Where to begin! I have traveled extensively and booked more than my share of trips. Up until now I had never made a bad decision. Having visited the Dominican Republic as part of a cruise it became someplace that I wanted to vacation. I checked out several resorts but wanted to stay someplace a little out of the way so decided on the Viva Beach even after reading the mixed reviews. What a mistake!!! It was my honeymoon and it became a true funnymoon. The rooms are not 4 star. The review about mold and foul odors are true. We checked out several rooms as well as several bungalows and none were any better than the rest. Our sink and tub did not drain. The toilet clogged constantly. The bed was lumpy. The service is definitely not 4 star! Check in took over an hour. The reviews about rude people jumping in front of you and no one caring are all true. The staff at the front desk are plain and simply overwhelmed with the task they are presented with. The rest of the staff did not speak much if any English. We had to complain about our tub not being cleaned and such several times before finally getting the room cleaned. This is the only hotel, resort, cruise, or bed and breakfast I have ever stayed at that did not provide washclothes!!! The drinks were a mess. Nothing tasted like anything I have ever drank before. The shows were something one can see on any street corner in the Bronx. The beach was dirty and swimming areas are very limited due to the rocky nature of this beachfront. We are from the USA and I am not exaggerating when I say there were only 3 other couples that we met the entire week which spoke English. The area around the resort has nothing worth seeing. The food was an absolute mess. My wife and I came to call it the "mystery meat" meals as most of it tasted like nothing we had ever tasted before. The eating areas all served the same tired food night after endless night. It got real old real fast. To say this resort caters to our European counterparts would be nothing short of the biggest understatement I have ever made. What I cannot understand is why anyone would travel all the way from a beautiful country like Italy too stay at a dump like this. Overall I would rate this as the worst of the 30 some vacations I have taken. And no apologies for the harsh review. This place earned it!!!!

Great place to relax, but the entertainment was the worst

The gounds are really beautiful and the resort has a wonderful beach area. However, the nightlife and entertainment was the WORST. If you are planning on just sleeping at night, and not hanging out at the the resort you will be fine. (You will sleep like a baby) I'm 45, and I still like to hang out until 2 am and party while on vacation not in bed by 11 pm. You will sleep all day on the beach, relax, read. The rooms could really use some new updated decor, and a nice flat screen tv with cable channels.

I read the same reviews before May, and had some concerns about the resort.
The resort is located a little far from the main ariport SDQ, about 2 hours, but we got in the resort in 1:30 minutes(thanks to the driver). Check In is very strict. We had to wait for an hours before being allowed to check in. Family group of 14 people, you think they would give a better service.
Beach and Palace is located next to each other, so you will have plenty of company. We did not find any problems to settle down in the beach or in the pool area. A lot restaurants to choose from, plenty of food for all. Book ahead, you can cancell if you don't like it. My kids love the pool, we did not find the endless pool until the 3rd day. So, they could have given some tour on the arrival.
We stayed at a larger room with a kitchen. No problems, there. You could still here the music, but too tired to notice.
Beach was just what the kids wanted, shallow in one section with a lot of fishes. Watch out for the corals.
Keep your beach towels clean, they run out by mid day and no exchange until 5PM
Some of the staff were friendly, however we found most of male staff from front desk very unplesant to deal with. Everything in resort was great, but because i had to deal with the staff to Check in and Check out....can't wait for self automated check in/out services.

This is hopefully going down as the most unpleasant resort in my travel history.
Food - Horrible, Drinks - Worse, Service - What Service?
Don't get taken in by the name Wyndam. In this instance it does not mean great quality, it doesn't even mean good quality.
While the resort itself is pretty. The service is really like no can be bothered. The food is crap and the drinks are unrecognizable as to what they are suppose to be. Entertainment is pathetic. Its an overpriced waste of vacation time is what it is. Highly disappointed from the first night. Actually they are so bad with service I was not registered in there system even though I went through all the standard reception practices. I came to find this out while eating at one of the restaurants and then having to take care of the tab separate and apart since reception could not confirm that even though I was staying there for 2 days I was actually there? Give me a break. Then on the following day when I think this snaffu has been corrected. I make a reservation for yet another restaurant to discover that I'm still not appearing on the system, which in turn affected my scheduled pick-up back to the airport. Will never in my life stay at a Wyndam again even if they are offering free nights stay.

We were thrilled from beginning to end of this vacation. We speak English - our teenage son understands a lot of Spanish, and the language barrier was nothing. Arrived one day late due to airline delays & snow and they DIDN't give away our room. They DIDN't give us grief, ignore us, send us elsewhere, act more rude than we expected given the clientele they cater to. We are patient people and understand that "rude" to us is pretty standard behavior in other parts of the world. Try to barter at a JC Penney sometime and see how that goes over. We were prepared to relax, eat too much, drink what we wanted and sleep a lot. Got ALL of that.

Stayed in a bungalow a good walk from food - which helped with the weight gain. Bungalow is small for some but we camp a lot in a tent so for us it was spacious and perfect. Shower worked, toilet worked, A/C worked, safe worked, fluffy towels, clean, no mold, great front porch in the shade for reading while you wait. The grounds were beautiful & lush and they must have 200 gardners working constantly trimming and watering. Felt VERY safe from the airport all the way through the resort. Never felt like someone was going to snag our camera or stuff on the beach. And because we spoke English we didn't have to do a lot of participating if we didn't want to. If you want special treatment you just have to spend a little in tip money and you'll have some new friends following you everywhere.

One thing nobody ever mentions is the health club. What a fantastic facility!!!! Lots of stairsteppers, bikes, treadmills, weight machines & free weights, floor mats, and a trainer. Unbelievable.

Buffets - had everything we were looking for and the "pasta guy" was always available to make you something fresh to your specs. The Dominican coffee at breakfast will knock you on your can, so if you can't get through the crowd at the bar for an espresso just skip it and head to breakfast.

Beach---the water! sand! fish right in the coral so you can stand in shin-deep water and look at them. just watch for sea urchins tucked in the rocks. The animation team and the bulk of the "busy" people and the loud music are in the center of the resort. We found we preferred heading to the newer quiet end by the volley ball net and trapeze set-up where there was lots of space, little music, and the bar over there has their beer tap facing out so you can self-serve. Found that as our week gradually progressed the English speaking clientele gravitated more to that area too.

This resort connects to the sister resort, Dominicus Palace so seamlessly you have to check a map to realize you're not at your own original resort. It's just one big place, just the Palace is a lot quieter activity-wise. You don't feel like an intruder as you wanter between the two resorts.

The word that keeps coming to mind overall is RELAXING. The visitors of all nationalities were generally laid back and could care less that we were there. They sunned themselves, did their thing, smoked a lot (that took some getting used to) and provided some interesting people watching.
