“Amazing meal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2013

We had stayed at Il Porticciolo five years ago and loved the rooms overlooking the lake and especially loved our meals there. We returned last month for a dinner and it was superb--everything was artfully prepared and delicious. Since our last visit, the chef has been to France, working for several years with the famous chef Joel Rubuchon of L'Atelier in Paris. He's returned with an impressive skill set and is now turning out gourmet meals at the Il Porticciolo restaurant.

I was surprised by the negative comments, especially the ones about the price. There is a "fast and fresh" option at Il Porticciolo with nice food reasonably priced. The gourmet restaurant is not high priced for the quality of the food. One of the dishes we had was a trompe l'oeil masterpiece that looked like a landscape with a conical pine tree, path and boulder, but the tree was made from chicken coated with finely minced parsley, the path was a green onion and the boulder was delicious whipped potato. The petit fours were all handmade--the prices reflect the time spent. Plus, all the ingredients are all top-notch.

I was also surprised by the negative comment about saying there is nothing to do in Laveno. Did they take the funicular to the top of the mountain with the panoramic view of the lake and mountains? Go hiking in the leafy forest? Take the convenient ferry to the artsy town of Stresa, the Borromeo Islands with the villas, palace and botanic gardens? Visit the monastery and chapel built into the side of the cliff? Take the ferry to Switzerland for an afternoon? Rent a boat for fishing? Take the bus to Luino on Wednesday to one of the biggest outdoor markets in Europe?

We didn't stay in a room this trip, but saw the place has been renovated. The carpark, patio, lobby and restaurant were all in great shape.

Nice location, if renovated :-) Our room had sea view, but was located above a water shrink, so we avoided to look down... Not very appropriate for families with small children, many steps to climb, parking was sometimes difficult. Main problem was the unhospitality of the owners towards foreign guests. We did not feel welcome, the male owner obviously preferred to work in the kitchen than helping his clients. His wife tried to be friendly but did not always succeed. Other stuff was rarely seen. Breakfast would have been okay if complete without several times having to ask for some bread, cheese, butter etc. The hotel has the character of a pension which has seen better times, and the focus seems to be serving clients in the restaurant who leave again on the same evening... :-) Once we had lunch on the terrace (breakfast on the terrace was not always possible!), food was fresh and good - avoid sleeping there, but go to the restaurant :-)

This place confused me to bits.... When you arrive you think you have driven in to a dilapidated supermarket carpark. From the outside the hotel is falling to peices and poorly constructed. Once you have desended the concrete entrance staircase and checked in, the rooms are actually ok. Recently renovated, funtional etc. We had a Jnr suite with a lake view. Nice view of the lake and Laveno.

I think maybe this hotel was ok in the 60's, maybe, but it is way past its 'sell by' date. It is as if someone has spent money trying to bring it up to scratch and faling. Simply falling to bits in to many places.

The breakfast, was watery coffee, a frozen crossaint, and cornflakes... Thats it. no exagerration.

All of which could be forgiven on a rather quiet stretch of lake Maggiore, if the manager wasnt so grumpy!!! (I assume he was the manager. could be the chef i guess). Grumpy, dismissive and made all to feel generally unwelcome. There was one helpful lady trying to make up for this guys rudeness, but an impossible task im afraid.

Unless you have to be in Laveno, i wouldnt recommend staying at this place.

Room Tip: Jnr suites were fine, dont know about others. Ask for one.

1) This side of the Lago Maggiore doesn't worth a trip. If you want to visit some authentic gems,cross the lake!
2) Laveno is not interesting;
3) The hotel is well located with a nice view but should be sharply renewed;
4) The staff is extremly unfriendly;
5) Breakfast is very poor;
6)We didn't have dinner at the hotel's restaurant
