“Pretty Amazing Place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2012

This is a pretty amazing resort and the rooms were gorgeous. My Mom and I take a trip together every year and this year she traded one of her timeshares for the Grand Luxxe. We had a two-bedroom on the top floor of Tower 2. The square footage was huge—probably close to 3,000 square feet. The rooms were beautiful, looked brand new, and I can’t say enough nice things about housekeeping, which came twice a day. There was a concierge on our floor, which was a nice added touch as well. The pool at the Grand Luxxe was great and the service at that pool was also superior.

The food on the property is just okay, except for The Burger Custom Made, Tramonto (Italian), and Gong (Asian). The food at all three of those restaurants was out of this world and definitely worth taking the time to go to at least once (if not more!) during your stay.

We made the mistake of not following the other reviews and we attended the timeshare presentation at the Grand Mayan. Horrible—couldn’t get out of there!! Plus, they were trying to force us into buying at the Mayan Palace, whose rooms looked like Motel 6 rooms compared to the Grand Luxxe. Stay away from the presentation and you’ll be fine. My Mom wanted the discount off of our room charges, which is why we attended.

My only complaint about the resort itself is the beach. Like everyone has said—it’s rocky and non-swimmable. It’s a shame that the beach isn’t better because the Grand Luxxe would truly be the perfect resort. The pools were great, but nothing beats a fabulous beach.

Room Tip: If you don't want to look directly out into the jungle, ask for a room on the top floor.

All I can say is OUTSTANDING. Exceeded all expectations

Had 1bed with an additional studio lock off.
From the moment I arrived from the transfer to the checkin I felt like a truly valued guest
Attentive service and as other have said just the sheer attention to detail

We spent a week at the Luxxe and then move onto the Westin in Cancun. Although more lively in Cancun. Not a scratch on the Luxxe
Room amenities, private pool (longest I have ever seen) just amazing trip

Great property--totally exceeded our expectations. We stayed here on a last minute timeshare exchange through Interval International. A bit of a problem at check-in but feel that the miscomunication was the fault of Interval. In the end, we were given a lovely room. Staff goes above and beyond to be helpful. Onsite restaurants are very nice, modestly priced, and offer good dining choices. The resort is carved out of a jungle with limited access service roads. Shuttles are always available when you need them. The weather could have been a bit better.
As others have said, avoid the timeshare sales sharks and you will have a truly great vacation.
Housekeeping staff -- helpful and friendly; they will go out of their way to make sure that you are comfortable.

Room Tip: Rooms with plunge pools are the best. I don't think the third floor is a huge factor. not much t...

If it weren't for the horrible timeshare presentation, we would have given this resort an excellent rating.

PROS:

1. The service here is pretty top-notch. It's pretty clear that this resort tries hard to make sure their guests have a good experience.

2. We ate at 4 different restaurants and they were all very good. The Burger Custom-made was particularly a nice surprise. These weren't your average burgers, these were like artisan burgers and worth their hefty price tag. I had the 3 mini burgers - the shrimp one was my fave followed by the kobe with foe gras. My husband had the Le Quack, a duck and pork burger with cinnamon apples and gorgonzola cheese and the truffle fries which were both delicious! Our server (I think his name was Enrique) was also very good and quite funny.

3. The resort and the rooms are beautiful and there's a string of never-ending pools all over the place. We stayed in a studio but it's larger than some one bedrooms we've stayed in.

4. Free airport shuttle!

5. Free coffee and very good cookies in the morning. One morning they had french macaroons!

6. If you're visiting the concierge, there's also complimentary beverages - water, soda, coffee.

CONS

1. The beach is not really swimmable because the water is rough. We were told that they are in the process of building a natural reef to make the water calmer but that will obviously take some time. Until then, there are plenty of pools.

2. If you want to go to downtown Playa Del Carmen, it's about 20 minutes away and will cost about $20 US one way if you take a taxi. The good thing is that they have a shuttle service for about $5 US one way but the hours may not meet your needs. I think the last one that goes out is at 6pm and the last return is at 7pm. We usually took the shuttle out and came back via taxi.

3. This is a very large resort so you need to take shuttles to get around but they come pretty regularly and will come right away if you call for one.

MAJOR CON:

Whatever you do, do not attend the Vida Vacations timeshare presentation for discounts because it's just not worth it! They say it will only take 90 minutes but it took us over 5 hours! They were not even finished but when they insisted that we needed to sign some sort of form accepting an acknowledgment of projected maintenance fees for our existing timeshare, we walked out.

They claim to want to educate you about the existing timeshare scams and give you an opportunity to get out of your existing obligation by buying your timeshare from you in exchange for your upgrade to their program. We later read a bunch of complaints about them not delivering on what was promised, not allowing people to cancel without losing their hefty deposits, and not being able to buy their existing timeshares.

They also said that we were only invited to the resort as a special promotion to market their program and that we needed to sign these papers before we could leave, starting with the acknowledgment of projected assessment fees. They said that we probably received an email but did not read it but I double checked and this was not true. We did not accept any special promotion to stay at the resort and were not required to attend the presentation but, like everyone else sitting in there, were lured in by the deep discounts we were offered.

Anyway, the whole experience left a very bad taste in our mouths and really changed our mood for the rest of our stay. It's not worth the time or the stress so don't do it!

Room Tip: Try to get at least a second floor room to have a view of something. On the first floor, all you see...

We returned from the Grand Luxxe on August 25. While the size and layout of this property presents some challenges, our overall experience was more than favorable. Vacationing in the Riviera Maya during a relatively slow season probably gave us access to more personalized attention by hotel staff, but it was easy to recognize that each employee's goal is to make sure your stay is a great one.

The entire Mayan Palace/Grand Mayan/Grand Luxxe complex is carved out of the jungle. The buildings barely rise above the tree line, so it takes a while to learn the lay of the land. We were almost entirely dependent on the shuttle service. Fortunately, they seemed to always show up when you needed them. If one had to be called, they were typically there within two minutes. Two or three times during the week we had to wait around five minutes.

The timeshare sharks took "no, thank you" for an answer after we checked in. They only called the room once during the stay to try to get us to their "informational" breakfast.

Food and Drink- Prices were consistent with other resorts that we've visited. Burger Custom Made at the Grand Luxxe pool was very good. We also enjoyed Havana Moon. One night, we ordered tasty sandwiches at the deli that were moderately priced. The convenience store had a decent selection with high prices. We rented a a car for a few days, so I ran into Playa and bought breakfast, lunch and beverages at the Mega. This store is super clean, with a great selection and low prices. They also have delicious rotisserie chickens and baked goods and homemade ceviche.
Bar drinks and service were very good. The extra large drinks served during happy hour were not very strong, so I opted for the 2 for 1 cervezas.

Beach and pool. As stated by many reviewers, the beach has a lot of coral and rocks that make for difficult entry and exit, even with water shoes. We knew that going in, so made it a point to visit excellent sandy beaches in Puerto Morelos and Akumal while we had the rental car. Grand Luxxe guests do enjoy a private section of the beach, with very comfy lounges and shaded areas. Take good care of your pool concierge, and you will have a great spot waiting for you at the beach or poolside each day.

Accomodations- We had a 2 bedroom/2.5 bath suite. There was plenty of room for four of us. The bathrooms were huge and the shower pressure and hot water were always great. The kitchen had everything but an oven and dishwasher. A dishwasher would have been nice. Beds were comfy and if you go in the living room armoire, there are a variety or different pillows to choose from. The main living room area was a great place to unwind. The deck and private pool are a nice touch. Housekeepers came twice a day. Never a shortage of towels.

Concierge service was also excellent. It was easy to make restaurant reservations, change currency or arrange for a taxi. They also have free capucino all day long.

We went to the resort on a timeshare exchange, and I think we got a great deal. I'd probably return to Grand Luxxe, but would probably opt for a property with a better beach, if one was available.

My family and I stayed at this resort from 7/28 thru 8/4/12 and I must say the resort was great the staff was attentive and beautiful atmosphere but.. as members of Interval International we were told transportation would be provided as a courtesy, but due to flight delays (thanks AA :-( ...) we arrived 2hrs late and if you get to Cancun Int. Airport after 11:00 pm the courtesy van is nowhere to be found. We were told the van was not allowed on the premises after 11pm. At this point you are left to the mercy of the scavengers they call cab drivers!!! And they will charge you whatever they feel like. But as I said at the beginning the staff arranged a return ride back to the airport in an air-conditioned private van just for me and my family. They also allowed us to remain in the room as our flight wasn't taking off until 4pm and Julio the Concierge gave us a 15% off The Burger Custom Made.

All in all the trip was great thanks to Julio Cortez and his Staff.

Just returned after one week at the Grand Luxxe. First and foremost, credit is due to the staff at all properties: Grand Luxxe, Grand Mayan, and Mayan Palace. We found all the staff knowledgeable and willing to help. The Grand Luxxe concierge and valet staff consistently identified us by our name and were generally very helpful. The shuttle between the properties was also very consistent and we only waited for more than five minutes once. The walking distance to the main pool and restaurants is a bit exaggerated from prior reviews considering Grand Luxxe is actually closer to the pool/restaurants in comparison to the majority of rooms at GM and MP. We were also relatively pleased with the quality and price of the food options as the value was pretty consistent at all the restaurants we tried on property.

The one real head-scratcher for us was the amount of noise that came from the room next door, hallway, and the room above us. With the amount of money and attention to detail placed on the rooms, it is beyond me how the acoustics of the rooms were not addressed and ranks near the bottom of all my hotel experiences. Even with ear plugs, I woke up twice to a full sit up position in the middle of the night due to excessive noise stemming from the hallway. We overhead conversations, snoring, and even passionate noises from the room next door - keeping in mind we had a 2BR setup without the lockoff issue. There is clearly an issue with connected duct work that allows the sound to permeate between rooms and requires further investigation by the hotel staff. The closest analogy I could think of as I laid awake in the middle of night was imagine buying a Mercedes S600 and having to deal with excessive engine noise.

As a hotel guest, disruption to sleep is one element but on the flip slide feeling a lack of privacy knowing that the neighbors could hear the same noises on our end makes you quite self conscious of your actions and detracts significantly from the overall experience. If the acoustics issues were resolved, I would gladly recommend this property to anyone with a 5 star rating. Until then, I would be cognizant of this near fatal flaw in the property as you make your travel decisions.

Room Tip: Be aware of the acoustic issues!
