“Luxury beyond expectations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2012

A few short days available, we chose the Grand as we have experienced this resort before, it was great the first time! This time it was incredible, Oceanfront room, perfect choice, beach great, service at this facility is impecable, the entire staff is at your service and does a wonderful job. If you need a ride to anywhere in this complex, it is just a phone call away and no long wait, 5 min. was the longest wait and normally less than 2!!! Unbelievable choices of food either at the Italian, Gourmet or most everyones Favorite Tony's for steak & lobster! I highly recommend this adults only all-inclusive resort!

Room Tip: Oceanfront will not disappoint you

Hello! We are a Canadian family of 4 with down to earth needs & expectations when we travel. We are not afraid of saying hello & thankyou, as well as giving good tips to people who work hard to make our vacation a very special memory. We have tried the Beaches Resort in Turks & Caicos, Majestic Colonial in Punta Cana & Barcelo Maya Palace Deluxe in Riviera Maya.
In short, I was at the Iberostar Paraiso Maya for one week with my wife & 18 year old daughter. We upgraded for the second week to the Grand Hotel because my 20 year old daughter was coming to join us. I will describe the Maya, then the Grand Hotel & finish with comparing the two complexes.
First of all, the Iberostar complex has 5 resorts, (Del Mar, Beach, Lindo, Maya & the Grand).
The Maya has very beautiful & clean grounds, as well as the other resorts. They are all different in waterways, decorations, hallways, swimming pools, etc. We found it to be somewhat difficult to learn our way around the resort for the first three days. The room service with the maids is without flaw as is for the refurbishment of the room fridge for drinks & water. The a la carte restaurants are all very good & the service is just as good.(we tried the french, japanese, italian, steakhouse, seafood). The buffet restaurants for breakfast & lunch that we tried were similar throughout the complex & we were deceived by the choices of food & lack of cooking stations for eggs & pastas (given as examples). Some buffets had almost on the spot waiters with water or drinks & and some were dissapointing. (got up one time and left after waiting exactly 12 minutes at a table. Were in no hurry during our vacation, but felt left out). No buffet or a la carte restaurant has a view of the ocean or beach. They are all separated by a marsh with boardwalks to the beach. (except for the Grand Hotel). These are the main reasons why we upgraded to the Grand Resort). The Grand Hotel is like being on another planet for a full 7 days. The service is crazy, like top notch & better. We are greeted with champagne and an exotic drink. A 24 hour butler presents himself to us and then takes us to meet our concierge. Its heaven from here to the end of our vacation. Cart service at will to bring us to & from the other resorts. Butler service for drinks or food at the beach or pool side every 10 minutes or so. No cards for towels either. You want to change pillows or have your bath at the room prepared, just call the butler service.
A la carte restaurant service is A-1 & flawless. Food is great and alot of attention is given in decorating our plates by the cooks & waiters almost change your knife & fork every time you take a bite. Refills of wine and water after almost every sip of the glass. Managers keep on passing & ask if everything is ok. It goes on like this for the rest of the vacation. We will return for sure.
Last year we did the Barcelo complexe for 2 weeks in July. (Beach, Caribe, Colonial, Tropical & Maya Palace Deluxe). We stayed at the Maya Palace Deluxe. Great room service from the maids, and waiter service at the buffets & a la carte restaurants was without flaw. Breakfast buffets & lunch buffets were bigger with more choices and more egg or pasta stations. All 5 resorts had an ocean & beach view restaurant. This is important to us. It was also easy to get around in this complex. All in all, we would return for sure.

Iberostar Grand Hotel:
Reception: 10/10
Room Service & butler: 11/10.
Breakfast, lunch, diner service: 11/10
Quality or choice of food at buffets: 10/10
Quality of food for a la carte restaurants:10/10
Quality of resort, pools & grounds:12/10 (all marble)
Photo shop organisation / pictures with animals: 7/10
Adult only resort: yes

Barcelo Maya Palace Deluxe:
Reception: 10/10
Room Service: 10/10.
Breakfast, lunch, diner service: 10/10
Quality or choice of food at buffets: 11/10
Quality of food for a la carte restaurants:10/10
Quality of resort, pools & grounds:10/10
Photo shop organisation / pictures with animals: 10/10
Adult only resort: no, but has adults only pool

All in all, these 2 high qaulity resorts are pretty well on the same level, but still give us a different experience depending on the the fact that one is adults only, and the other not. If i were to send someone to one of these resorts, i would say start with the Barcelo Maya Palace Deluxe for really good food & service in a family oriented resort and then upgrade to the Grand Hotel for refinement & no kids.

Iberostar Grand Paraiso offers a nice holiday and we enjoyed it but we feel like we overpaid. It is not "5 star" nice at any level. The buildings and rooms are clean but definitely need refreshing. Service is good but staff does not seem all that interested in their guests. The food is good but not great. As the resort was only filled to half capacity during our stay, only half the restaurants were available for evening seating. "Average" service levels, limited choice of restaurants and limited seating hours is not something that you want to deal with at a "Grand Paraiso" price point. The main bar is disappointing. It is far from the pool area and uninviting. I would expect it to be more centrally located, a hub of activity, given that the club is adults-only. The beach and pool area are beautiful. That part was definitely "5 star". To recap: we had a nice trip, the beach was beautiful and relaxing but it was not worth the price we paid and we would not go back a second time. For equal dollars, we will give another "all inclusive" a try. A true "5 star" should make you feel WOW. This was not WOW, just a little better than some of the other 4 star Mexican resorts that we have been to.

Room Tip: We chose a beach front room. The sea breeze and view was worth the extra cost. We were also on the s...

It is a late review but I thought I should share it. We spent the chrismas week there. It is a beautiful, elegant, spectacular, and spotless resort. They serve premium drinks which is a big plus. The food is also great. There is no early morning fight for beach beds and you always find one. This is a resort that you never forget! We will go back there.

My husband and I stayed here a few years ago and this resort was amazing!! I can not wait until we go back in September to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. I can not think of a better place to relax and celebrate. We have stayed at several AI resorts and this by far has been the best. I will make sure I write a more detailed review upon our return. I am sure it will be another 5 star vacation with great memories at a beautiful resort.

I am quite late in writing this (we stayed at this property for the 3rd time Jan. 21-28'12). However there are no changes to my earlier reviews - this resort is just as fabulous as ever, all food/drinks, service, room and the property are consistently excellent. BUT because the bar has been set so high, as my husband and I look at planning our next winter getaway we are stuck. In speaking with others who have travelled in the Caribbean and while doing our own online searches, other properties are not just measuring up for the value and service of The Grand. Do you return to The Grand assured of a wonderful vacation or chance it and try someone new (and spend your whole vacation comparing it to The Grand?). Friends of ours who have also vacationed here with us are having the same dilemma. We’ve stayed at other places in the Caribbean in the past, but have spent our last 7 winter vacations at the Lindo, Maya and The Grand.

We have been visiting the Mexican Yucatan for app 30 years. We even got married at an A I C in Cozumel before the really nice properties came along. We began staying at Iberostars as our children were growing up and found a place that felt safe to take kids and yet had activities to meet all members of our family. In the last few years as our children have matured we wanted the Iberostar feeling but more adult focused. The Grand has Iberostar Grand really hit the sweet spot for us. The moment we arrived there is this atmosphere set by the bellmen (Ricardo is really special. Great sense of humor!) that we are welcomed. The front desk clerks have recieved our history and knew we have stayed with them before. We were met by Saray (Sa rai) immediately upon walking to the front desk. She welcomed "us back". We were assigned a great room we were told due to years of staying with Iberostar.
Once we arrived by bellman in a smooth glof cart to our wing near the beach we recieved our 2nd round of welcome drinks! Our personal butlers met us too at this point and very quickly upon settlling in our room received a visit from Leo the butler to go over our wish list of adult drinks and pillows that we wanted for the week! It would not be long before my favorite beverages and my wifes pillow requests were met. Here is a suggestion for your dinner meals: write a few days ahead of arrival and request the alacart restaurants you prefer. I had written ahead for the first couple of nights and my requests were waiting for us on our 1st evening.
Toni s surf and turf is a steak house and is Very popular. It is very good! Filets and lobster are on the menu along with other nice choices such as lamb chops. I highly recommend Toni s! Over the week we ate at several alacart set downs: Haiku Japanese tepenyaki good. Didnt try Italian but heard it was good as well. There is a Continental alacart that many we talked to enjoyed but we didnt try it either. Wed evening is dinner under the stars at the buffet restuarant. It was a very nice affair! Live music and cusine from an international perspective. Friday night is Italian buffet as well too and we went back to Toni s but many said it was an enjoyable experience as well.
Breakfast and lunch are buffets and are quite good with many choices. You will meet a wonderful young lady: Olivia who will prepare you an egg or omelet any way you want it. One gentleman we met requested habaneros in his ometlet! So pretty much what ever you want if they have the resources you can have it prepared! We really liked one waiter in particular during lunch and breakfast (Manuel) Lunch is special as well: Generally someone was preparing lbster grilled at most lunches along with burgers, chicken, lamb chops, and sometimes steak. Each lunch day was a theme such as Itlaian or mexican. Great soups most days. Fresh guacamole, pico de gio, shrimp salads etc. Over all the meals all day long were top notch and delisious and way above what we have had at other A I Cs! Most of our wait staff and cooks and bellman are working for small salaries compared to the US and Europe. We always take a sum of 1 dollar and 5 dollar bills to had out to the maids bellmen waiters and speciality cooks while we are there for the week.
Most activities during the day center around the activities pool. ( There are 2 other pools that are: 1 for relaxing and quiet and 2 in door and more focused on exerzise.) You will meet during your day at the activity pool the Star Friends which are a special part of what makes Iberostar unique! At the Grand there are 6 of these young high energy personel from Mexico and some from other countries. They are great to interact with and provide a lot of fun activity if you choose to join an activity. (Your Choice) I did some such as ping pong and my wife joined in on some pool activities. By the way there are cheap prizes to winners of most of these games! They are amazing people: They knew many of the guests names if they participated in a few of the games.
Entertainment in the evenings is also somewhat above what we have experienced at most other A I Cs in the Caribbean. Each evening is a different theme. some we enjoyed more than others but all we saw were well done and for the most part enjoyable. (We didnt care much for the Friday evening Pre Columbian dancing show but maybe other do?)
A few items that I dont know where to plug them in at: The Lobby bar is both beautiful (Floor is an unbelievable craved granite of martini glasses) the Bartender Humberto is extemely good and will remember your drink from the night before unless like my wife who kept changing her drink each evening! The internet service for such a great property is really slow. We didnt bring a computer but those who did said service was only available in lobby and buffet area.
Adult beverages were a pretty good selection: Johnny walker red and Black, not many single malt choices, some US Whiskeys domistic wine choices for the most part. choose carefully: some were rather good some ...Not so much! And of course great Mexican beer choices! Try the Superior. Use to be #1 several years ago and was taken over by Carona app 20 years ago due to advertizing and branding ..not flavor!
Over all the Grand is a great vacation destination. Great staff, beautiful property. Its just a perfect place to relax and enjoy yourselfs for a few days!
