My family and I were in the Dominican Republic from 4/4/07 to 4/11/07 on a vacation which we booked through Apple Vacations.
We stayed at the resort Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus in La Romana, Dominican Republic.
The phone located in the room had a sign next to it with the phone number to call which offered international phone services.
The sign did not reveal the phone company name or the rates.
To inquire the rates, we asked the receptionist at the main desk of the resort. He specifically told us that it is $1 per minute.
We used the number several times, particularly the credit card option, to reach the US.
During the automated part of the call we were only prompted for the language selection and which country we're trying to reach.
The rates were not mentioned at any point during the phone call.
When we returned home we discovered that we were charged over $600 for a handful of calls done during our stay.
We have initiated the dispute through our credit card company and also tried to talk to the phone company which provided this service.
I was able to find the details of the phone company from my credit card statement.
The company name was stated as International Satellite Communication which is also known as BBG Communications Inc.
BBG's customer support representative has refused to connect me with the supervisor or to take a complaint.
He also refused to give me the company web or mail address. The only information he provided was the details of the charge.
BBG's rate is $5.99 per minute with a 5 minute minimum and an additional $15 connection fee per call (charged even if the connection has failed).
I have sent a complaint to Apple Vacations, Iberostar, and Better Business Bureau.
The resort itself is great but they should have protected their customers from such ridiculous phone charges. Very disappointed in Apple Vacations and Iberostar!
