The hotel is situated 2.5 miles above the lake on a long, winding and hazardous road. It is described on the website as being handy and charming. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t call hairpin bends, cliff faces and no barriers on the road side, charming. Therefore you had a long and traumatic car journey down the narrow roads to reach civilisation.
The shop is also probably as far as they state on the website, what they don’t say is that it is uphill the entire way, and I don’t mean little hills. There is no way you could walk there every day, so we had to drive.
The apartment itself was very basic. The windows didn’t have insect blinds, so you either bake, or have the window open and turn into a human pin cushion. There were no fans in the rooms, so again it was unbearably hot. The only cooking facilities were a hob, which was useful, but an oven would have also been good as the Pizzeria upstairs was shocking. The food was tasteless and came out at different times, we only ate there once. The owners other restaurant down the road is also nothing special, just overpriced tasteless food.
The owner Linda was nothing but rude and grumpy. We spoke Italian to the staff but she showed nothing but impatience. We felt very unwelcome, especially as we were the only English guests staying at the hotel. The German guests were given a formal greeting (in German )and a 10 minute introduction to Tignale over breakfast with free drinks, we just sat and watched, expecting an English introduction after, but no. It was a horrible to feel so uncomfortable in a foreign country.
The outside swimming pool is a joke, probable 5ft by 5ft. The indoor pool is ok, but who wants to swim indoors? The ‘fitness room’ was similarly laughable, I bought my gym clothes, but didn’t use them once, as the equipment was ancient and worn.
The good points: Elga and a few waiters were friendly and welcoming. The lake its self was beautiful. We would return to Lake Garda, but to stay on the lake side. There is no point going there when you’re so far away from the water.
