“A gem within a treasure...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2012

This is a gem within one of Britain’s lesser-known treasures, Somerset.
Jane and John Bradley are working hard to establish a reputation for a high quality hotel and restaurant – he is an experienced, imaginative and talented chef and she worked for a leading wine company.
Our five night stay at the Dunkery Beacon Country House Hotel was truly memorable, and we totally agree with the comments made in all the previous reviews. This was a peaceful stay in a comfortable country house with outstanding food and discreet service.
We enjoyed a warm and genuine welcome from the hosts. Our room – the Cosy Double with modern shower room – was cosy and comfortable with an advance choice of bedding.
The food was quietly superb, and the breakfasts were outstanding – with a choice of “specials” not encountered before.
The house is in a quiet village with views of Exmoor’s highest part. We hope not too many people discover this treat as we fully intend to return!

We are thrilled that you both had such a memorable stay here at Dunkery Beacon Country House and thank you so much for the high praise you have given us. It's encouraging to know that, although we've only been here 4 months, we seem to be heading up the right path and the enhancements and additions we've made to the business so far are meeting favour with all our guests.

We very much hope you and Jayne will be able to come and visit us again.

Best regards,

Jane & John

A wonderful base for our walking group over a long weekend. Lovely rooms with superb views . Footpaths to Dunkery Beacon and other locations start from the house so it's a perfect base if you don't want to drive. John & Jane work hard to make your stay comfortable and the breakfast is unbeatable. Truly outstanding.

Many thanks for your review. Its nice to know our hard work is appreciated, although I hasten to add your group were not hard work in the least. The hotel is placed, as you say, perfectly for walking with the McMillan way passing the end of the drive, taking you on up to the summit of Dunkery Beacon.
Looking forward to seeing the group again in the near future.

Kind regards

John & Jane

we had an amazing weekend at Dunkery Beacon Hotel, we had room no. 7, great views and very large bedroom and sitting room, our bathroom was very large too. John and Jane are great hosts, friendly and accommodating. Breakfasts were first class. john's backround was chef. so food is very close to his heart. they are now starting to serve evening meals too.

i will give this hotel 10 out of 10, great place and wonderful location especially for walkers and those seeking relaxation and want to be close to nature.

Hi john, Hi Liza,
Many thanks for the feedback. It is great for us to know that what we are doing is not only appreciated, but also that you have a great time and despite the wettest June ever, you all managed to stay pretty dry. I would like to say I had a hand in that, but my influence over weather only extends to applying sun cream if we should be so lucky.
Looking forward to seeing you again.

Kind regards

John & Jane

I cannot fault the Dunkery Beacon Hotel. It gave us exactly what we wanted for a relaxing weekend away.

The location is perfect. A short drive from the beach, perfect for a morning hike up to the beacon (approx 2 hours each way), a short drive from historic Dunster, and due to its elevated position the views are absolutely stunning.

We stayed in room 10, which I would recommend especially for the views which were the best I've ever had from a hotel. It also has a large bathroom, with more views, four poster bed, sofa, tea and coffee. Couldn't fault it.The rest of the hotel is charming, and offers the comfort of a cosy country house with some more contemporary touches that bring it up to date.

We dined at the hotel on the first night and enjoyed a wonderful 3 course meal courtesy of John. The food was superb, atmosphere warm and relaxed, and something I'd recommend to anyone staying at the hotel. Breakfast was also delicious, and you certainly won't be starting the day hungry.

Thanks John and Jane, we hope to visit again.

Room Tip: Room 10 has a large bay window with raised seating area for enjoying the stunning views.

Thank you so much for posting a review and we are really glad that you both enjoyed your stay and were able to make two nights rather than one. The views from Room 10 are indeed fabulous, even when the weather isn't particularly good, it's still a stunning panorama. Also thrilled that you enjoyed John's cooking so much and Steve certainly proved he had a hearty appetite!

John & I were saying that the group of people we had last weekend were particularly sociable and really seemed to gel well. It made it very enjoyable for us too looking after such an amiable bunch!

We sincerely hope you'll be able to come and visit us again sometime soon.

Best wishes,

Jane & John

We chose this hotel from previous reviews on the web and were not disappointed - John and Jane were very friendly hosts (good listeners!!!) and John is a superb chef. We've been visiting this area for some 30 years and the hotel is situated in probably the best location we've visited - our room (room 10) was lovely, with a four poster bed, and had views to die for!! We wish the owners well for the future and have every intention of returning soon.

Room Tip: Room 10 has a large bay window overlooking Dunkery

We stayed at the Dunkery Beacon for 2 nights whilst my husband took part on the Ironman event, it also coincided with our first wedding anniversary.

Dunkery Beacon is in a stunning location and prime position to easily access restaurants, pubs and national park sights.

Breakfast was excellent with choice of continental or cooked. They also started it earlier than normal to cater for the ironman competitors.

Our hosts were extremely welcoming and made us feel at home. We had their premier suite with wonderful views on our second night - fabulous! We normally opt for luxury hotels but this place is just as good and provides a restful, welcoming and comfortable haven.

I hope we make it back in the near future!

We had the pleasure of very recently staying at Dunkery Beacon Hotel for 7 nights and felt compelled to share our experience with everyone. The hosts John and Jane, have recently taken ownership, and what an excellent job they are doing. The rooms were clean and well presented, and ours had a wonderful picturesque view.
Breakfast is served daily, and evening meals are served several times a week. The food was cooked, and presented to a very high standard by John, and nothing was too much trouble.

Never in our travels have we met anyone so accommodating, warm and friendly.
Thank you both very much for a most enjoyable stay. We wish you both every success in the future.

Christine & Ian R.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 10, which had a bay window that gave us a good view of The Beacon.

Thank you for your very kind comments and we really appreciate your feedback. John & I really enjoyed having you to stay and thank you for sampling dinner with us, not once or twice but three times! You timed it right with the weather - it's been pretty mixed here this week, although thankfully it stayed dry & very warm on Monday for the Jubilee celebrations on the village green.

We sincerely hope you can make it down here again next year.

Best wishes

Jane
