“Uber Relaxation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2014

We just returned from our second trip (in as many years) to El Dorado Royale. We returned to the resort this year because we were so pleased with the resort last year. We again were more than satisfied with all amenities. The grounds are beautiful, the staff very, very friendly, and the accommodations always clean and fresh. The only complaint is that it's getting as hard to get chairs on the beach as it is at the pool. Very frustrating to see pool chairs "reserved" all day with no one sitting in them. Likely a problem at any resort. WIFI access is expensive where it's free at other resorts in the area. All this said, we will definitely be returning to El Dorado.

Room Tip: If you reserve a junior suite with a swim up option, you'll always have a pool chair (and privac...

All the staff were exceptional and in keeping with the theme of the resort “Excellente”, and in our words Mucho Excellente!!!

We would like to make special mention, and thank; Victor our server at Jo-Jo’s Restaurant (one of the best servers I have ever seen anywhere in the world), Armin our server at the Italian Restaurant (great guy and wonderful sense of humour), Verna our server at the Martini Bar (keep smiling sweat heart, its contagious), Marco our Personal Concierge and his team mates (my apologies, I am not 100% sure of his name, I think/hope it was George) and Adeil (spelling?) our Las Fuentes Pool bartender/server. Not only are you a great bartender/server, we thank you Doctor for helping our friend out with some much needed sunburn advice.

We had two rooms in the 600 block. Both rooms were immaculate, well stocked and well taken care each day. For us, the 600 block was very convenient to the beach, pools, restaurants, and bars.

The grounds were immaculate, all the pools, restaurants, bars, washrooms, etc. were all immaculate.

We did not have the opportunity to dine at every restaurant for every seating, but we were able to make it to; Jo-Jo’s for lunch and dinner, La Isla for breakfast, D’Italia for dinner, Kampai for dinner, Fuentes for dinner, El Rincon for dinner, La Cabaña Pizzeria for lunch, and our traveling companions had breakfast at Cocotal our final day. They were all excellent, service was great, and I would return to all of them again. Unfortunately we were not able to get a reservation for Santa Fe during our stay even though we made our dinner reservations on our first full day at the resort.

There are only two negatives about this resort; one is the ocean front/beach. I believe they lost their natural reef and a lot of beach to a hurricane a number of years ago. They have since installed (what they call) artificial reefs (more like ugly monster sand bags) in order to protect what they have left and re-build their beach. It did make it difficult to swim in the ocean and walk the beach. The other negative is the golf carts. The resort covers a lot of ground and as such they use golf carts to get around. I felt like I was always stepping aside along the pathways in order for a golf cart to pass.

All in all, a wonderful vacation and we will certainly return another time.

Thanks again to all the staff at the El Dorado Royale.

Dear Ian Macka,
Thank you for reviewing your recent stay here at El Dorado Royale. It was terrific to read that you felt it we are an amazing property and truly appreciated the constructive feedback from our staff they will be happy to know that you have mentioned them, they will be considered under our diamond staff.
Unfortunately we are sad to read that the beach did not reached your expectations. We have had many storms come throughout the years we are in constant work of maintaining the sand the best we can. By installing an artificial reef system is part of this work, our arduous work will continue.

We are grateful for your contribution with your comments, regarding the golf carts a staff board meeting has been held were major new implements will be taking place very shortly.

Once again thank you for your review we hope to see back soon.

Check in was quick and smooth, We checked in early with no problem and were immediately driven to our room with our luggage. The room was spacious and very clean (entire resort was spotless). The staff could not have been more accomadating. Every where we went we were
treated like royalty. Restaurants were fantastic, portions were not huge but you can order as many items as you like ( this was a great way to try many of their cullinary delights). The only food item I did not care for was the pizza but others semed to like it. Drinks were also wonderful
most top shelf brands available (Grey goose vodka, Don Julio tequilla). Pools were clean and there are too many to list, some quiet, some with music and activities. Loungers and beds fill up early but you can always find somewhere to lay out. Wait service by the pools and beach was also very good. We did hand out a few dollars in tips but never felt required to do so. We have been to many other all inclusive resorts and this was by far the best we have ever stayed at. We will definitely revisit Eldorado Royale as soon as we can

This was a great trip to the El Dorado Royale Casitas. Everything about it was awesome. Cesar who was our bartender at our swim up bar was the best. Daniel who was our butler for our area of casitas was also great. Spa is definitely a must. Food, staff and atmosphere 2nd to none. We will be going back. We were there from March 26th thru the 31st of 2014 and it was not long enough.

Room Tip: Casitas with a swim up pool and leads to a lazy river.

Prior to booking I the primary negative about the hotel was the lack of attentiveness from the staff. This couldn't have been further from the truth from the moment we arrived until the moment we were on the shuttle back to the airport.

- Staff was fantastic in all phases of our stay: attentive, friendly, accommodating - allowing us to relax during our stay. In many cases they remembered our names even during a casual stroll around the property.

- Grounds were very well manicured; clean and beautiful. Very visually appealing.

- Couples massage on the beach was amazing and highly recommended.

- Other vacationers were great - most we met were friendly, older (30+ ish) and there to have a good time without feeling like we were on spring break.

- Food was above average if not exceptional at most of the restaurants.

Overall our stay was very enjoyable and will, and have, recommend this resort to anyone who is planning a trip to the area.

We enjoyed our experience at El Dorado immensely; my first-time there, girlfriend's second. Resort satff were all very kind, pleasant, and helpful; they were able to accomodate our smallest request; some of the cleaning staff would leave animal figures fashioned out of towels on our bed.The grounds on the property were so beautiful and very scenic, with countless palm trees and beautiful flowers everywhere - a veritable paradise !!
We felt the food was sensational and gave us ample opportunity to try various restaurants and venues; we particularly enjoyed our romantic evening dinner on the beach. The Sky massage on the beach was also quite enjoyable.
The concierge stations are a great idea, as staff there were well-informed and very helpful. Lots of pools throughout the grounds to choose from. We enjoyed our tour of the greenhouse with our guide Daniel, who helped make it fun & interesting. Couldn't help but notice hardly any insects anywhere on the grounds.
Highly recommend your resort to anyone !!!

ONLY negative was we felt there was poor selection of mid-range priced Pinot Grigio, Merlot, and Cabernet wines. Having a bit more varied beer selection in beer would be appreciated: i.e., Beck's, Stella, Corona.

Room Tip: Ocean front rooms are quieter.

It truly pains me to write this review. I’ve put it off for a week now. But as this was my third visit to El Dorado Royale in four years, I feel I have to share. Warning, this review is long, but it’s thorough and addresses some of the common complaints that others post on TripAdvisor. In other words, it’s the only review you really need to read. ;-)

First, let me tell you from where this is coming. I travel with my boyfriend of seven years, we are in our 40s and 50s, we’re not big partiers or heavy drinkers but we like to have a good time. I am a vegetarian, he’s not, but we’re both healthy eaters. We’re from New York, we live on Long Island but visit NYC often. Our first El Dorado trip was in May 2011 where we stayed in a swim-up Casitas. Our second trip was in May 2012 and we stayed in the 4000 block, 3rd floor ocean view. This trip we stayed in the 600 block, 3rd floor garden view. That should give you a bit of a frame of reference.

So on our 3rd trip to El Dorado Royale: This was the first time our room was not immediately available. We arrived before 1pm, and they told us our room would be ready at 3pm. Anticipating that this might happen, we had packed our beach gear in an accessible place. So we changed into our suits, put our valuables in a small bag, left our luggage with the bellboys, and went to grab some food and some sun! (This is the way to go, btw. Make sure you can easily grab beach gear and be prepared to carry a bag to the pool or beach while you wait for your room. There’s no reason not to start your vacay just because your room isn’t ready.)

We were sipping drinks by the pool when we realized it was after 3pm, so we went to the lobby to finish our check in. It was a smooth process and we were soon whisked away by golf cart to our room, no. 626.

Room
The room was gorgeous! Having stayed in both a swim up casitas and in an ocean view room, I have to say this was our favorite. It was a recently renovated room with gorgeous bathroom, separate shower and toilet, and a great Jacuzzi tub that we made good use of. While the bed was a bit more firm than we’re used to, we both slept great. There was couch and ottoman, as well as the expected table with chairs. The view was mostly of the tops of palm trees, but you know what? It felt very private and we felt like we could sit peacefully on our balcony without being watched. If I had to complain it would be that the chairs on the balcony were awkward in the space.

Previous rooms: We first stayed in a swim up casitas, which was awesome. But very far away from all the restaurants and busy pools and entertainment. Plus we rarely used the swim up. So we told ourselves next time we’ll stay in the regular part of the resort. Our next stay was in the 4000 block. Even with the ocean view, this was my least favorite room. It is very close to the Guacamayas Bar, which is where all the nightly entertainment is. Even though the entertainment is mostly over by 11 or 12, the loud music continues each night until 2am. I never once got a good night’s sleep in that room. The mornings with the beach view were gorgeous tho. If you’re a heavy sleeper or you stay out till 2am anyway, then you won’t mind this section. Its close to everything like restaurants, pools, bars, etc. When we stayed in May of 2012, it hadn’t been updated.

Pools
There are many pools at El Dorado, but the two most popular are La Isla pool where the party is, and the Fuentes pool where people are relaxing and swimming lazily to and from the bar. There are other, smaller pools, but you rarely see anyone in them. And there are the casitas pools for casitas people only. There are bars at all the pools, but the two big ones are by far the most popular. Good luck finding a chair or a bed, as others have posted. You really do have to get up early to throw some towels and a book on one of the beds or a couple of chairs or you won’t have one come 10am. The signs say they remove stuff that’s left there, but it’s not true. People hoard beds all day. When the resort isn’t at full capacity it’s a bit easier, but when it’s full, you’ll be lucky to find an empty bed or two chairs by 8am. It’s easier to find a bed on the beach, but not much.

There’s also a natural salt-water pool, but I have never seen anything but flies and bees near it. It’s a great idea, but no one swims in it. They should probably close this one down and gain back some more usable beach.

One more thing: my boyfriend kept complaining about the over-chlorinating of the pool. I think it’s a necessary evil when you have that many bodies in a still pool of water, but his eyes burned for hours after swimming. So I recommend keeping your eyes closed when you swim. (He likes to swim laps for exercise.)

Beach
Oh, the beach. It’s all true. There are many rocky parts of the beach. They do have giant, black sandbags in the water to prevent further erosion. It’s all very natural. What else can they do? The plus is that the black sandbags have created a natural reef and if you bring a snorkel and mask, you can see some awesome fish up close! Just also be sure to bring water shoes. You could really cut yourself. There are nice areas that are more sandy, but it’s hit or miss. Just be careful. The ocean water is still gorgeous. I’ve heard other resort beaches are better, though.

Restaurants
They have gotten more strict with the dress code. Where you used to be able to sit at La Cabana with a swim suit and cover up, the men now need sleeved shirts. (Last time we were there, the other restaurants required men to wear collared shirts.) The dress code now applies to all restaurants. While I definitely agree that dress codes are in order, for La Cabana and Jo Jos, which are both pool and beach-side lunch eateries, you should be able to be less covered up. After all, the women are allowed to wear just a thin or very short cover up, why should men be required to wear sleeves? It’s hot. Let them wear tank tops. La Cabana is closed for dinner, but I can see the need for a dress code at Jo Jo’s for dinner. Give us a break at lunch.

Needing reservations has changed as well. When you’re a Casitas guest, you can get a reservation pretty much without issue. When you’re a regular guest, you have to call days, yes DAYS in advance to get a reservation at both Fuentes and Santa Fe Grill. We’ve been to Fuentes on previous visits when it was a buffet and we loved it. Now it seems it is dinner theater every night (closed on Sundays) and requires a reservation. We only stayed 4 days, called on the first day, and did not get a reservation. We were able to get a reservation at their newest restaurant, Santa Fe Grill, on our last day, and at 9pm.

Ah, the restaurant wait times. So here’s the thing. You will be told there’s a wait at nearly every restaurant, and at every meal. They seem to say it’s 20 minutes by default, sometimes longer, but we never waited more than ten or fifteen minutes. And another thing, you will see many empty tables. This is different than in past visits. We never waited before. And we never saw so many empty tables. We haven’t figured this out. Why so many empty tables but such long wait times? You wait to be seated and then wait for your food. It wasn’t always this way. Are they understaffed? I just don’t know.

The newer restaurants are Rincon and Santa Fe. Okay, so we loved Rincon. It’s tucked behind Fuentes and it’s easy to miss — but don’t! It was one of the best for dinner. Now for Santa Fe: um, we were so confused! No one told us it was a tasting restaurant, meaning, you get a whole bunch of mini appetizers before your meal comes. This was one where we had a long-awaited reservation, and it’s on the outskirts of the casitas so it’s a FAR walk. We were seated right way and the restaurant was more than half empty. Yet, it took a very long time for anyone to come and take our order. In fact, it took forever for someone to give us menus. We finally ordered, but then our server began bringing out very random dishes, including freshly ground salt, which came with nothing to scoop or serve it with. We never quite figured out what that was all about. After about the fourth round of random appetizers (which ranged from savory watermelon salad to octopus — my BF said the octopus was gross), we got the food we ordered. None of the food was amazing; it was just okay. Not sure it was worth all the pomp and circumstance, or the wait. (Please keep in mind I’m a vegetarian.) The other restaurants are great. We loved Cocotal and La Isla. We didn’t go to D’Italia this time, but we did on previous visits. Overall I’m confused about why threre’s not more authentic Mexican food. I mean, I’m in Mexico, I’d like to taste more of the local cuisine.

A word about portion size. You have no doubt read that people complain about the small portions of food at El Dorado. While the appetizers are tiny (and I do mean laughably tiny — like one bite), each meal is usually four courses. And you can order as much as you like. I honestly don’t understand the complaining. We left each of our meals stuffed to the gills! There is so much food we feel like dieting for days after we come home. Not to mention all the mid-day snacks and drinks. We’re talking 3,000 calorie days, every day. There is no way you could be hungry, but in case you are, there’s also room service well into the night. The portion sizes are perfectly respectable, IMO.

Other stuff
A word about drinks. They have definitely cut back on alcohol. I usually have a buzz after one glass of wine, but after three pool-side drinks I didn’t feel a thing. This is something I’ve read complaints about before, and in previous visits I didn’t agree. This time, the drinks were VERY light on alcohol, even I couldn’t taste the alcohol. I heard people say you had to tip the bartenders to get a decent amount of alcohol in your drinks. We always tip but still, most were just sweet, icy drinks. I felt like the only real alcohol I had was the wine at dinner. Four days in Mexico and barely a buzz. Maybe I didn’t order the right drinks. It’s possible, I’m not much of a drinker.

A word about the staff. The staff at El Dorado Royale is second to none. They are the friendliest, nicest, most accommodating people I’ve ever met. You’re greeted with a smile and an “hola!” at least a dozen times per day. I’ve read about staff at other resorts who are rude or not accommodating. Not at El Dorado. They are amazing. The understaffing at the restaurants is not their fault, nor is the light alcohol use. These are no doubt decisions that come down from management, yet the staff still manage to smile and greet you in a friendly way. I’ve also read several TripAdvisor reviews where people are reporting thefts in their rooms. To be quite honest, my boyfriend and I never even used the safe. We never had anything stolen. We also don’t travel with expensive jewelry or large sums of cash.

Tipping. For those of you who are new to this, tips are expected, and usually warranted. Before El Dorado we took a trip to a Sandals where tipping is not allowed. Definitely bring $1s and $5s with you for tips. I don’t know about other currencies, but US Dollars were widely accepted.

Entertainment and smoking. Can I just tell you how much I love the entertainment at El Dorado Royale? It’s so much fun. My favorite is El Dorado Idol, which only happens once per week. Currently on Saturday nights. The entertainment is always good. (I’m not personally a fan of casino night.) My biggest complaint is that people can smoke. And even though it’s outside, with the thatched roof, the room stays stuffy and the air doesn’t circulate. Coming from the states, particularly New York where you can’t smoke in public anywhere anymore, it’s hard to sit next to the smoke. People can also smoke by the pool, which is kind of a bummer when you’re relaxing and then are suddenly accosted by second hand smoke. But it’s minimal.

The golf carts. Yes, they are constantly coming up behind you and you have to move to the side. But it’s not that big a deal, only mildly annoying. And they’re nice to have around when you have a long walk and aren’t in the mood for a stroll. Don’t bother waiting at the “bus stops.” The carts never stop there and the clocks mean nothing. Just try to find one or flag one down, it’s your best bet. (Or maybe that’s the New Yorker in me talking.)

I warned you this was long. Are you still reading? I will tell you this. We love El Dorado Royale. And we’ve met people who were there for their fifth, seventh, and fifteenth visit to this resort. But things have changed. It needs to be easier to get a meal and lunchtime needs to be more casual. I used to love the guacamole and pico de gallo at every meal, but it has gotten difficult to find. It’s also hard to remember which restaurant is open for which meal. And you kind of want to know where you’re headed ahead of time because the resort is SPRAWLING and you’ll be walking a lot. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing because you’ll also be consuming ridiculous amounts of food and drink. And it needs to be easier to get a chair or bed by the pool. BUT! And here’s the but, while we love El Dorado, the whole restaurant thing with the frustrating reservations, the wait times, the dress code, it just added a little extra rigmarole to what is supposed to be a relaxing vacation. So we’re thinking we’re going to try the Excellence on our next trip to Mexico. It’s hard for me to even say it because El Dorado feels like home, but I feel like the things that have slipped make us want to try something new. Excellence gets better TripAdvisor reviews on everything. And we met two women on our shuttle who were going there because everyone they knew had raved about it.

We still love you El Dorado Royale. Please fix the whole restaurant thing so we can come back… after we try out Excellence.

Room Tip: Newly renovated rooms are beautiful, even garden or pool view. 600 block was nice and quiet.

Dear Jensearch.

First we want to thank you for taking the time writing and sharing your wonderful and detailed review of your recent stay at the El Dorado Royale, a Spa Resort by Karisma.

It was a real pleasure to welcome you back once again to enjoy another stay with us.

I am glad to know that we were able to exceed your expectations again in some points, but at the same time it is disappointing for us, that there were other aspects of the resort where you felt short of expectations during your stay, I would like you to know that we have taken note of all the comments mentioned with the , sun beds, drinks, liquors, the allocation of rooms and restaurant reservations as you have point out really valuable information where we are already working out something in order to avoid other guests have the same impression about us.

I am currently conducting a review about your comments to all the respective managers. Because as you know fulfilling all our guest full satisfaction is our main goal and your review helps out to achieve that goal.

Again, it was a great honor to host your holiday and I hope you give us the opportunity of hosting one or more of your coming trips to the Riviera Maya at your El Dorado Royale, a Spa Resort by Karisma, your Mexican Home.

Warmest regards.

Sincerely yours.
Paula Negrete
