“Awesome Vacation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2013

We stayed at the Lindo in 2011 and were going to book it again this year. When we compared the price of the Lindo with the Maya, the Maya was cheaper because of a "kids stay free" promotion.

We stayed at the Maya from July 10 - 19 and it was awesome. The weather was hot but not overly hot, it drizzled once in a while and the ocean was amazing.

There are a lot of positives which have been mentioned many times before so read other reviews. I will however mention a few things that could be improved.

Upgrading to the Maya gave us access to a Maya only buffet at La Marina restaurant. This buffet was no where comparable to the main buffet at the Lindo. Food selection was limited, not overly hot and didn't seem to be replenished that often, as there weren't that many people eating there so you would see the same untouched item every time you went up to the buffet. It was quite disappointing so we ended up back at the Lindo buffet.

Another thing, that was not necessarily Maya related, was that while in the pool, near the central "hot" tubs, every once in a while a not so pleasant odor would make it's way to you. Don't know where it was coming from but was quite nasty.

It will now be harder to downgrade to the Lindo having had access to a few extras like the free internet at the Maya lobby, even though it was not that reliable but for the quick email, it served it's purpose. Also, the larger rooms were nice and the elevator in the building came in handy after a few mojitos :) We stayed in building 61 on the top floor with a pool view and it was perfect. Close to the pool and beach along with the breakfast and lunch buffet restaurant right next door.

Overall we had a great vacation and will probably return next year if we get the same promotion.

Dear guest,

First of all, we would like to thank you for choosing the Iberostar Paraiso Maya for your vacation destination. We are happy to know that you enjoyed your vacation with us and that you were able to take advantage of the activities as well as the other facilities offered at our resort.

Concerning our culinary offer, we are sorry we did not meet your expectations. Our Chef is always working on improving the different options offered at our buffets and A la Carte restaurants, by creating a menu that varies every day, as well as having a different international theme (Italian, oriental, and many others) every night. We will send him your review for his consideration. We would like to add that except for the Tapatio restaurant (buffet and also a la carte restaurant for Mayan guests for breakfast, lunch and dinner) all restaurants in the Paraíso Maya can only be used by their guests and guests from Grand Paraiso.

We apologize about the situation you described in the pool. Our Management and Maintenance Department are constantly working on areas to be improved and our facilities follow a maintenance standard roll in order to try to keep our areas impeccable, so this is something important they will need to take care of as soon as possible.

We are quite confident that you will be returning to our beautiful resort in the future and as such, we look forward to your next visit.

Kind regards,
Quality Manager

I have written a previous review of the Maya and after thoroughly searching the Caribbean, we made the decision to return again this August. I read the bad reviews of the Maya and cannot understand the expectations of people. I too have been to Sandals and to a few Iberostar's and must say I find the service at both very helpful and friendly. If you are traveling with family, this resort cannot be beat!

Looking forward to seeing all our friends at the Maya again!

Stayed here July 3rd through July 8th with the family in a Superior Junior Suite.
When we first arrived I will admit we were a bit overwhelmed with the size of the resort and had some trouble figuring out the best paths to our destinations. After the first day we managed to figure out the layout and it was all good after that
We have been to at least eight other all-inclusive resorts in the past and if you enjoy that kind of thing you will not be disappointed at the IBEROSTAR. Rooms are very clean and Housekeeping is organized and attentive. There is more than a handful l of restaurants to choose from. The good thing if you have any picky eaters is that weather you are in the Italian, Mexican, Seafood or Steakhouse restaurants there is always a large amount of buffet choices in addition to menu items.
The fun stuff:
There are bars EVERYWHERE on this resort, pool bars, free standing outdoor bars, and lobby bar, wait staff walking around taking orders. Bartenders and wait staff were happy and full of suggestions for mixed drinks.
There are also MANY pools on this property so it never feels over crowded for such a large place. The best one for us was the wave pool, located right next to an outdoor bar w/music and fun for the kids.
The resort is on the beach and a very short walk from the rear of the property. It is well maintained and lots of lounge chairs and umbrellas. I found the water to be somewhat rough during our stay but not dangerous. There were no big drop-offs even 40-50 yards out so good for wave jumping and body surfing.
We took a cab ride to Playa Del Carmen one evening and it was about $25 and 25 mins away. If you have never been there I recommend it. 5th Ave is loaded with shops, restaurants and bars. There are several taxi stands to get back to the hotel. We were there seven years ago and it has really evolved into a tourist friendly spot.
We did not take advantage of the nightly entertainment but there were theater shows as well as a few dance clubs on property.
There is a mall here as well, when you get rough the gated area there are two or three other IBEROSTAR resorts in that same spot, the mall sits right in the middle with a good amount of shops.
The Gym – Clean and lots of cardio and weight lifting equipment that is fairly new and in working order.
I noticed a 24 hour medical building on sight as well.
All in, a good place that I recommend.

Room Tip: Don't pay up for the superior jr. suite. Nothing special from what we can tell.

Wonderful vacation. I traveled with parents, inlaws and a 7 year old. Plenty of sun, beach and pool for everyone. We always had chairs in the shade by the pool or beach even though people did save them. Food at the buffets was good and always enough variety for everyone Even all the bacon we wanted. We had dinner at the different restaurants every night except for the french restaurant because no kids were allowed in this restaurant. The food was much better than the buffets. The restaurants also had enough variety for everyone and they also had there own buffet section for each restaurant. The only thing that I had an issue with on my whole vacation was that I had to wear pants to these restaurants. Men have to wear pants but woman could wear just about anything or the lack of anything they wanted. I didn't even bring any pants but the conceirge hooked me up that first night. I mean really a polo and shorts should be good enough to go to dinner. They should really change that rule. The drinks were good and plentiful. The beer was double x , no corona and if you wanted higher quality whiskey, vodka, etc head for the inside bars. Day activities were the normal pool and beach games. The nightly shows were nothing to write home about but do catch the magic show. I went to the night club with my wife for one night just to check it out and it was dead. My son had a blast in all the pools and the kids water section. The beach water was clean but rough. You definitely have to hold on to smaller kids and always keep an eye on them. Sara the lady that cleaned and restocked our room was the best. Overall it was a great vacation and we would definitely go back to an Iberostar resort.

Dear guest,

We would like to thank you for choosing to stay at Iberostar Paraiso Maya and for taking the time to share your review about your experience.

It is really an honor for us to know that you and your family enjoyed our resort again. We are proud that one of our repeat customers does this type of feedback, this way we know we are on the right path, and of course we will keep improving to provide the best of services.
We are sorry to hear that you could not visit our French Restaurant, it is important to mention that we have a place called kids’ corner where your children can be while adults are having dinner.

With respect to your comment about the dress code in the restaurants, we know that sometimes the weather in our country is a little hot and in order to make feel comfortable to our guests; we are having some changes in our resort, and that is because the dress code are being a little more flexible and currently our guests can use bermudas (long shorts or capri pants) and collar shirts are mandatory. Short pants are not allowed. The long pants are just mandatory in the French restaurants.

We are confident that you will be staying again at any of our hotels. One more time, we would like to thank you for your preference.

Warm regards,
Quality Manager

I went to a travel agent after searching the internet and not finding anything. Joanna suggested Iberostar Paraiso Maya when I told her I wanted somewhere that would not be boring for me, but where my husband, two daughters (ages 20 &18) and I could also relax. This was perfect!
The resort is large, so there's lots to do. There are actually five properties and we enjoyed visiting the others. The beach is beautiful.. soft, white sand and aqua blue water. There are plenty of lounge chairs. We could either relax with a pina colado (all alcohol is included) or do any of the fun things available right there...pottery paining, volleyball, zumba, yoga, going to a food festival (every other day), massages, bocci, etc.
We had a junior suite for all four of us. The room we had was right by the beach, just as we requested, however, in the future I would ask for a room with a nice view. Ours was inhibited by the high mangroves that grow everywhere. We had a balcony, sitting room, bedroom, and large bath with a jucuzzi. It, as well as the whole resort, was decorated in a Mayan theme which proved to be beautiful and interesting. Many of the lighting fixtures were enormous and we had drinks in the bar that was situated inside a faux pyramid. You have to see it! The food was beautifully presented, plentiful, interesting and delicious. (I missed my American coffee and tea, though. It was very close, but just a little "off." I learned to use two black tea bags which made it almost perfect.) There were so many restaurants to choose from, and we argued over which evening dining we liked best: Hibachi, French, or Mediteranean. We all liked the ambiance...such nice decorating...
The pool was huge and different at every turn, from bridges to waterfalls to a pool bar to lazy river with animals peeking here and there. Kudos to the architect who came up with it all -- we couldn't stop taking pictures to show family back at home.
I didn't even mention the spa, shopping plaza, and shows. It's all wonderful. Everything is taken care of, literally. There was even Mass on Sunday night (6:00 pm) right at the facility and the priest was so kind -- he spoke in English and Spanish, even though there weren't that many English speakers there. (He asked for a show of hands.)
The two best parts? The employees. I've never encountered a more cheeful, helpful, kind, competent group of people. They all deserve a bonus!! And the VALUE.

We stayed here with our 5yr old son, and it was a perfect choice for families.
Check in: went smoothly, no lines when we arrived (10 am). Unfortunately we were not able to get into our room until 3pm, but the staff kept all our luggage-we locked valuables up and we hit the pools.

Service issues: once in our room we noticed a sink not draining, toilet not flushing well, and TV remote not working. Called and concierge had two service people there in less than 5 minutes. We also had no trouble making restaurant reservations (even for the night of our arrival). If you need an extra bed make sure you let them know when to deliver. We waited for a while and when we called to inquire the concierge told us they usually deliver the beds at night and she was sorry for the misunderstanding-we had a bed with fresh linens less than 10 min after our call.

Housekeeping: Great service-if you want extra linens you will have to ask as they do not leave many extra in the rooms.

Food: we have stayed at many all inclusives and I would say the food here is average or slightly better-lots of variety. Try the coconut ice cream it's delicious. We ate at the Cajun, Japanese, and Brazilian-they were all pretty average for an all inclusive. My five year old had no problem finding food he liked.
Kids club: this was our first experience with a kids club and we were initially hesitant, but our 5 year old loved it and asked to go back. We checked in on him several times and the staff seemed attentive and children happy. The water park area is great for kids, but just be warned there is no drink service nearby, so if you are gonna be there awhile take a soft pack cooler fill it with beverages and ice and enjoy-that's what we did. There are loungers there that are always available.
Pools: our favorite was the wave pool. Yes if you want a lounge chair you need to get up early and reserve one with a towel/book etc. beware, however, some people do not mind infringing and we actually ended up with an extra beach towel as my husband was gathering up our things and took the towel of someone apparently 'using' the same chair. The lazy river was nice, but there are limited floats so go early or bring your own cheap blow up tube. The main pool is shared with the Lindo (I guess, we never could really tell where one ended and the other began). It's amazingly big and beautiful. Always activities going on.
Shows: we watched a couple, the entertainers are pretty good.
Overall a great all inclusive, bar staff attentive and service was good. Great choice for families with young children.

Stayed with our 2 kids and another family. Both families emailed before our arrival requesting rooms close to each other and our request was honored without a problem. The staff was helpful and spoke English as well as Spanish. The food was good, but don't expect anything super wonderful. We ate at all the sit down restaurants in the Maya and tried the buffets as well. Always had plenty to eat and was full, just not anything amazingly good. We brought a lot of singles and fives to leave as tips and were thankful we did. The pools were nice, clean, and warm. They were too deep for my 7 year olds to touch, except the wave pool. That was fine since they can swim and we also had round blow up tubes we brought that we floated on. The beach was beautiful and clean. The buffet for lunch right on the beach was nice and convenient. We had no problems finding chairs at either the pools or beach. Great trip and can't wait for our next trip!
