“What a Gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

A lovely hotel, with fantastic views across to Dunkery Beacon. We even managed to see Red Deer early one morning on the hill opposite.
Our room was excellent, with a separate sitting room, which was great to relax in each evening. The breakfasts were superb, and evening meals delicious with very tasty wine. John and Jane are wonderful hosts, making us feel very relaxed. Both of them were very attentive, and keen to make sure we were happy throughout the week. The décor is beautiful, very comfortable beds, and excellent facilities in the rooms. Each day we returned to homemade shortbread, fresh milk, and locally sourced tea and coffee. All thoughtful touches.
A lovely welcome was the cream tea on arrival in the beautiful lounge with a cosy woodburner, and again the great views. The hotel is brilliantly situated in a very quiet village, ideal for exploring Exmoor. I thoroughly recommend staying here, and plan to return again later in the year.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 5, a downstairs twin which had great views.

John & I are so pleased that you both enjoyed your stay with us. You certainly managed to make the most of your time here and explored quite a bit of the area, which is great. It's also very nice to hear that we hit the spot with our food and wine offering, the rooms and, of course, the wonderful views here.

It was a pleasure to have you and we really look forward to welcoming you again to this beautiful part of the country. I'm sure your husband will love it too!

Best wishes,

Jane (& John)

John and Jane have been running this excellent Country House for just a year. They are already establishing an enviable reputation. The location is stunning, the bedrooms are immaculate with extra touches-like fresh milk and bottled water. The public rooms have been refurbished and decorated very tastefully. John's years in the catering industry ensures the food is of the highest quality and very imaginitive and with Jane having spent 17 years with Berry Bros in the wine industry she has chosen some quality wines, add those attributes to a roaring log fire- well thats your evening taken care of! You can be assured of the warmest of welcomes and for this lovely couple nothing is too much trouble.
We have been twice in their first year and we are far from being the only ones.
Go on just try it!

Thank you so much for posting such a lovely review Gerry - that's really kind. It was great to see you and Jean again and thank you for recommending us to your brother who, in the absence of a computer, was kind enough to write a letter after his stay expressing his appreciation.

We hope to see you again before too long.

All the best,

Jane & John

We had a one night stay and will be returning without a doubt - we could not fault it. Felt very welcome from the outset and had a lovely cosy room with a gorgeous fluffy duvet! The dinner and breakfast were excellent and in a very comfortable setting. Nothing was too much trouble and there were lots of extra little thoughtful touches such as homemade shortbread biscuits and that they ask beforehand what kind of duvet and pillows you would like. The icing on the cake is the beautiful scenery!

Thank you so much for your kind review and delighted that you both had an enjoyable stay.
We hope the weather stayed clear for your journey over to Lynmouth and you managed to get some great views across the coast. Good luck to Justin for his next Ultra marathon event, wherever that will be (Yukon??!).

We look forward to having your parents here to stay in July and to welcoming you both back at some stage in the future.

Best wishes,

Jane

I recently tried to book a Saturday night stay in Lynmouth but all the best rated B&Bs and hotels were full (in February?! But I guess it was half term...).

I then stumbled across the nearby Dunkery Beacon Hotel. It had great reviews, wasn't fully booked, and their dinner/B&B offer looked exceptionally good value.

It turned out to be brilliant. Our room looked straight out onto the moors leading up to the beacon. Bed was super comfortable with huge duvet. Simple furnishings/decor, but very neat and tidy. Shortbread and chocolates were a very nice touch.

Drinks in the lounge around roaring wood burner stove then a fantastic three course meal (I had smoked duck breast on a bed of poached pear and beetroot salad, Grilled Rib Eye Steak with a Pate and Mushroom Filo parcel, Baby Roast Potatoes and Watercress Salad, followed by Chocolate Fondue with Dipping Fruits).

Jane and John were great hosts, obviously very enthusiastic. He's a great chef and she selected a wonderful wine for us (she used to work in the trade, so has a wealth of knowledge).
Breakfast was also excellent (just what you need before a long walk in February!).

Overall a great experience and one we hope to repeat soon - shan't be looking to stay in Lynton next time.

Room Tip: All rooms face the moor - some are just bigger than others.

We really appreciate you posting a review on your stay and are so glad that you both enjoyed yourselves. It's great to have such positive feedback on all aspects of what we offer here - the room, our food, wine and the general surroundings. It was nice that there were some fellow Somersetians staying too and made for a good atmosphere.

Please do look us up again, especially as you're not too far away.

Looking forward to seeing you again soon.

Best regards,

Jane

Stayed with Jane and John earlier this month and was amazed by the whole experience.
Dinner was exceptional as was the selection of wine (we loved the Rioja) - John is a fantastic Chef. If you like cheese ask for the cheese plate, it tastes as good as it looks.
Room 10 (1st Floor Premier Suite Four Poster) is the one to stay in. This has a bed that is so comfortable you will not want to get out and a view across the moors (with sunrise) that is amazing.

Room Tip: Room 10 is the best

It was great to have you both to stay and we're delighted you enjoyed the food and wine on offer, as well your room and the surroundings. Thank you for the glowing review - it is a nice way to end the 2012 season which, due to weather and financial climate, has made us try all the harder to make sure every visit is memorable.

We hope you'll come down to see us again in the not too distant future.

Best wishes & Happy Christmas!

We arrived rather early on the Friday afternoon, so John and Jane (the owners) ushered us into a warm and cosy lounge, heated by a wood-burning stove and served us tea.
The hotel was a hunting lodge in years gone by and is set in beautiful countryside. The lounge is warm, the dining room is elegant and a great deal of tasteful decoration has clearly been completed, quite recently.
Our bedroom was a little cold, but that may be the consequence of visiting in December - certainly the central heating was working fine.
We had dinner in the Hotel on our first night and it was wonderful (as you would expect, as John was a chef in an earlier career). In fact, it rather spoiled us for our second night's dinner in Dunster, which was adequate, but not up to the same standard.
If you're a walker, or simply want to explore this unsung area of Exmoor in N W Somerset, which is much more scenic than Dartmoor, there are plenty of villages to visit and hills and dales to walk through.
A lovely area, a very welcoming hotel, host and hostess and magnificent food. What more could you want?
I would certainly recommend this Hotel.

Room Tip: Room 5 has lovely views and a sitting room with TV, separate from the en-suite bedroom

Thank you very much for posting a review - we're delighted you enjoyed your weekend with us and, in particular, dinner on your first night. Thankfully, it was a beautifully sunny, if crisp, day for you on the Saturday and you were able to appreciate the stunning Exmoor landscape in all its glory.
We take on board your comment about the room being a little on the cold side. As this is our first winter in the property, we are still learning about the characteristics of this old building and have perhaps underestimated just how long it takes to heat up some of the rooms at this time of the year.

We both wish you well for Christmas and hope to welcome you again to this beautiful area in the future.

Best regards,

Jane & John

Great Sunday lunch, all the trimmings and beef cooked beautifully pink but no way under-done. No scrimping on the size of portion either. All washed down with a lovely glass of wine (really delish !) Really cosy atmosphere with roaring wood burning stove in sitting room.
Owner Jane Bradley (wife of chef John) showed me around the rooms that looked spotlessly clean and airy with views of Exmoor to die for.
After such a good lunch a brisk walk up to Dunkery Beacon was needed to shake it all down, shame that the weather denied us of all the views, just a good excuse to pay another visit.

Thanks very much for posting a review Robert and we're very glad that you and your group enjoyed lunch here last weekend. It's a shame that you were driving on that day, so couldn't take full advantage of the wines on offer (knowing you are a big fan of Berry Bros.!), but we hope you'll be back to visit/stay next year.

All the best,

John & Jane
