“WTC Greece”

Sithonia Hotel at Porto Carras Grand Resort

May 30, 2008

Very nice area. Beautiful nature. The hotel reminded me of the WTC Moscow - typical busines center style architecture. Though the location is perfect. Neos Marmaras is 15 minutes of walking along the beach. Personal is nice and friendly. The cleaning of the rooms could be better (3 out of 5). Food is nice but not various. Beach is nice. Beach towels can be ordered at the reception (no extra costs) and will be delivered to your room.

overall the hotel is very impressive.it is renovated in most parts but there is no attention to detail that makes a hotel special.the front door concierge were polite and although plenty no one cared to park my car.check-in was quick and efficient.the reception and lobby area is very nice decorated but noisy as well.the elevators are ery slow and for such big hotel there are not enough(only three).usually you had to wait around 5 min. on rush hours.the corridors outside the rooms were comletelly renovated but with no charm at all-not a single painting or something else that would be nice on the walls.the junior suite we had was partly renovated as all the rooms i guess.most of the furnitures were brand new, the capboards and toilet door not etc.the tiles on the balcony were reminding you of a 1 star motel most of them had cracks.there was a mini bar well stoked, an aircondition that worked whenever it liked(!), an old t.v. set.it was good in size but nothing special for a junior suite-definatelly not what you expect from a 5 star hotel(official rating).the bathroom was partly renovated of good size with telephone, hairdryer and nice cosmetics.towels were brand new.the views from the room were superb.in general soundproof was good.
we had ordered room service for dinner which was fast and delicious on a trolley table.i strongly suggest to do that.
breakfast ws in a huge restaurant, not bad but very noisy.service again was very good.the gardens weren't in their best.the self service restaurant by the beach was worse than a junk food restaurant . the pools were beautiful but not enough sunbeds.beach was lovely but not very well organized-sunloungers everywhere left here and there.the was no beach service.you could not order a sandwich from beach bar but only drinks so in this way we starved around 16:00 o'clock in the afternoon.in the area i believe it is the best hotel cause there aren't others in 5 star category. there is a spa center which we did not use cause we were with our 4 months old baby, a beauty prlour and a gourmet restaurant which looked very elegant.definatelly has some great things to do like horse back riding, golf, tennis, water sports and many restaurants and bars as a resort but they need to take care the small details if they want to be 5 star.

“Poor service at Sithonia hotel”

Sithonia Hotel at Porto Carras Grand Resort

Aug 20, 2007

We just had an 11 day vacation at the Sithonia hotel at the Porto Carras resort. We have family of four: two adults, and two kids (14 & 5). I want to share my experience with the future travelers to help them to make the right choice. The hotel is old. They claim that a renovation was done, and sold the vacation package as a 5* hotel. I would rate the hotel as 3.5* at maximum. ( I travel a lot, and know how 4 & 5* hotels should look like, and the level of service that one can expect.) They did renovation to bathrooms and rooms, but the rest of the hotel (hallways, elevators, etc.) remain in old condition. However, their renovation is not good. In our first day in the hotel, the towel rod (the one you want to hang towels on) fell down on my child's head while she was taking shower. It took me me 4 trips (3 days ) to receiption before they changed it. They have minibar in rooms. In our room it wasn't working. The safe in our room wasn't working either. I did ask few times to fix the minibar, but no one ever came. You know, in the hot days you prefer to drink something cold. Their elevators don't have the photoelement in it , and can close right on people. To prevent it happening, you have to go inside, and push the button "Open doors" . However, it is not always possible. If many people go out of the elevator, then you just don't have time to get in quickly enough. In the end of our vacation my 14 year old was jammed by elevator's doors. Unfortunately, she was holding cup of hot coffee. The coffee was spilled on her white jaket. She was burned (nothing serious) but mostly scared. She grown up in Canada, and is not acustomed to such elevators. The food in the hotel is tasty, but very monotonous. They change it every day a little, but not enough. If you like to drink coctails during your vacation, you can forget about it in this hotel. They just don't have it. Not even Pina Coladas.
What is good about this hotel is their beach. The beach is very good, and the sea is beautiful and very very clean. We did enjoy swimming, and our kids just loved it. However, if you like snorkling, it is not the best place to do it - there are no reefs.
In general, we had a good vacation. We tried to ignore their service(which was bad, especially at the "3" restaurants, but I only found 2.) and concentrated on the sea. in a few days we were tired of their food, and started to escape in neighbourhood village. There are plenty of good restaurants and gift shops.
As a conclusion, I can say that if you don't care about service too much, you can go to that hotel and enjoy the sea. I will not come again there.

We were really disapointed with this hotel. It had its heyday in the 90's and the grim decor really needs a makeover. Due to its strange construction, noise travelled upwards, making most of the rooms incredibly noisy. This made sleeping impossible until the noise had died down in the early hours of the morning. We resorted to piling up spare bedding at the door to insulate against the noise! None of corridors or rooms had carpets, which added to the problem. We asked to move to a quieter room, but were told to try later as they were full.
Another fault was there was nowhere to sit outside in the evenings. The only outside area belonged to the casino and this involved joining (Paying) for the privilige. We went to the local village most evenings or one of the sister hotels. The pool area was also a disaster, neglected and dated, only really used by the diving club.
The hotels only saving graces were the beach, with its huge sun shades and breakfast which was really good. And of course the setting on beautiful sithonia peninsula. This hotel needs renovation to bring it up to 4* quality at the present its 3* at the most.

The resort is very impressive at first, with the guarded gate and the approach road through the estate. But, once you get to the hotel, you start running into troubles: the bell-boys are nowhere to be found, the approach to the hotel entrance is blocked with parked cars/busses, the parking lots are hard to figure out...

The entire property looks worn-down, like it was not upgraded since the time it was built in the 1980s, especially the rooms. I would rank it 3-stars max.

The service continues to be lousy, they run out of towels, the waiters in the restaurant are unkind, as well as the receptionists...

My friend and I stayed 9 days, HB. The food was good, the beach is ok, not much to do there though. The casino is ok. The garden is nice for walks and to sit in the open . The other hotel in the resort, Meliton, seems to be more classy and better maintained/managed.

The nearby town of Nea Marmaris is small, one long street with shops, but very poor architecture. The rest of Sithonia is nice: mountinous terrain, Mediteranean trees, many wild camping sites and lagoons with crystal water.

We took several tours from the local agency in the lobby, the full-day boat trips to Atos and to Kassandra were nice.

All in all, it might have been a great hotel 20 years ago, it just isn't anymore. And the poor service makes it even worse. I would not recommend it.
