“Wonderful!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2013

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights in May 2013. It was absolutely wonderful. Ampudia is a very small and quiet town, but very picturesque. 2 nights might be too long for some if you aren't planning on drives to enjoy the beautiful surrounding areas during the day.

The hotel itself was lovely. The staff spoke more English than we had expected, and whilst not modern, our room and the hotel in general was full of character. Our room was clean and very large. Also, surprisingly quiet considering the age of the squeaky staircase!

We enjoyed a game of billiards with a couple of drinks from the bar. My husband also used their small, but functional gym. We didn't use the pool or spa (much to my disappointment!).

We were given a Spanish Experience Stay from friends called Plan B. When we booked I was a little nervous as everything was in Spanish. I emailed the hotel to confirm our booking and ask what we needed when checking in. They were prompt to reply, and the booking process was very easy - nothing was too much trouble.

We chose to have our included meal the first night, and it was so delicious, we dined at the hotel the second night as well. We thought the meal and wines were great value for money when taking the very high standard into account. Breakfast was also fantastic.

All of the staff we had dealings with were friendly and eager to please despite our very basic Spanish. We would have no hesitation in staying here again or recommending this hotel.

A month ago I booked this hotel for the 6th September, guaranteed the reservation with my credit card and received an email confirmation. Two weeks before I was supposed to stay at this hotel as part of a long trip through France and Spain I received a mail from the hotel to cancel my reservation because, the manager Veronica Laguna said, they had problems i their computer reservation system....
In a way, considering all the complaints that one reads against this Posada, perhasps this was a blessing in disguise but in any case a very regretable and unlawful one!

Dear Customer,
First, we ask our sincere apologies for the situation that occurred with your reservation at our hotel.
As confirmed Veronica, the head of reception, due to a problem with our reservation system, several rooms were confirmed on dates which the hotel had no availability in.
From the hotel management were offered you to stay at other Bucolic hotels in Cantabria, but the proposal was declined, likely to be out of your destination.
Actually, we apologize for it, and hope you can understand that If we would have had a better solution, it would be offered to you.

Best regards

The hotel was a great surprise in the middle of dry and wide Castilla. The decoration, the rooms, the shared spaces (restaurant, swimming pool, coffee room or bar) all was amazing, comfortable and stylish. We enjoyed our room and the hotel so much that it made difficult to go out (although the village of Ampudia is nice and very tidy). Since the fresh fruit at breakfast you can expect a wonderful day ahead...

If you are looking for relax, rest and reading, this is the right place for your holidays.

(And they can also organise conferences and professional meetings, although this is something you can not think about while you are having a massage here!)

  • Liked — The relaxing atmosphere (hotel and clients)
  • Disliked — Swimming pool is possibly a little small

room was very dark (small window on ground floor) - staff very slow at the bar - we had requested a twin room and ended up with a double bed - the sauna etc was not heated and I had to wait more than one hour to be able to use it - on top of that, a bad semell in the corridors: not quite the level of Relais & Chateaux !

the worse was the restaurant: supposed to be a one star Michelin but they forget to mention when you book a table that on Sundays evening they serve only ham as appetizer and then a steak as main dish...this is food you get anywhere...and they charge it anyway at a one Michelin star prices...and this was the main reason to select this hotel... a complete disapointment !

Lovely hotel in small Spanish village 20m/30km from Vallalodid airport. Many unique items displayed throughout the hotel give it character and make for an interesting stay (old abbott's habit/smock etc). Hotel food well presented and able to match that of any top restaurant (menu limited but willing to adapt where needed). Surprisingly restaurant very quiet whilst we were there. Breakfast had OK selection of cereals, meats, bread etc.. Staff very attentive. Outdoor pool and small garden area for catching some rays. Also has super spa (may need to pay/may come with first night package) with spa pool, steam and sauna. Room well appointed (only point to note was that sink plug did not work and power shower instalation had damaged tiling). These are minor points and did not affect stay (!) but worth noting that you have to go with the character of the place. Amudia, the village, well worth a morning's tour - church, castle (with visits), museum and lovely main square.

  • Liked — Lovely feel to the hotel
  • Disliked — Some issues with equipment not working

This is a gem. A wonderful experience for those seeking something completely different. The house is amazing - stairs and steps, objects of great curiosity, a tiny chapel, wonderful splashes of colour, restful public rooms, superb restaurant, very well appointed rooms with all the comforts you might need and a very nice staff. The village of Ampudia is wonderful, a very different streetscape which has stood for centuries. The parish Church is a soaring, wonderfully kept building which exhudes a sense of Spirituality of the ages. Teh Casa del Abad fits perfectly into this village and has done for centuries.
Well worth driving to experience rural and wonderful part of Castile y Leon. Truly great.
