“Converted farmhouse, affordable luxury”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2012

This is another great place for a romantic getaway. The hotel feels luxurious but it is affordable. Great value for money.
Location - in a converted farm house, 2 minute drive from the beach - Platja Castell
Rooms - each room is unique, very tastefully decorated, with interesting carpets and accent pieces
Internet - Free wifi
Breakfast - good breakfast buffet with local cheese, yogurt and pastries, try the "taps" a local muffin which is delicious
Pool - the hotel has an outdoor pool, set in the fields, very relaxing
Restaurant - the restauarant is ok, good value for money

Room Tip: The garden suite is good for children because it opens to the garden and they can run around.

We had two nights at La Malcontenta in August and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The hotel was full however it always felt quiet and peaceful. The beach is about a 15 minute, easy walk away and the water is nice and clear and the beach not too crowded - compared to other beaches in the Costa Brava (however we were there very early in the morning).

The food in the hotel was delicious. Breakfast was So generous and was taken on lovely little terrace. The pool food and service was excellent as well. We ate in the hotel's restaurant both nights and enjoyed ourselves but some meals were excellent and some were just o.k.

The pool is huge and a great spot to relax in the afternoon.

We stayed in a few hotels in the area and there were very few others with the service and facilities that La Malcontenta provides.

We would definitely stay here again.

We stayed here for 4 nights in August.
Room - we stayed in room 12, which is lovely but does only have a window high up on the wall, so little natural light comes in. For us that was fine as we had already been away staying in several other hotels with views and balconies. However if this is a long weekend or your first few days on holiday then I would look at the other rooms.

Property - we do not agree that it was difficult to find. As long as you follow directions it is only a few minutes drive off the main two lane road on way to Castell beach. The layout is relaxed and spacious and a perfect place for a romantic setting. There is a very good restaurant on the property where they serve lunch and dinner, however the dinner can feel a bit formal (in case you want a relaxed meal this is probably not the place). Food was great though.

Breakfast - great, one of the best we had during our 2 week trip through Spain.

Pool - large and pretty, however not particularly child friendly so not a place where I would go with smaller children. The pool bar opens in the afternoon (time varies) and they serve a few dishes for lunch here as well. Pool staff were excellent!

Service - Generally good during the day, however as others have commented after 17:30 when the evening staff comes on the service is more or less non existent with no english spoken. we were quite shocked that a hotel of this standard would employ a 20 year old with no experience to cover both reception and the bar in the evening. Most nights there were one person looking after everything and at no stage did he or she ask any of the guests if they wanted anything from the bar. The guests would sit outside where there are tables and chairs and all the doors to the hotel would be closed as the air-condition was on inside (and I guess the evening staff preferred the cooler inside air!). As the staff didn't come outside to take drink orders it meant that the guests had to go inside and walk to reception and ask if they could have a drink. Every evening this became an issue even though we raised it with the manager.

Bikes - 6-7 bikes available to use, however they were not in a good condition when we used them on our first day so I asked the (evening) staff if they could do something about it for the next day. I was then handed the tools to repair the bikes myself. Not what you would expect from this hotel.

One comment I would like to make is that we spoke with some of the other guests who were spanish and who have been to this hotel several times, and they seemed happy with things as they were. Not sure if this is just a cultural difference with the spanish being more relaxed, but if you expect more from a 5 star hotel then I suggest you stay somewhere else.

So I read a fellow traveler's caveat with regards to La Malcontenta being a tough hotel to find, and they were absolutely correct. But, you see, don't let this dissuade you from being that adventurous traveller you sought out to be. Once you get off the highway and onto the tiny rural road, where one must look both ways to avoid either hitting a herded sheep or a casual bike rider, you're headed for a true pleasurable escape only minutes away.
Peaceful, laid-back, bikes to rent, accessible to the coastal towns. The staff is accommodating and the restaurant is a real treat. All and all, It feels like you got invited to someone's country home.

Room Tip: We loved the single room house.

It wasn't easy to find; but, we finally did it after wandering for an hour. Tranquil location & very nice large clean swimming pool with upscale lounges & poolside service--exceptional for a small hotel. Rooms very spacious; but lack easy storage for lots of luggage. Also, a little sad on the seating, because you have to put suitcases on the available chairs. BIG walk in shower; but, poor lighting in the bathroom. No magnifying mirror-so, difficult to shave. Nice balcony with view; but, pesky wasps kept us inside most of the time. Free internet. Charming staff--the evening shift does not speak English. Absolutely superb breakfast. Castell beach is a 15 minute walk & one of the best in the area. But, that beach is absolutely jammed on the weekend. Adjacent restaurant best for lunch (great fixed menu value); the evening menu has very limited selections.

Room Tip: Grand room with balcony--all rooms expensive--so the big rooms are worth the extra cost.

The house and decoration in this hotel are very sophisticated and beautiful, the high ceilings, big mirrors, marble in the bathroom... It is very comfortable, the beds and linens are wonderful, and there is no noise at night. The breakfast was huge and delicious. We loved the swimming pool. Everything is extremely clean, and luxurious. It is a big advantage to have a little stroll to go to a nice beach, not crowded at all.
We were doubting to give it a fifth star for "excellent" just because of some very minor details: the DVD did not work and we had to change it, the welcome at reception was not too great (no "welcome" word at all), and the room with the WC is a bit dark. Everything else was wonderful!
We hope we'll go back.

Room Tip: We stayed in a suite with terrace, you have good views to the surrounding nature, and the terrace wh...

Althought the setting is bucolic, has good services and the cottages are very confortable, in my opinion is an upgraded hotel not as a luxury understanding. A low note to the staff because a hotel of this category should be more profesionalized. A really bad experience at the restaurant. Even the waiter had attended my complain about one of the dishes, the maitre was unable to interest. And menu prices aren t really fair. In fact, you pay an overprice if you compare with other hotels in the area, i supose for its excellent marketing department and its press notes and good qualifications in specialized international travel magazines
