“Great time!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2012

We stayed here in 2003 and thought it was nice then but it is even better now. We had a swim up suite and that is the way to go. They do have some construction now but it didn't bother us in anyway. That is to be completed by December with more swim ups which I am hoping they connect the existing lazy river with the new one so you can go throughout the entire resort. Very nice. Nice staff and doesn't beg for tips like other resorts do. We tipped and they were very grateful but we didn't feel obligated and got wonderful service with or without tipping. Would recommend this place to anyone!!!

Following a nice but lack-luster visit to the El Dorado Royal (EDR) in early 2011, we returned (now members) with modified expectations. What a difference two years makes! On every level, our expectations were exceeded. The staff was attentive, engaging, enthusiastic and efficient, the wine selection extensive (15 house wines alone) and exceptional, the food was succulent and of course the scenery was surreal. While there are still opportunities for improvement (when aren’t there), the overall experience was one that left us sorry to be leaving. We look forward to yet another visit very soon.

I will get the only thing I didn't like out of the way ... The beach is a little rocky for swimming, and the beach whales obstruct the view a touch. Swimming doesn't really happen ... wading in the water is fine ... snorkeling is good when the water isn't turbulent ... and laying on the beach is cool. I just wouldn't swim in it due to the nature of being in a coral area. This is why the location was a 4/5 instead of a 5.

Now that that's out of the way.

The food was the absolutely best thing about this trip. They refer to their style as 'Gourmet Inclusive', and each restaurant will have an a la carte menu during each meal. For breakfast, Cocotal (main lobby) and La Isla (main pool) has a buffet to accompany the plated portions.

Food highlights:

Jojo's (Beach) - Seared Rare Tuna appetizer - Peppery and Sweet ... and only a few bites
Kampai (Casitas) - Cold Cucumber and Mint Soup - Fantastically Refreshing
La Isla (Pool) - Beef Skewer entree - mellow and savory ... and a lot of beef

Overall, I don't think you can go wrong with anything.

The beer of choice for the resort is Dos Equis ... and that's all. Just be aware of that. There is a decent selection and some international brands. The Martini bar in the lobby has the best selection of included drinks, but that's a long walk for a Single Malt Scotch. They also had a better selection of Tequila ... and Jamison whiskey (personal favorite).

Otherwise, you need to really look at the bottles to know what you are getting ... and you have to request it. Rum was Morgans spiced, or Bacardi Dark/White ... Vodka had Smirnoff and Skyy ... You could have Jack Daniels if you wanted it.

Compared to previous trips, the liquor selection was good but not great since it was inconsistent.

Service was top notch. Everyone was overly helpful, and not expecting of a tip. We never had that awkward hesitation of someone with their hand out asking ... it was more of a surprise/reward for truly top notch service. If you do tip, 20 peso is pretty average ... or about $1 per person USD.

Rooms were clean, but lacked a few small areas. Paint was peeling off of some trim on the ceiling. The Shower door needed a new seal on the bottom to prevent escape, and was a little short (water over the top). I know we got the most basic room type, but attention to detail is key in what is listed as a 5 star resort.

Even in low season, the activities were in full swing. The activities pool, La Fluentes, had stuff going on every day. I played water polo 3 times ... good way to work the arms and beers off. Archery gives you a bit of a test. I watched people do the aqua arobics.

Location was fantastic. It's 20 minutes from the Cancun airport down Highway 307. However, if you want to do any excursions to Tulum, Coba, Xel Ha, or Chichen Itza ... you'll be the first on the bus in the morning, and last off at night. So expect a LONG day.

Even so, we did go do the 'Cancun Mayan Treasures' which was to Coba (2012 prophecy), a swim in a Cenotes, and a "Mayan village' visit. This took a full day, 7 am to 6:30 pm, but was well worth it. Swimming in an underground freshwater pool is fantastic, since it's quite cold compared to the resort pools.

Overall great resort.

Room Tip: I don't think there is a 'bad room' in this resort. Just know that if you are in the Ca...

From the moment we arrived at the El Dorado Royal we could feel the relaxation begin. They have world class restraunts and service. They remembered me by name in the main restraunt every time. All room requests were met in a timely fashion and the way they made up the room for honeymooners and couples was tre' romantique. The staff alway greeted us with smiles and seemed genuninely interested to meet any of requests. Love the personal concierge.

Room Tip: The casitas are incredible.

The hotel was excellent in almost every aspect from the welcome until the day of our departure.People must live in a bubble if they expect perfection.I find it difficult to believe that anybody could complain about this hotel, it was not perfect, but if you could not enjoy yourself here then their is something lacking in your makeup.
The grounds were idyllic ,the beach lovely, the food was about the best i've eaten with seven restaurants with food ranging from fine dining to fast food it catered for all tastes.
However the jewel in the crown were the staff always ready with a smile and a friendly 'ola',
they went to extraordanar
y lengths to make you feel welcome and to ensure you enjoyed yourselfs.
I would like to make a special mention of a few of these wonderful friendly people.

LA CABANA-- to ALFREDO,MIGUEL and ORLANDO thanks for the great service and the friendly words despite your heavy workload.

LA COCOTAL-- to CARLOS,LUIS and EFRAIN always willing to help in any way and very friendly people.
to ANANIAS a good singer and quite a character.
to ALEJANDRO the chef who cooked my omelettes every morning and always with a smile.

L'ITALIA VILLAS-- to MAURICE the ultimate professional and a thorough gentleman.

LA ISLA-- to REBECA who served our drinks at the pool we never ran dry ,thank you.

to--ALFONSO our shuttle driver who took us all over the grounds and always got us to our room safely, thank you for the journeys and the friendly words we exchanged on route.

A big thank you to all the people at the EL DORADO who helped make our stay quite exceptional.

Maybe I am becoming a hotel snob, but the resort isnt cheap. Paid extra for a seaside view and got a beautiful view of the Palm Trees out our window! Further, the room just plain smelled bad. Musty! I guess i would describe it this way, when you come home from a vacation and your clothes smell like they were wet for a week in your suitcase and you never wore them, there is something wrong. Let management know of the situation and there was no consideration to follow up. Bottom line is friendly staff, beautiful beach and fun times were had in spite of a terrible room experience. Oh and just so you are aware I am a travel professional so sorry to others who I may have given a thumbs up to on this place previously!

Room Tip: Stay elsewhere until they correct the problems with their rooms! I know there was a ton of construct...
