“Best all-inclusive yet!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2009

My boyfriend and I stayed at El Dorado Royale for a week in December 2008. Not only was the weather beautiful at the time, but our hotel was gorgeous! We had an actual ocean front room, just a couple hundred feet from the beach, which was very private- had a walk up entrance. Our room was equally as beautiful with a huge four-poster king bed, a jacuzzi in the room with a window that opened right up to the ocean view, a large balcony, very large rain-shower. It is also all inclusive and gourmet exclusive-the food was nothing less than gourmet in presentation and taste. No reservations required, extremely friendly staff who make you feel as if you are the only one who matters. This resort had great bars, many swim up bars, along with waiter service while you are on the beach. Watersports and horseback riding are an additional charge, but are right on the site. Great night-time entertainment and lounge bars. First class!

My boyfriend and I stayed here for a 2 week holiday last July and as it was our first time to Mexico and our first all -Inclusive ( something I have always avoided purposefully due to the mass-buffet, quantity not quality, type experience it often seems to lead to) I didnt have any preconceptions. However, as soon as we arrived and were greeted with champagne in the beautiful lobby, before being taken through the lush grounds to our room, I knew we'd made the right choice.
We stayed in a ground floor jacuzzi suite rather than a Casita suite but given the option to upgrade, I honestly didn't want to leave our room which I felt was more than luxurious enough. The bed was huge and incredibly comfortable and the room was always kept immaculately clean throughout our stay, with the mini bar being restocked to our liking with more of the drinks we preferred, simply by asking the staff who were always more than willing to accomodate our every request. I absolutely loved the fresh petals and towel art that the maid left in our room every day, it was such a throughtful touch! And of course, being able to relax with a cocktail in the jacuzzi at the end of the day was bliss.
The food and drink at every restaurant was superb. Even after 2 weeks of having world class standard 3 course meals every night, we were still blown away every time by the discreet and professional service of the waiting staff and the beautifully presented and gourmet standard of all the dishes. We tried every restaurant and loved them all and we are by no means easy people to please. Living in London and having dined in some of the best Michelen starred restaurants, we know good food, and I can honestly say the El Dorado competes with them.
The cocktails in all the bars were also amazing, I had a fair share a Mango Daquiries at the swim up bar, that was a nice facility that we maybe used too much on some days!
The resort never felt crowded, it always seemed intimate and romantic with staff always smiling and saying hello whenever they pass. We never had a problem getting a large cabana beach bed and loved how well spaced they were, it always felt very private. Even the small touches like the soft music they pipe through in the grounds and the beach butler service make the whole experience so luxurious. We'd read reviews on Trip Advisor before we left complaining about the sand bags ruining the beach, don't listen, the sand and sea are still beautiful and the snorkelling along the shoreline is great, so many bright blue and yellow fish.
We took the opportunity to go on a few trips, including Playa Del Carmen at night, shopping in Cancun, swimming with dolphins, Xel Ha and the ruins at Tulum. Ive always wanted to swim with dolphins so that was incredible, and Xel Ha and Tulum are a must!
We had a perfect holiday and can't fault El Dorado, we met a lot of honeymooning couples and agreed that it would be the most incredible honeymoon destination. Can't recommend this place highly enough.

Just a quick review.
Great resort for honeymooners! They make you feel really special. MUST book the Casitas.. they give you that lil bit extra.

Yes the sandbags on the beach are ucky, but they are there for a reason. Unfortunately when were there in rained for 3 days. and we were only there for 7.
BUT when it was sunny it was fantastic. When it wasnt it was still perfect for soaking in the Jacuzzi and gazing out the window with a glass of champage!

The restaurants are good but a lil too fancy for me. LOVED the room service breakfast french toast with almonds. YUMMY!

I had no problems getting a cabana by the beach in our section, just wake up early and put your shoes on it. There really was plenty of cabanas for each section so you don't HAVE to do that. im just nutty about the beach!

All in all great resort, just wish it had been sunnier!

oh and almost forgot, massages over the ocean - FANTASTIC!

We were at the resort for two full weeks. What a fantastic place. The rooms are beautiful and well kept. The staff is simply wonderful...kind, attentive and friendly. Best service I've seen yet. The food is very well done (with the exception of coffee, yeah...Canadian breakfast coffee is very different from Mexican breakfast coffee). We spent some time touring, a lot of beach time. Partying in the evening. The entertainment was very good. We did a lot of dancing :). The beach wasn't great, pretty rocky but we went to enjoy the sun, not to swim.

We were there on our honeymoon and I would go back there tomorrow if I could.
The food was the best, a la carte at every meal and the waiters were brilliant, helping you to decide what to have if there was anything you were unsure about.
The resort was all perfect as you can see from the pictures, nothing more to be said, not a thing to complain about.
Finally our consierge's Juan Carlos and Eddy were brilliant, they couldn't do any more for us, booking our evening meal times, aromatherapy in the room in the evening, any questions they were there to sort it out.

Highly recommended

traveled here on honeymoon mid march. We have both worked within hotels and bars on a management level and we are a couple of years shy of 30, so after spending four thousand on a standard suit we did expect our monies worth. I have previously visited iberostar tucan resort and believed that since this was a hell of alot more money and a star up that this would be even more amazing.
the service from the waiting staff varies, breakfast and lunch service was usually poor but its a different story for dinner even if its the same waiter (must be when they make their tips, eh?) the room was nice, expected some special touch for our honeymoon there wasnt any as we went away 30 days after we got married and there was no way we were paying nearly 100 quid for dinner on the beach.
the food was great, the chefs know how to cook, there is no doubt about it.. but i would avoid the health bar and the pizza bar, if you are lucky to get what you order its sadly not worth the wait.
The gourme choice, as nice as it is lunch an dinner, sadly becomes too much after a week and you will find yourself lusting after a big tub of ice cream and a spoon or a massive bowl of veg (dishes are very heavy on the protien) i found it strange that a spa resort didnt provide healthy , filling options infact i came home with a very irritable stomach that im still recieving tests for.

the pool facilities were very very disappointing, if you want to pay a couple of thousand more you can update to castia's it would seem that even the sand over that area is less corse and there are generally empty sun loungers, beach loungers and hamocks galore...which you cant touch if you didnt pay the extra. So the pool area, people put their towels down on the sun beds at 6am then reappear at 10 to make use of them despite the hotels policy that if you leave your property for more than 45 mins it will be removed...doesnt happen. and what makes it worse is the fact that everyone doing this claims not just the large sunbed but two loungers either side!! you want to go swimming? ditch that idea unless you like cold pools are are happy to stay from 6am onwards as its not unusual for guests to steal each others spaces.
The other thing we did notice is that there are loads of broken tiles in the pool especially the under cover one.

enteratinment: when we went in march it was awful, its mainly a poor covers band and only the over 50's seemed to find any appeal in it. If not the band it was dancers.

good points:
the oriental restaurant was really good, cant fault the sushi! (maybe i should wait for the test results first though but it was excellent)
its adults only
the house wines were really good, no need to pay extra for a wine on the menue!
the waiter service for dinner was generally what you would expect for a 4 star in the uk
24 hour room service
friendly staff
the salt water pool has fish in it (apparently there are also barracuda in there)

bad points:
waiter service was inconsistant which is a shame
the whirlpool bath 1. noisy 2. pretty old, our plug didnt work and needed to refill after a few mins
there is the hard sell from the concierge, just stay clear if your not interested, they arent there for any other reason
the price of the spa treatments and any extras at the resort are rediculous which is a shame
the lack of sun loungers and people hogging the few that are provided
the brocher also fails to point out that the majority of all the pools and bars listed are actually in the casita area and are small and identical, again if you arent paying the extra, no sun lounger for you.

conclusion? really dont think its worth the money, you can get far better for your money else where in mexico and wouldn't go back in all honesty.

Like others have reported, after reading the negative reviews for several months we wondered if we made a mistake by choosing this resort. However, from the moment we stepped in to the resort we realized that we had in fact made the right choice. Express check in was quick as it should be. We stayed for 10 nights in a Jr. Jacuzzi ocean view and enjoyed every moment we had at the resort. The food was not only wonderful but plenty as well. My husband is over 6' tall and 240 lbs.and he was completely satisfied. The service can't be beaten. Food and drinks are always served from the correct side. Even though it is an all inclusive and it is stated that tips are included in the price, we did tip because we felt that the workers were deserving. We never had the impressio that anyone was waiting for a tip rather that they were excited when they noticed that a tip had been left. Would also highly recommend the couples massage. If a day trip is planned would recommend Lomas. We prearranged our airport transfer with them as well and booked our excursions with Joaquim and Pacco from Lomas once we got there.
We knew not to expect much of the beach and did not care. It is nice that this is strictly an adults only resort and we did not have to put up with screaming children and mothers/fathers. On the other hand, we did find some groups of adults to be rather loud and abnoxious with spilling their drinks and dropping cigarette butts and you can't fault the resort for that. The grounds are absolutely beautiful and the workers are continually maintaining them. We do plan to return...maybe next year.
