“Authentic Cuba”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2013

This Hotel is 110 years old, but was only recently reinaugurated. The rooms have more than the 5 star hotels in any other place visited, it was a positive surprise, even a iron plus board.
The drinks at the antique bar are perfect and the food is fine, taking in consideration that you are in a province of Cuba. The experience is highly recomendable.

Room Tip: The junior suites are worth it, as the normal rooms dont have real windows, altough they go to the p...

Beautifully restored historic hotel in the lievey small city of Matanzas. Nice, quiet rooms, well equipped, a great restaurant with surprisingly high food quality, a very nice bar with yummy cocktails. All of this paired with an extremely friendly staff. And a good breakfast. Matanzas is real Cuba, friendly and un-touristic. Enjoy!

Hotel Velasco fronts the main plaza in Matanzas, Cuba, and serves the best coffee in town! The colonial style Hotel has maintained its character, with beautiful wood and etched glass features at the bar, restaurant and reception. The coffee is the best in town and served with style! Huge marble columns adorn the spacious lobby which seems always cool and airy even on the hottest day!

Hotel Velasco in Matanzas is like out of a dream, or from a Latin American "Telenovela". A truely fascinating place, splendid, marvilhous, colonial, rich architecture. Each detail designed and produced with love and attention, from the chairs to the bar, from the plates to the entrance signs. (There must have been spend quite some money here.)
But the problem, is the Cuba-typical unfriendly treatment by parts of the staff (with exeption of the cleaning staff). The welcome was rather unwelcoming, people were not too interested, breakfast so lala. And if you have to complain about anything (the ridiculously expensive internet, which doesnt work, for example) than nobody helps, or at least tries to.
In any case, if you dont mind the "but", than it is a great place for one or two nights or so. The more expensive rooms have a real balcony and window. The smaller ones some window "the maintenance department will open" - in other words: expect none.

I spent 2 nights in Hotel Velasco. In fact, this is the only "hotel" in this city. At first, I tried to find a hostal recommended by Lonely Plantet. However, I could not find one since they were all full. Those hostals charge 25CUC but without breakfast. Finally, I found this hotel, just over 40 CUC, with very good breakfast. The location of this hotel can't be beaten. It's located in the center of the city and closed to everything, breutiful beautiful building. The service was also excellent, especially the bar and the restruant.

We spent 2 nights in Hotel Velasco. Very friendly staff, ready to satisfy all your wishes. The standard rooms are quite small and, at least 2 of the rooms we saw, have very high windows that allow little light into the room. However, this is a historical building and the renovations were done according to the original architecture and style - so if you would rather have more light, choose one of the junior suites. The bathrooms are small, but nice and clean. The hotel is extremely clean. Breakfast consists of fresh fruit, eggs, toast and jam, croissants, and tea or coffee. The restaurant offered us two of the best meals of our trip, so we highly recommend it.

Room Tip: The rooms facing the park are bigger and have bigger windows. However, they face one of the main str...

We took the bus from Varadero because our server told us that we should visit Matanzas. The town is very busy and most tourists just pass through on their way to Havana.
While we didn't stay overnight in this Hotel we were tempted.
It has only been open three years and it has been restored beautifully.
We had one of the best meals that we ate in Cuba here. Fish and perfectly cooked}
We were allowed to wander around the hotel and viewed a suite on the first floor which was charming clean and good sized.
The public area and Lobby was cool and reminded me of old classy 20th century buildings seen in movies.
We will definitely book a room here on our next visit to Cuba.
There are 17 rooms and the Hotel is situated right in the center of the town. The eclectic architectural features of this place , along with its super friendly staff make this a must see destination.
Varadero beaches are about 15 miles from Matanzas.
