“Short Break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2013

My wife and I recently enjoyed a three night, midweek stop at the Oriel. This was not the best hotel we have ever stayed in but the accommodation, general facilities, and food in the restaurant were more than acceptable. Factor in the exceptional service and the cost and this proved to be very good value for the money which, surely, is what most of us are looking for.

I recently checked in and then checked straight back out of this hotel which I had organised through a KGB voucher. The outside of the hotel looked very dated and not as grand as shown in their photographs. The reception was find and the girl workingo n reception was very sweet. That's where the good news ends. The rooms are so dated and unclean that I didn't even want to walk on the carpet. The bedlinen was worn and "bobbly" to the touch. I can only think that the people that think this hotel is good quality must usually holiday in a tent. We stayed approximately 25 minutes after being shown 3 rooms all below standard and then shown to the bar area which had tarpaulin hanging from the ceiling as the conservatory floor was being relaid. The tarpaulin was blowing noisily in the wind. Absolutely attrocious. Never again !

Room Tip: Don't choose any

Saltrese, General Manager at Oriel Country Hotel & Spa, responded to this review, May 16, 2013
We are sorry that this customer didn’t find our hotel to her satisfaction. The rooms that she was shown are the same type that lots of our other Tripadvisor reviewers are referring to and it is extremely rare that we receive feedback of this nature. We use a very reputable linen company, and again, it’s rare to receive feedback like this about the quality of their product. Our conservatory was being retiled on the evening that this customer arrived, but was available the following day with a beautiful new floor for guests to enjoy (this customer was due to stay two nights and could have made use of the area on the second night). The lounge, bar and terrace restaurant were all available though for dining on the evening in question. As most of our regular guests are aware, we operate an ever ongoing program of hotel improvements, and this was one that was undertaken. We did make contact with this customer directly on a more formal note to answer her concerns, and whilst we appreciate that we can’t always please everyone all of the time, we really do try to do our best to offer a quality product which is value for money.

thanks

Stayed for a couple of nights last month, hotel was lovely, room was really nice no complaints at all.
Staff were nice and helpful, food was good, breakfast really nice, dinner excellent just little pricey.
Pool area was ok but could have been nicer, I felt it let the rest down but was all I needed.
Spa was hard to book, I have had to book again to spend a voucher for the spa.

Pleasant hotel with good staff. Comfortable but needs some attention to decor. Seems to specialise in weddings, corporate and group functions. If you went as an individual booking you may feel isolated. Lovely conservatory, but may not be available if in use by a function. I didn't use the spa. Food for our group was good for mass catering and the unflappable staff coped well with people arriving at the wrong time, sitting at the wrong tables and deciding they didn't want what they had ordered. The risotto was one of the best I've had.

Room Tip: Avoid those on road side and overlooking car park.

Reception- Friendly, welcoming and very helpful
Rooms- Spacious, clean, well presented. Bed comfortable and big.
Bar. Busy but because it is very popular with local people, also much used for weddings, wakes and conferences. Drinks are premium priced.
Grounds well maintained.
Spa friendly staff and clean.

Must be considered for a relaxing stay. With superb history close by.

Room Tip: By special request we were provided with a ground floor room ( impaired mobility) as no lift fitted...

We enjoyed our few days at this hotel. The staff were helpful and very friendly. Some of the hotel is in need of updating but the bed was comfortable, the room clean and roomy. The swimming pool is small but nice enough to have a swim. The sauna was hottish but old and outdated.
The food was excellent, good choice of menu and the breakfast also excellent. Hotel is positioned near to the Rhyl coast and 30mins from Chester and Llandudno. Would recommend this hotel.

Very comfortable place to stay, very clean, very friendly staff. A little out-dated in some places and the shower didn't work. Bed comfortable, room large, huge bathroom. Nice place to stay. Breakfast was excellent, best scrambled egg I have had in a while.
