“AMAZING!! Honeymoon Bliss for us!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2009

My new husband and I spent 5 days at the Villa Imperiale after spending 5 days in Tuscany on our Honeymoon! The room was absolutely amazing with 2 balconies, and amazing views of Lake Como (room 522 if you want to request it!). After spending our days walking, exploring Tuscany we loved having some down time by the pool as well as the short drive that it is to see some amazing small villages and eat amazing cuisine. I would recommend this hotel to anyone, it's awesome. NExt door is the ferry stop and on the other side is a public beach with a pizzeria, and diving board into the lake. We drove north one day and rented a boat, and spent a day on the lake which was incredible. The staff at the hotel were most friendly, and had wonderful recommendations for dinners!

We arrived at Grand Hotel Imperiale in the afternoon, it was located in one of the most gorgeous parts of the lake. Immediately upon reaching Reception we thought - Oh No we will not be in the smaller part of Hotel right on water as we imagined from pictures we were able to see from Internet site but to our absolute surprise we had been allocated Rooms in the Villa which was what were hoping for - so after a long drive we settled into gorgeous Rooms with breathtaking views of the Lake and surrounding Villages. No trouble getting our car parked in the garage on the premises. Bowl of Delicious Summer Fruit was ready for us and everything was just so perfect for our needs that we were sorry that we only had 3 nights in this beautiful peaceful haven.
We toured the lake villages from the boat which picked us up about 20 meters from hotel and had a fantastic day on lake to and from Bellagio (which is much more invaded by tourists- this is OK but we love it when the towns we visit are less overrun by tourists) Moltrasio is just the sort of quiet peaceful place we like to spend time in.
The staff in the hotel were very obliging and very helpful, Room was very comfortable only thing I suggest that Management put some hooks on wall in bathroom so that robes don't need to be put on floor - minor problem. The toaster in breakfast room should be placed more centrally so that the crowding and confusion in the corner can be eliminated, a couple of older folk were getting a little annoyed with us as it looked like we were taking over the corner, not so, just an awkward situation . Restaurant - sitting out overlooking lake was just divine although on second night the staff looking after us were many so were not able to build up a rapport with anyone in particular, when it came to signing for the bill a young man turned up with it and therefore he got a good tip which we were not sure if the very well spoken, knowledgeable of his Menu and pleasant guy who took our order got any of it, as we had messed up with tipping at the previous dinner in the same dining room we wanted to make amends but not sure how it all works out among the staff, I suppose not really our concern. The Reception staff and Room Service staff were extremely helpful when w needed to send a large parcel of excess luggage back to our home they found Box (right size) tape, scissors, marking pen etc. so that all we needed to do was pack, label and take to Posta next day. If we ever get the opportunity to come back we would love to stay in same gorgeous room with balcony so that we can sit, relax and enjoy sites of one of Italy's absolute Treasures. We also wish to thank the Hotel Manager/Director who was extremely approachable and friendly.

The most important thing is that as guests we did not notice "the back of the house" .The service we received was more than just kind. It was professional. We spent our time in Moltrasio both for business and pleasure and found the surrounding very freindly with very good restaurants near by. Breakfast at the hotel was very good. The only thing which bothered us (only a little bit) was that in our room the mattress was not tough enough... But this is a matter of taste we suppose. The hotel staff was very kind. Room maids, servants as well as receptionists were very helpful and always with a smile. We stayed in the hotel for 5 nights, enough to realize we are in a very good place!

The location is perfect for exploring the Lake Como area, whether by boat or car. Our room was spacious, clean and nicely furnished with a beautiful view of the lake. The staff was friendly, courteous and accommodating, from Franco and the front desk staff (who were most helpful in our quest to retrieve our "delayed" luggage) to the sweet young lady who delivered our room service coffee each morning. The buffet breakfast offered a wide variety of food and the patio was a lovely place to enjoy the morning. The lakeside restaurant was delightful. The food was excellent and Franco (manager) and the entire staff worked very hard to ensure a positive dining experience. After our weekend stay we left to explore the Veneto area. Although we enjoyed our days in Venice and discovering the wonders of Palladio in the Vecenzia area we realized we kept talking about how wonderful our stay at the Imperiale had been. So we cancelled our reservations for a return trip to Tuscany and went, instead, back to Lake Como and the Grand Imperiale Hotel for the final 4 days of our stay in Italy. We were not disappointed with that decision!

Lake Como is of course beautiful and the hotel is nicely located lakeside. The lobby is large and impressive and everything is scrupulously clean. Unfortunately, the rooms are small and mine was not as promised. I booked a classic lake view which according to the hotel website, has a balcony. My room had what I would describe as a partial view of the lake and french doors which led nowhere. Not even a tiny ledge to stand on. The room was very small and although it was a double, it would have been quite crowded with two people in. The decor was sparse and uninspired. Tiny light bulbs meant reading in bed was difficult. The mattress either needed to be turned or replaced.

The swimming pool is undersized for the size of the hotel so it is very crowded and doesn't have enough seating. There's nowhere else to sit outside except for at the restaurant or bar. There's a large open lawn area that was being used as an area for children to chase each other. It would be nice if it had groupings of comfortable chairs and chaise lounges instead.

The internet connection in my room was not operating. When the staff couldn't solve the problem, they provided access to the internet in a meeting room at no charge.

Saturday morning breakfast was an unpleasant experience. When I arrived at approximately 9:15, almost every dish on the buffet was empty. I waited 5 minutes for more eggs that were runny and cold when they arrived. When I asked about more bacon, I was told two minutes. It took closer to 15 minutes for the bacon, fruit and bread plates to be replenished. There's one small old fashioned toaster requiring the bread to be placed in a frame and turned by hand. It was located in a corner that was difficult to access and because only two pieces of toast could be made at a time, I gave up on having any. There were about three staff members to serve coffee and tea to the large crowd of at least 100 diners. The only way to get coffee was to grab one of them as they rushed by. No one came to the table to ask what you'd like.

I wouldn't stay here again.

We stayed here over Easter 2009 and we liked the hotel very much. The rooms are smart and clean, quite business-like (although we did have some trouble with the internet connection). Our standard double had a view over the hotel's lawn and to the lake beyond with a full length French window. The bathroom included a decently powerful shower.

Moltrasio is quite a long way from the main tourist attractions on the lake; Bellagio and Villa Carlotta are around 40 minutes by high speed service and 1.5 to 2 hours by standard boat. On the plus side, the touristy centre of lake was extremely crowded over the Easter weekend and surrounding bank holidays, whilst Moltrasio was still fairly quiet. The disadvantage: travelling a lot by ferry can get pretty expensive, and ferries returning to Moltrasio can get pretty sparse in the evenings.

The village itself is very pretty with waterfalls tumbling down a cliff over the village and between the houses to the lake. The hotel couldn't be better situated, with a ferry terminal (visited by some of the high speed services) almost directly outside. There are a few places to eat nearby, but a lack of choice in Moltrasio can be a problem as some of them completely sold out of food by the end of a bank holiday. We didn't have this problem with the hotel restaurants, though; we ate in twice and enjoyed the meals very much. The complimentary breakfast buffet was pretty good, including bread, cakes and pastries, hot food, cereals, yoghurt and fruit and pretty decent hot chocolate :-)

The only fly in the ointment; we asked for recommendations for travelling to Linate airport and were assured that the only way to get there was to let the hotel arrange a "taxi" (actually, their own private car) for 120 euros. We didn't take them up on this; after doing a little research we took a taxi instead to nearby Como train station (a 20 euro trip), then 30 min train to Milan Centrale followed by a short direct coach directly outside the train station, which was pretty painless and cost around 20 euros each in total.

We stayed in the Villa for 2 nights and were extremely satisfied. The room was huge (for European standards, at least), and modern. You can get internet access directly in your room for a reasonable price. Breakfast was excellent - the best out of all our hotel stays in Italy. The staff was very helpful. The restaurant was excellent (great service) and the tennis courts are a nice bonus.

Don't let the area keep you from this hotel. It is located in Moltrasio, which is outside of Como. It takes about 20 minutes to get to Como by ferry and the ride is beautiful. The ferry comes pretty often and only costs 3 Euros. You can also take a cab which costs about 20 Euros. So, it is definitely easy to get to Como but staying outside of that city has its benefits: The hotels in Como seemed to be more old-fashioned, and a lot more expensive. The price for this hotel was very cheap for the quality of rooms and services- it almost seemed too good to be true!

All in all, great rooms for a great price.
