“A welcome refuge”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2012

We were lucky enough to find a room available when we staggered up to the hotel during a 3 day walking holiday on Exmoor. We received a warm welcome, including tea (with cake!) on the veranda, and enjoyed the fantastic view while our room was prepared. John and Jane are not only very friendly, welcoming people but they clearly know what they're up to as the whole experience was one of being very well looked after in very pleasant surroundings. We stayed a Monday, when the kitchen is closed, but as we were on foot, and there was nowhere nearby to eat, John kindly made us a snack, which hit the spot perfectly. I'd definitely go back there, and will be recommending Dunkery Beacon to friends.

We have just returned from a 3-Night stay at Dunkery Beacon Hotel. The hosts John & Jane, were very friendly and accommodating to us and our teenage son. We had a pretty, room on the top floor which had fantastic views across the hills and out towards Dunkery Beacon. The breakfasts are superb and really set you up for the day! John is a fabulous chef so dinning in the restaurant should not be missed! Dunster castle is only a short drive away and is well worth a visit. We will definitely be recommending this hotel to our friends and will look forward to visiting you again soon, thanks.

Stayed at Dunkery Beacon Country House August 2012 and could not have had a better time. The owners are so friendly and helpful, but not embarrassingly so - just natural. The food was excellent, whether it is the breakfast, which has outstanding sausages, free range eggs & honey - all locally sourced, or the evening meals served Wednesday to Saturday - the food was a serious notch above anything else we found in the Exmoor area. The rooms were super - the view from our room 10 took your breath away. We don't often say we will return somewhere, just because there are so many places to go, but we will definitely recommend here and certainly plan to return. Especially as it is the perfect base for the Exmoor area.

Room Tip: Try room 10 for panoramic views.

We really appreciate you posting such a lovely review and are so glad that you all four of you had a great stay. John & I enjoyed your company and you were very bubbly, fun people to be around! It's also really nice to hear that you enjoyed the standard and quality of the food so much - it makes all the hours John spends in the kitchen thoroughly worthwhile!

Agreed, the views from your room, and in fact the whole property, are to die for. The weather has been pretty good over the last 4 or 5 days and now the heather is adding a splash of purple, the view looking towards the moor is spectacular.

Please do come down and visit us again if you get the chance.

All the best,

Jane

We have just returned from a two night break at Dunkery Beacon. It really was a great find. Everything was so good, from the hospitality of John and Jane, the views over to Dunkery Beacon, the darkness at night with no traffic noise to the amazing evening meal we had. John is a brilliant chef and the evening meal should not be missed. The bedroom was large (room 10) and the bedding had a really luxurious feeling. This is definitely a place we would return to.

Thank you very much for your feedback and we're delighted you enjoyed your stay with us, particularly the room, the views and, of course, John's cooking. It was also nice to share with you some of my grandparents' old photographs of Malaysia.

We do hope you'll come and visit us again soon.

Just got back from a 4 day break at Dunkery Beacon Hotel. I wanted somewhere to celebrate my 50th birthday and decided on this one because of the fantastic reviews. we weren't disappointed. Jane and John made us feel very welcome from the moment we arrived. We had room 7 which was lovely. We would recommend eating at the Hotel rather than going out to local restaurants as John is an amazing chef. We dined on 3 of the 4 nights we were there and the food was consistantly high on each occasion. The breakfasts are also to die for! Phil especially loved the black pudding special!
We will definately go back to Dunkery Beacon and would recommend it to anyone looking for a comfortable, relaxed and high quality break. We will keep a check on your website for news of your Christmas Special.
Thanks again to both of you for a lovely stay. We wish you all the best for the future and hope to see you both again soon.
Phil and Julie

We really appreciate you posting such a great review and are delighted that you both had a lovely time here, particularly because it was a special occasion for you Julie. You certainly had the pick of the weather while you were down here and I'm glad that you were able to soak up plenty of sun during your stay. John is thrilled about your comments about the food....we'll have to make sure that the feta cheese tart is on the menu if you come to stay again!

Enjoy the rest of the "summer", and we really hope to see you again soon.

All the best,

Jane & John

Dunkery Beacon is a remodel, by the very new owners, of a 1920's fox hunting lodge. They have poured in buckets of sweat equity, resulting in a very comfortable, unpretentious inn looking out at the moor hilltop. Much work remains to be done. Our mistake was to stay only one night on our drive South, an insult to the hotel and a waste of driving time getting to the remote location on narrow single lane roads. The hotel is an ideal base for walkers but not pass-through drivers.
John, the owner, is also the cook and provides an excellent breakfast. A major objection I have is no dinner served Sunday through Tuesday. I detest having to drive miles to dinner after a long day touring, especially when I must refuse a drink and a glass of wine because I am driving.

Thank you for your review and we appreciate you taking the time to give feedback on your stay. We appreciate that the location of our property is somewhat "off the beaten track", but to most people that is the very reason they come to stay with us - to get away from the fast pace of life and to relax, unwind and take in the stunning views and countryside which surround us.

We took over this property a few months ago which, previously, was run just on a bed and breakfast basis only. We have only recently introduced the offer of evening meals to residents and non-residents but, because we are still trying to build that side of the business up and footfall is still fairly quiet, it doesn't warrant being open every night. There just isn't enough of a demand to make it worthwhile at the moment.

It is a shame that you were only able to stay one night because of your tight schedule and we sincerely hope that, should you plan to return to the UK, you don't overlook this area - it really is well worth a stay of a few days or more to fully appreciate what Exmoor has to offer.

Best wishes,

Jane & John Bradley

This is a gem within one of Britain’s lesser-known treasures, Somerset.
Jane and John Bradley are working hard to establish a reputation for a high quality hotel and restaurant – he is an experienced, imaginative and talented chef and she worked for a leading wine company.
Our five night stay at the Dunkery Beacon Country House Hotel was truly memorable, and we totally agree with the comments made in all the previous reviews. This was a peaceful stay in a comfortable country house with outstanding food and discreet service.
We enjoyed a warm and genuine welcome from the hosts. Our room – the Cosy Double with modern shower room – was cosy and comfortable with an advance choice of bedding.
The food was quietly superb, and the breakfasts were outstanding – with a choice of “specials” not encountered before.
The house is in a quiet village with views of Exmoor’s highest part. We hope not too many people discover this treat as we fully intend to return!

We are thrilled that you both had such a memorable stay here at Dunkery Beacon Country House and thank you so much for the high praise you have given us. It's encouraging to know that, although we've only been here 4 months, we seem to be heading up the right path and the enhancements and additions we've made to the business so far are meeting favour with all our guests.

We very much hope you and Jayne will be able to come and visit us again.

Best regards,

Jane & John
