“Had a Great time!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2013

We just got back from a great stay at the Mayan Palace. Just read some of the negative reviews and I wanted to clarify a few things. We stayed for a week, and had a family of six. Some of these reviews are a bit ridiculous and with no common sense. This is a resort that offers a kitchen, so use it and don't complain about the food prices. If you want restaurant food everyday, then go to an all-inclusive. There are so many all-inclusives to choose from in Cancun. This resort offers a shuttle that runs every 2 hours to Playa Del Carmen that is $5 per person, so again, not sure where everyone is saying it is $25.00. The resort has a rental car center right on the resort, you can rent a car for a day. Playa del Carmen has a Mega store and a Walmart, stock up on food and use the kitchen in the room. We did eat out at the Havana Moon and the Fridas pool restaurant. Prices were reasonable, you are at a beach resort. You have to expect that it will be a bit more pricey. As far as the comment about the ketchup not on his hamburger....REALLY???!! The people were so friendly, the staff was wonderful and they very willing to accommodate. We were called a few times for a time share meeting, but again, you don't have to go!!!! Just say you are not interested.. Yes, the resort is large. We were in building 18, so walk it! If you are too lazy to walk, there is a golf cart that comes to your building every 10mins to take you to the pool. It is in a jungle, so bring bug spray for the evening. The beach is not for good for swimming, but if you walk 10 mins to your right there is a beautiful beach that you can swim at. The pool is massive and it is great for all ages, they have volleyball, basketball and other great pool sports, and they have PLENTY of chairs for everyone at the pool. Please use some commons sense, or stay at the a no brainer all inclusive, where you don't have to do anything, including using your mind!!! Researching is the key, then there isn't any surprises.

I stayed here in April with a group of 4 other girls in a two-bedroom unit. We really enjoyed our stay overall. Our suite was spacious, the pools were incredible and the staff was extremely friendly. Looking at past reviews, it seems like people were upset about a lot of small things that should have been fairly obvious if they went to the Mayan Palace website or did any research prior to their stay (location, size of the resort, payment system). So give Mayan Palace a chance!

We had an early morning flight and were happy to be able to check in early. Yes, the resort is very large and spread out, but the staff easily accommodated our request to be closer to the pools. Our two-bedroom suite was very large and included a small kitchen/dining area. The decor and furniture is a little stiff and outdated, but everything is accurately represented by the photos on their website. Plus, everything was kept extremely clean by the housekeeping staff who serviced the room daily. Having the small kitchen really helped us save some money. Our second day there we took the hotel shuttle to Mega in Playa del Carmen to stock up on food and drinks. Once we arrived back at Mayan Palace their staff handled moving all of the groceries to our room.

We mainly ate breakfast in our kitchen and went to a resort restaurant or ordered room service for lunch and dinner. The food was mainly just okay, but the portions were huge so it felt like you got a lot for your money. The highlights for me were the Italian restaurant and Fiesta Night (where you get live music, entertainment and a huge buffet of Mexican food options).

The best thing about Mayan Palace is the pool system - with most of the pools interconnecting. Our last night we actually walked past a pool we had never seen before since they have so many. Snag a palapa (covered hut) by reserving one the day before. It's nice to have the option of sitting under some shade if you want. Happy hour double sized drinks are great and pool activities (like water aerobics) were also fun. The staff is so friendly and accommodating that it really helps you relax and have a good time.

Final thought, as to the timeshare sales people ... we were never bothered once.

We stayed at the Mayan Palace Riviera week starting June 15, 2013. We were a family of 8 on a budget so keep that in mind. We got out of the resort on three days and a couple 4 hour trips into Playa and we averaged under 25 bucks per person per day at the resort. I have read a lot of reviews so I will hit get to the important things that we learned along the way and then the highlights that everyone states. We had a wonderful experience our entire trip to Mexico.

Leaving the resort… Outside companies are not allowed to pick you up inside the resort but they are allowed to bring you back in. If needed catch a golf cart to the main gate to be picked up by a tour. Check with the guys out front or the concierge on how to get to the front gate. The resort has a shuttle to and from Playa on a schedule for 50 pesos (a little over 4 bucks) each way. I recommend taking the shuttle to Playa and getting one of the hundered taxis to bring you back. I talked to different drivers as we walked and found one for 20 bucks, so when we were ready I told a driver I was offered 20 bucks and he said lets go. I recommend this because fifth street is long and the last thing I’d want to do is be back at the beginning where they drop you off to catch the shuttle home. Only thing is don’t expect the taxi driver to drive like the resort drivers. It can get exciting. Haha We found using Pesos was best and the vendors can come wayyyy down on their prices.

#1 recommendation from our family (mom, dad, grandma,4 teenagers and a 6 year old) is after looking high and low I found a personal tour guide that was awesome. We are glad we did because the week went by so quick and we got to see more. I just requested a tour to Tulum and surrounding area and we would go from there. All he was to provide was an air conditioned van and his knowledge. What an awesome day and the whole family is now his facebook friend. Of course I was spectacle but after a few emails I was totally at ease and our first glimpse of Cesar was as he sprinted toward us at the front gate because it’s a little hectic in the morning. We were easy to spot with a group of 8. Another impressive time was when we were snorkeling with sea turtles at Akumal and Cesar was right next to us pointing out turtles. The beach restaurant there was awesome and of course it was our pleasure that Cesar joined us for lunch. All of us learned so much about Mexico and the Riviera Maya from him. He must have answered a thousand questions from all of us. Big advantage for us is that we did this on our first full day there. Bonus… last stop of the day was a personal guide to Walmart to stock up for the week to save lots money on lunches, breakfasts, water and drinks. If you total up the prices for tours it was a no brainer to do what you want with no time constraints. A one way trip to Cancun is like 900 pesos each way. Its well worth a little extra money to just get a guide for the day. By the end of the day our shy 6 year old girl was holding Cesar’s hand and my wife just melted. You can email Cesar at transrenace@gmail.com or check out his facebook at Transportadora Renace Riviera Maya to see what he can offer you.

The Resort… Front Desk was awesome. Time share people were very polite and upon check-in they will provide you very valuable information about the resort so I recommend you be patient for about 10 minutes and you will know when they try to schedule the breakfast that its time to be firm but polite in saying no. We had no problem.
The rooms were very nice. No musty smell. Beds slept great for everyone and the air conditioning was could freeze you out if you want it to.
Biggest downside… We were lucky to not be any further out than building 8. I can’t vouch for being further away from the pool than that but it was about a 10 minute walk for us. No big deal unless you want to run to the room for something.
Pool area was unbelievably awesome. Sister resort Grand Mayan is very upscale. Pool is supposed to be off limits but we swam there at night several times. The Grand Mayan looked like a ghost town but it was beautiful. The beach is awesome too except for the swimming. We had 4 teenagers and a 6 year old and weren’t bothered because the pool was unbelievable.
On site store was large and had a decent groceries and awesome sandwiches for around 8 bucks and breakfast croissants every morning. All in all I didn’t find the prices outrageous.
Pool restaurant was fantastic for lunch or dinner. Once again I didn’t find the prices to be out of hand for a resort. The menu changes throughout the day. Burger and fries for lunch were tasty and the Mexican food was delicious.
Pool happy hour is 11am to 1pm where you get larger drinks but they always have 1 drink special I think until 5pm that always come with a larger glass. The Green Break had good tacos in the evening and also a happy hour but I’m not sure when it was. Drinks are about 8 buck but the are really good so we bought plenty even though we had bought drinks at Walmart.
We learned lots every day we were there. I hope this review helps! ENJOY

Room Tip: The higher the building number the further you are from the pool. We were lucky but this could be a...

Myan Palace is absolutely beautiful. The pool area is spectacular and very clean. The beach is pretty and had plenty of chairs. Everyone is telling the truth about the coral. Its awful :/ the resort did say how ever they are going to be sand blasting the dead coral out and this time next year it will be a whole different beach. Food at the restraints wasn't anything out of the ordinary. Just a little pricey but not much more then you'd pay in the states. There is a grocery store called Mega in Playa Del Carmen also a walmart. Buy you alcohol and snacks there it will safe you plenty. Also happy hour the far staff never knows.... Soooooo ask for the "special" typically gets you the bigger drink. Please DO NOT waste your time at the time share. The free breakfast they give you and 10% off your "bill" is def a joke. You will be so angry out the end of your presentation. You sit for almost 6 hours and honestly cone out with no "gifts" so don't ware a whole day doing it. The staff outside the lobby area are wonderful. So friendly and polite and helpful. I want to go back to Mexico but I def wouldn't go back to the palate again, its more of a joke/scam.

We visited the resort June 7-14th and can say we really did enjoy our stay. The grounds were well kept and beautiful..quite a change in scenery from the highway the resort is located off of. It is in the middle of a highway..in the middle of no where. You will need to rent a car, take a shuttle or a taxi to get to Playa del carmen or Cancun. The taxi to Cancun was around $45..we only went once for this price :(. The shuttle to Playa del Carmen was $5 a person each way..way more reasonable. As far as the resort goes..it is quite large and if you dont want to walk long distances get a room in buildings 1-6. The pool was the most impressive pool ever. It was HUGE..from one side you cannot even see the other. The room was nice..we stayed in Mayan Palace and had a 2 bedroom 2 bath just for my boyfriend and I. The bed was very comfortable to me though some say it was too hard. The pillows were comfortable to me..though some say they are too small. People will find negative in anything. Anyways, the staff were very polite and accomodating..willing to give tips and directions. We enjoyed the restaurants..all were atleast $25 a plate for an entree per person but the food was close to 5 star. THis wouldnt be a place for a family of 4 or more if you arent rolling in money. It can get really expensive considering other restaurants and food options are not within walking distance. Everything was clean, however, it is basically in the jungle. You will see insects, iguanas, and birds. However, this made it more interesting. The beach is basically not swimmable , there are rocks along the shoreline but the water is pretty and great for a walk along the shore with some swim shoes. Check out activities like snorkeling. We did go to the time share presentation and I didnt expect to get the gifts they offered prior to the presentation. I thought they gip us.For attending the presentation we got all of this!..a tour of the more upscale parts of the resort, free breakfast buffet, 10% of our snorkeling and Mayan ruin tour and other resort purchases, $300 towards our total deposit. So for 2 hours of eating/talking/somewhat high pressure if you cant handle saying NO NO and NO..we got a great deal. Just know what to expect..the beach isnt swimmable, the resort is in the middle of nowhere, transportion isnt cheap, the restaurants on the resort will run you about $25 a plate, oh , the drinks are about $10 a piece, and it is worth going to the timeshare presentation if you have a couple of hours to waste.(to me it was fun to get smart with the pushy sales reps..more of a game..I knew i wasnt buying an $8000 time share:) ENJOY!!

Room Tip: choose a room in building 6 and up

We were there for two weeks the middle of June and had a great time and am not sure where some of the negative reviewers are coming from. Our experience with the entire staff was positive, our only negative experience had to do with communications about their monthly specials but those misunderstandings were resolved to our satisfaction. Our treatment at Brio the spa was amazing, the facility itself is lovely and the attendant placed a cool washcloth on our faces and was very attentive. I recommend people arrive early and take advantage of the free hydrotherapy facilities.
The food was amazing at times. Two of my meals at Tramonto were among my favorites, great pasta, good service and a beautiful room.
We enjoyed the wine bar's happy hour nearly every night and also enjoyed the entertainers Malonie and Gianni they were delightful as was our attentive waiter Jose.
Gong was really nice, sushi, Vietnamese spring rolls so good but the best was the crispy grouper, I just made myself salivate thinking about it.
Our house keeper Monica was like our mom. She placed fresh flowers on our bed and just beamed every time we attempted conversation. Ok, the furniture was a bit raggedy in the living area but comfortable so can't really complain.
Room service pizza was fast and hot and a nice break if you just want to stay in at night.
One of the best things we did was take a bottle of wine out to the beach outside Havana Moon, we enjoyed some live music and all the moonlight for free! We thought the prices were very reasonable at all the venues and we split nearly every entree with room to spare. It does pay to take advantage of the happy hours at the pool and Wine Bar, can't believe we were nearly alone at the Wine Bar at night.
Overall the service from everyone was excellent, oh and that includes the golf course and Green Break, the breakfast there was really nice. Golf was fun but hot, start early the course was in great shape.

Room Tip: Low numbered buildings the best, closer to the pool and beach and restaurants.

we stayed two weeks at this place. Has beautiful beach and huge swimming pool. Several great restaurants with good food. The rooms were adequate although the sofa not very comfortable for a resort of this caliber. Other than that it was ok . Very nice entertainment. When you check in don't get duped into any information session. By the time you leave that you'll wish you never came to the resort at all. They are extremely aggressive. Also the resort is so large that the use of the transportation system is almost mandatory. they use extended golf carts . Other than that we had a great time there.
