense that we had been staying in a luxury hotel - but with much more personalised care. Although dinner is an optional extra, and offered from Wednesday to Saturday evenings, we were delighted that we were able to book the last places available so that we could experience John's cuisine from an excellent menu - we recommend it strongly. Service is excellent in every respect and our room was cleaned and tidied through the stay. The website is very helpful but cannot give a true sense of the space in and around this accommodation. Our room had uninterrupted views of the highest hill in Exmoor and the combes, heath, moorland, woods, and rural landscape that surround it. Not only is the house in a particularly 'dark' area for seeing the night skies, it is also wonderfully quiet. Although all rooms were taken during our stay, the insulation within the house must be very good as we heard no voices, TVs, doors closing, or plumbing during the day or night! A fabulous setting for a lovely Country House and an amazing centre for our walks and excursions around beautiful Exmoor. It is difficult to say what we liked best but we have returned home planning another visit soon. We least liked the fact that we had to leave.

Room Tip: Jane and John are very good at giving advice on all aspects of a stay - including which room will su...
